<p>On <strong>March 5 at 11 a.m. PST</strong>, the team will go live to fully reveal the upcoming <strong>Warlock class</strong> and share details about the next season. So, if you have been waiting to see how this class really plays, make sure to watch this stream.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Warlock Reveal for Diablo 4</h2>



<p>The spotlight will be on <a href="https://www.icy-veins.com/d4/news/warlock-confirmed-for-every-diablo-game-in-massive-anniversary-reveal/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">the Warlock</a>, described as a demonologist born of Vizjerei blood. Blizzard stated that players will get a full look at:</p>

<p>After weeks of speculation on how the class will play, this should finally answer how the Warlock fits into Diablo 4&#8217;s current class lineup. Especially when compared to the <a href="https://www.icy-veins.com/d4/necromancer/builds/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Necromancer</a>, which is the main summoner class of Diablo 4 so far.</p>

<p>Side quests in <a href="https://www.icy-veins.com/d4/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Diablo 4</a> are not exactly broken, but at this point, they are just ignored by most players.</p>



<p>When you first level a character, they can feel like nice bits of world-building. Some of them even offer surprisingly important lore information. But once players reach endgame, especially in higher Torment tiers, side quests quickly become something to skip rather than seek out. They are nice when you first start the game, but after a few seasons, you are doing everything you can to evade anything related to side quests.</p>



<p>The issue is not the writing or the content of the side quests, but it is the rewards.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">&#8220;Why Am I Even Doing This?&#8221;</h2>



<p>Over time, a lot of <a href="https://www.reddit.com/r/diablo4/comments/1rhoa11/blizzard_please_give_us_some_decent_rewards/?utm_source=share&amp;utm_medium=web3x&amp;utm_name=web3xcss&amp;utm_term=1&amp;utm_content=share_button" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">discussions on social media</a> are going over the same problem. In Diablo 4, side quests do not feel worth the time investment.</p>



<p>Experience gains are minimal compared to other activities. Gold rewards are negligible at higher levels. And even if some quests can now drop Ancestral items, it is really not enough to justify going out of your way.</p>



<p>For many players, picking up a side quest by accident, especially from a dropped item, feels more like clutter than opportunity.</p>



<p>So instead of asking for redesigned quests or entirely new content, players are proposing something much simpler! <strong>Blizzard needs to give side quests long-term valu</strong>e.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">A Milestone System Instead of Individual Rewards</h2>



<p>In a video, <a href="https://youtu.be/lMxdCdtnzr4?si=aV9pIk8om4KsZ_a_" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">MRGRUGER and his community</a> suggested something really interesting. They proposed a tiered milestone reward system linked to overall side quest completion in Diablo 4.</p>



<p>The idea is straightforward:</p>



<ul>
<li>Add a visible progress tracker for total side quest completion</li>



<li>Reward players at major milestones rather than per quest</li>



<li>Focus on cosmetics and long-term incentives instead of small gold or XP rewards</li>
</ul>



<p>For example:</p>



<ul>
<li>100 completed quests could grant a cosmetic or mount item</li>



<li>25% or 50% total completion might unlock larger rewards</li>



<li>Full completion could award a premium-tier cosmetic set, potentially even something comparable to shop-exclusive items</li>
</ul>



<p>This solution would not even require redesigning the quests themselves. The content stays the same, but the value perception changes. If completing a certain number of side quests per season could reward you with an exclusive mount or shop cosmetic, something that would maybe change each season as well, players would have an actual reason to seek out side quests. </p>



<p>It would also add more value to the open-world. Players would have to go around the map to complete side quests. This would be a nice change of pace between two boss fights or <a href="https://www.icy-veins.com/d4/news/diablo-4-endgame-is-getting-a-massive-rework/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">War Plans runs</a>.</p>



<p>The appeal of a milestone system is that it creates a background goal. Players who enjoy side content would feel rewarded. Completionists would finally have something meaningful to hunt. And endgame-focused players might have a reason to engage with existing content rather than ignoring it entirely.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Not Just Rewards</h2>



<p>Some players also added that tracking is just as important as better loot. Currently, there is no clean global overview showing how close a character is to finishing all side quests. For completionists, that lack of visibility can be more frustrating than the rewards themselves.</p>



<p>Others suggest integrating side quests into the <a href="https://www.icy-veins.com/d4/guides/tree-of-whispers-guide/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Whisper system</a> more consistently, to make sure they always contribute toward Grim Favors rather than feeling like isolated side activities.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">A Low-Cost Fix to an Old Problem?</h2>



<p>Side quests in Diablo 4 are not universally disliked. Many are well-written and add lore to Sanctuary&#8217;s world. The problem is that, in a game built around efficiency and optimization, they struggle to compete with <a href="https://www.icy-veins.com/d4/guides/nightmare-dungeon-guide/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Nightmare Dungeons</a>, <a href="https://www.icy-veins.com/d4/guides/helltide-guide/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Helltides</a>, and <a href="https://www.icy-veins.com/d4/news/diablo-4-reveals-season-12-with-killstreaks-bloodied-items/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">seasonal systems</a>.</p>



<p>A milestone reward structure would not reinvent the whole thing. But it might finally give players a reason to stop skipping content that is already there.</p>



<p>And judging by the current discussion, that is all many players are really asking for.</p>

Diablo 4 Players Propose Milestone Rewards to Fix Side Quest Problem


<p>If you missed it, there is a short moment in the <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RNUsgqRKQoI" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Diablo 30th Anniversary Spotlight video</a> showing a glimpse of the town hub we will call home in Skovos, the new zone coming with Lord of Hatred.</p>



<p>The layout of <strong>Temis, the upcoming major city and main hub of Skovos</strong>, was recently <a href="https://www.reddit.com/r/diablo4/comments/1rgnnx6/new_skovos_major_city_temis_layout_looking_pretty/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener nofollow">shared on Reddit</a>, and one detail immediately stood out: everything important appears to be close together.</p>



<p>All four artisans. The Purveyor. The Cube. The Pit or Tower. Even Echoing Hatred.</p>



<p>And for endgame players, that is especially important.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Temis Looks Built For Minimal Friction</h2>



<p>Since the screenshot is from the official Spotlight, we can assume that it is accurate. Looking at it, the layout clearly conveys that Temis is designed as a true endgame hub.</p>



<p>Throughout the discussion on Reddit, players quickly noticed that the waypoint sits near nearly every major vendor. The Tree of Whispers crow also appears close by, which is a small but welcome detail. Anyone who has spent hours running back and forth in Cerrigar, or even just up the street in Kyovashad, knows how much that saves over time.</p>



<p>The original poster compared it with the current hub in Scosglen, writing that &#8220;<em>this might be the new Cerrigar.</em>&#8220;</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Why Town Layout Became a Big Deal</h2>



<p>At launch, Diablo 4 towns were built with immersion in mind. Vendors were spread out. Cities felt alive. You had to walk through them.</p>



<p>That worked during the campaign.</p>



<p>In the endgame, though, constantly running between blacksmith, jeweler, occultist, and stash quickly became frustrating. Blizzard later adjusted vendor placement after heavy player feedback.</p>



<p>Temis looks like the next step in that evolution. A compact layout built specifically for seasonal farming.</p>



<p>There are still players who prefer immersive cities. For them, spreading out NPCs feels more natural and less like checking off chores. But most comments agree: <strong>in a seasonal ARPG, efficiency wins.</strong></p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">A Mediterranean Hub in a Dark World</h2>



<p>Another talking point is the visual style.</p>

<p>Temis clearly visualizes the Mediterranean or Greek-inspired aesthetic. Brighter stone. Open spaces. A different vibe compared to some of the darker zones we had so far.</p>



<p>The change is overall very welcome, but there is also the worry that it might clash with Diablo&#8217;s tone, which has always been rather dark and gritty. Not bright.</p>



<p>Of course, keep in mind that we do not have a full reveal of the new city and Skovos Isles yet, but the change in style is already very noticeable just from the few trailers and glimpses we have seen so far.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Other Details and Endgame Comfort</h2>



<p>There were also questions about <strong>Pit access</strong> and the upcoming expansion. Blizzard has not said anything about removing the Pit from Cerrigar, so this may just be an <strong>additional entry point</strong> located within a new hub, rather than a replacement.</p>



<p>Either way, Blizzard clearly understands that town layout affects how the endgame feels. When you are salvaging, crafting, tempering, and rerolling gear every few minutes, long travel paths stop feeling immersive and start feeling exhausting.</p>



<p>If Temis delivers a compact, easy-to-follow layout built around natural progression between vendors, it could become one of the most appreciated changes in the expansion. <strong>Having every vendor bundled up together in the center of town is a big W!</strong></p>

<p>Of course, we still have to wait and see the final layout. But given that this was shown in Blizzard&#8217;s preview videos, players can likely look forward to it as their new hub.</p>

<p>Blizzard has revealed a new cross-game reward between <strong>World of Warcraft: Midnight</strong> and <strong>Diablo 4</strong>.</p>



<p>With <a href="https://www.icy-veins.com/wow/midnight-expansion-guide" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">WoW Midnight</a> now live in early access, players can unlock a cosmetic pet in <a href="https://www.icy-veins.com/d4/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Diablo 4</a> simply by progressing through the new expansion. And yes, it is exactly what it sounds like: a demonically upgraded chicken carrying a tiny house on its back.</p>

<p>The pet is called the <strong>Bawkhaus</strong>, and it is one of the more unusual crossover rewards Blizzard has done in a while.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">How To Unlock The Bawkhaus Pet</h2>



<p>Unlocking it is rather straightforward. To get the pet in Diablo 4, you need to:</p>



<ul>
<li>Play through World of Warcraft: Midnight&#8217;s introduction questline</li>



<li>Earn the &#8220;Echoes of Midnight&#8221; achievement</li>
</ul>



<p>Once that achievement is unlocked, the Bawkhaus Pet becomes available in Diablo 4 as a cosmetic companion.</p>



<p>Blizzard&#8217;s post simply states that &#8220;Sanctuary rewards those who walk through Midnight,&#8221; confirming this is an official account-wide crossover bonus.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Other Blizzard Cross-Game Rewards</h2>



<p>It is just a small cosmetic bonus, but it is another example of Blizzard encouraging players to move between its games, something we have seen more frequently across Warcraft, Diablo, and even Overwatch in recent years.</p>

Blizzard Is Giving Diablo 4 Players the Most Unusual Pet Yet


<p>Since launch, <a href="https://www.icy-veins.com/d4/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Diablo 4</a> has been missing one of the franchise&#8217;s most iconic secrets: the hidden Cow Level. Despite multiple seasons and even the <a href="https://www.icy-veins.com/d4/guides/vessel-of-hatred-overview/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Vessel of Hatred expansion</a>, nothing concrete has surfaced so far around the Cow Level.</p>



<p>Now, with the upcoming Lord of Hatred expansion launching in April 2026, the theory is back, and even louder than ever.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Players Think It Might Finally Happen</h2>



<p>A recent <a href="https://www.reddit.com/r/diablo4/comments/1rbm0g7/prediction_loh_will_finally_add_the_cow_level/?utm_source=share&amp;utm_medium=web3x&amp;utm_name=web3xcss&amp;utm_term=1&amp;utm_content=share_button" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Reddit thread discusses</a> the upcoming Lord of Hatred expansion, and many players are wondering if it could be the moment Blizzard pulls the trigger. The reasoning is a growing collection of suspicious items that mirror past Cow Level requirements.</p>



<p>In Diablo 2, players combined Wirt&#8217;s Leg and a Tome of Town Portal in the Horadric Cube. For Diablo 3, things worked a little differently. You had to craft the Staff of Herding that opened access to a similar secret, Whimsyshire.</p>



<p>And in Diablo 4, there is nothing concrete yet. However, players have already discovered a few Cow-related items and events:</p>



<ul>
<li>A Relic drops after you kill 666 Cows in under 666,666 seconds of killing the first cow</li>



<li>A Bloody Wooden Shard if you kill a cow from Kehjistan or Hawezar. The Shard is said to have the letter &#8220;W&#8221; carved on it. This is referencing Wirt&#8217;s leg that you needed in D2 for the Cow Level</li>



<li>A Musty Tome item that also references Diablo 2&#8217;s Cow Level</li>



<li>Some other items that also reference Diablo 2&#8217;s Cow Level</li>



<li>A Key to the Forlorn Hovel obtained by dropping the other items inside the Cow fountain in Ked Bardu</li>



<li>You can obtain a potion by using the key in a home at the very east of Scosglen</li>



<li>After that, more steps are unlocked in Vessel of Hatred</li>
</ul>



<p>None of them leads anywhere meaningful right now, but it might be soon. A lot of community members gathered together to figure out all the current &#8220;steps.&#8221; If you are intrigued by it, you can take a look at <a href="https://www.wowhead.com/diablo-4/guide/zones/secret-cow-level" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Wowhead</a>, as they did a perfect job in recording everything in detail.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">What About the Horadric Cube?</h2>

<p>Some players believe that once Lord of Hatred introduces the <a href="https://www.icy-veins.com/d4/news/players-are-not-sure-diablo-4s-horadric-cube-will-fix-loot-fatigue/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Horadric Cube system</a>, the current final steps could finally combine into something, possibly crafting a special key, sigil, or compass that will then open the portal to the Cow Level.</p>



<p>Right now, it is pure speculation, of course. All of this might just be funny easter eggs. The dev did mention before that they try to keep Diablo 4 &#8220;<em>as grounded as possible</em>.&#8221; But it is starting to become a little bit suspicious.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Not Everyone is Convinced</h2>



<p>Some players argue that Blizzard has, indeed, simply seeded these items as long-running Easter eggs to keep the myth alive, nothing more.</p>



<p>Others point out that previous Cow Levels were linked closely to Tristram and Diablo himself, and neither of those is in Diablo 4&#8217;s current storyline. This led a lot of players to believe that until Diablo really appears, we will most likely not get any secret level.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">An Important Part of Diablo</h2>



<p>The Cow Level is not just a meme, but a big part of Diablo&#8217;s identity. For many players, the secret level in Diablo 2 and the absurdity of Whimsyshire in Diablo 3 are some of the best moments of the franchise. </p>



<p>That is why every Diablo 4 expansion pushes players to wonder if Blizzard finally added it or not. Of course, if they did <a href="https://www.icy-veins.com/d4/news/everything-announced-in-the-diablo-4-spotlight-stream/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">add it to Lord of Hatred</a>, they would most likely not officially announce it until some players actually find it.</p>



<p>And until then, the hunt continues.</p>



<p>There is currently no data-mined confirmation of a Cow Level in Diablo 4. But if Blizzard ever does add one, Lord of Hatred would be the perfect time, especially since the Horadric Cube returns.</p>



<p>Until April 2026, it remains what it has always been: a rumor and a simple theory, and a lot of &#8220;moo&#8221; in Reddit comment sections.</p>

Will Diablo 4 Finally Add a Cow Level in Lord of Hatred?


<p>Blizzard reportedly wants to release Diablo games more frequently in the future.</p>



<p>In a recent <a href="https://variety.com/2026/gaming/news/blizzard-plans-updates-diablo-wow-overwatch-johanna-faries-1236670302/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">interview with Variety</a>, Diablo IV executive producer Gavian Whishaw reflected on the franchise&#8217;s history and the fact that, in over 30 years, Blizzard has released just five Diablo titles. He added that over the next 30 years, he hopes the team can &#8220;<em>do a few more than that, maybe get some out faster.</em>&#8220;</p>



<p>Given the gap between Diablo 2 and Diablo 3, and then Diablo 3 and Diablo 4, that comment quickly caught the community&#8217;s attention. And for good reason!</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">A Faster Diablo Cycle?</h2>



<p>For context, Diablo 2 launched in 2000. Diablo 3 followed in 2012. Diablo 4 released in 2023.</p>



<p>That means fans had to wait more than a decade between main game titles. Twice.</p>



<p>Whishaw&#8217;s comment does not confirm a new Diablo game is in development. It does, however, suggest <strong>Blizzard would like to avoid another 10-plus-year gap in the future.</strong></p>



<p>And that has triggered quite the debate.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Community Reaction Is Divided</h2>



<p>Most players support the idea of a more consistent release cadence. <strong>A 3 to 5 year window between major Diablo releases is often mentioned as a reasonable middle ground</strong>, especially compared to the 10-plus-year waits of the past.</p>



<p>However, not everyone agrees.</p>



<p>One thing that keeps coming up in the Reddit thread is quality over quantity. A lot of the replies are about the same concern. If Diablo games start coming out faster, does that mean smaller launches, more aggressive monetization, or something that feels closer to an annual cycle? That is where many of the worries come from.</p>



<p>There is also the argument that Diablo 4 is still a work in progress. Quite a few players would rather see Blizzard double down on expansions, endgame improvements, and long-term support instead of already talking about what comes after it.</p>



<p>And then, of course, there are also some who point out that longer development cycles do not automatically guarantee better games. Diablo 4 itself launched after more than a decade of waiting, and opinions on its endgame and post-launch support remain… mixed.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">So What Happens Now?</h2>



<p>Currently, this is simply a leadership perspective on long-term franchise planning. There is no announcement of Diablo 5. There is no confirmed change to a faster release model. And there is no timeline attached to Whishaw&#8217;s comment.</p>



<p>However, the idea that <strong>Blizzard hopes to release more Diablo titles over the next few decades</strong> is now officially on record<strong>.</strong> With Microsoft ownership and a renewed focus on long-term strategy, it is not surprising that cadence is part of that conversation.</p>



<p>Judging by the reaction, it is pretty clear, though, that <strong>players want more Diablo, but not at the cost of quality.</strong></p>

Blizzard Hopes to Release Future Diablo Games Faster


<p>The world of Sanctuary has always felt massive. Across the Diablo franchise, we’ve explored pieces of it, revisited familiar locations, and heard endless lore about regions we’ve never set foot in—but no single game has ever shown us the whole thing. With <a href="https://www.icy-veins.com/d4/news/preorder-lord-of-hatred-to-unlock-paladin-early-in-diablo-4/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Diablo 4’s <em>Lord of Hatred</em></a> expansion on the horizon and players finally heading to <a href="https://www.icy-veins.com/d4/news/diablo-lore-bites-skovos-isles-diablo-4/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Skovos</a> for the first time, it raises a big question: will Diablo 4 eventually take us across all of Sanctuary?</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">The Whole of Sanctuary</h2>



<p><a href="https://www.icy-veins.com/d4/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Diablo 4</a> already boasts one of the largest maps in the series’ history. From the deserts of the Dry Steppes to the frozen peaks of Fractured Peaks, there’s <a href="https://www.icy-veins.com/d4/news/the-horadric-cube-could-finally-fix-diablo-4s-endgame/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">no shortage of ground to cover</a>. Even so, players have started to wonder if this is just the beginning, or if Blizzard plans to push the map even further outward.</p>

<p>As of now, only an estimated 30–40% of Sanctuary is actually playable. Entire regions still sit beyond the current borders, with the Skovos Isles lying just beneath the existing map. That opens the door to a lot of possibilities. Will future expansions keep pushing west into unexplored territory, or will Blizzard focus on fleshing out what’s already here? Both paths bring <a href="https://www.icy-veins.com/d4/news/echoing-hatred-is-diablo-4s-new-endless-endgame-mode/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">exciting opportunities</a>, new lands to discover or deeper dives into familiar regions, but they also come with some real concerns.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Too Big to Travel?</h2>

<p>Since launch, Diablo 4 has drawn criticism for how small its world can feel. Compared to older, hand-drawn maps of Sanctuary, the in-game world can feel surprisingly small. You can ride across entire zones on horseback in just a few minutes, which slightly undercuts how massive the world is supposed to be.</p>



<p>If Diablo 4 eventually includes all of Sanctuary, does that mean players could ride from Kyovashad to Mount Arreat in no time at all? In <a href="https://www.icy-veins.com/d4/news/lord-of-hatred-campaign-bridges-diablo-2-lore-and-diablo-4-systems/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">older Diablo titles</a>, the world felt enormous largely because travel took time. The long journeys sold the idea that Sanctuary was vast and dangerous. So is Diablo 4 shrinking the world for gameplay’s sake, or has Sanctuary always been this compact, and earlier games simply implied more distance than actually existed?</p>



<p>Or maybe the Dark Wanderer just never thought to use a horse.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Gameplay vs. Reality</h2>

<p>Map size aside, many players would gladly return to the western kingdoms, especially Tristram. In earlier games, Tristram felt isolated and mysterious, like just one small piece of a much larger, unseen world. The events there carried weight because they felt distant and contained.</p>



<p>But if those same locations were dropped into Diablo 4’s open world, would we be able to sprint through the settings of the first three games in minutes? Would that make Sanctuary feel smaller than ever, or simply more honest?</p>



<p>At the end of the day, Diablo 4 sits at a crossroads between gameplay convenience and world-building scale. Expanding Sanctuary sounds incredible, but how Blizzard handles that expansion may define how large or small the world ultimately feels.</p>


Will Diablo 4 Ever Reveal All of Sanctuary?


<p>There is one moment in <a href="https://www.icy-veins.com/d4/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Diablo 4</a>&#8216;s campaign that still gets people talking. Late in the story, Lilith makes her pitch. Not just as a villain or the Daughter of <a href="https://www.icy-veins.com/d4/news/diablo-lore-bites-where-is-diablo-lord-of-hatred/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Hatred</a>, but as someone who genuinely believes she is trying to save Sanctuary, even if her methods are&#8230; questionable.</p>



<p>For a brief second, it almost feels like the game is offering you a choice. And then, your character shuts her down automatically. There is no dialogue wheel, no real hesitation, and our character just refuses.</p>



<p>And that is where the debate starts.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">&#8220;Why Tease It If We Cannot Choose?&#8221;</h2>



<p><a href="https://www.reddit.com/r/diablo4/comments/1rc0bxz/missed_opportunity_imagine_if_we_could_have/?utm_source=share&amp;utm_medium=web3x&amp;utm_name=web3xcss&amp;utm_term=1&amp;utm_content=share_button" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Some players argue</a> this was a missed opportunity.</p>



<p>Diablo 4 spends most of its campaign building Lilith up as something more than a standard big bad. She is ideological, charismatic, and she genuinely believes Heaven and Hell will destroy humanity unless someone ruthless takes control.</p>

<p>The game leans heavily into moral gray areas. Angels are not exactly noble. Humans are not exactly innocent. Even Lilith is not pure chaos for chaos&#8217; sake. So when the campaign hints at the possibility of siding with her, even briefly, it creates an expectation. Not necessarily of a full alternate ending, but at least some little possibility.</p>



<p>The argument from that side is simple:</p>



<ul>
<li>A branching final act could have given more replay value for the main story</li>



<li>Both paths could eventually converge</li>



<li>It would have reinforced the moral ambiguity that the story builds up</li>



<li>Diablo 4 flirts with player choice, but never commits</li>
</ul>



<p>And for some players, it feels like that was a missed opportunity.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">That Was Never the Game</h2>



<p>On the other hand, there is a strong argument that Diablo 4 made the right call.</p>



<p>Diablo has never been a branching-narrative RPG. It is not Baldur&#8217;s Gate or Mass Effect. The series has always told a linear story about humanity standing against cosmic forces, and it never mattered if those forces came from Heaven or Hell.</p>



<p>Letting players side with Lilith would create massive complications:</p>



<ul>
<li>Expansions would need dual storylines</li>



<li>Seasonal content would have to acknowledge different allegiances</li>



<li>Future villains (<a href="https://www.icy-veins.com/d4/news/diablo-4-mephisto-lore-before-lord-of-hatred/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">like Mephisto</a>) would need alternate narrative setups</li>



<li>And canon would get messy fast</li>
</ul>

<p>From a development standpoint, it is not a small change.</p>



<p>And beyond that, there is the lore question. Lilith might be more nuanced than past <a href="https://www.icy-veins.com/d4/news/diablo-lore-bites-prime-evils-never-truly-die/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Prime Evils</a>, but she still dominates with hatred and evil. Siding with her would not really fit with the main theme of the franchise, where humanity is surviving by refusing both Heaven and Hell.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">The Real Question Is Not About Lilith</h2>



<p>The bigger discussion is not really &#8220;we should have joined Lilith.&#8221; It is more about Diablo giving players meaningful narrative choices at all. Diablo 4 came closer than previous entries to blurring moral lines. It humanized its antagonist more than the series ever has. For once, it was more than just pure evil versus good.</p>



<p>But in the end, it stayed traditional.</p>



<p>And maybe that is what makes this debate interesting. Diablo 4 feels like it wants to explore gray morality, but it ultimately pulls back to preserve a clean thing.</p>



<p>Was it a missed evolution?</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">A &#8220;What If&#8221; That Will Not Go Away</h2>



<p>Even now, long after launch, players still circle back to that scene. Not because they all wanted to become demon cultists. But because it felt like the story was building toward something bold, and then chose not to.</p>



<p>It might be a flaw or just a conscious design choice, depending on what you think Diablo should be.</p>



<p>But it is clear that for a series built on fighting darkness, Diablo 4 made people seriously consider standing in it for a moment.</p>



<p>And that alone says a lot about how different Lilith was. Or just about how likable Blizzard made the Queen of Hell in Diablo 4. </p>

Did Diablo 4 Miss an Important Story Opportunity With Lilith?


<p>When <a href="https://www.icy-veins.com/d4/guides/dark-citadel-guide/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Dark Citadel</a> launched with <a href="https://www.icy-veins.com/d4/guides/vessel-of-hatred-overview/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Vessel of Hatred</a>, it felt like something completely new for <a href="https://www.icy-veins.com/d4/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Diablo 4</a>. Real mechanics. Actual coordination. Boss fights you could not just delete in three seconds.</p>



<p>And yet, after all this time, almost nobody runs it.</p>



<p>Now, as we move closer to Lord of Hatred, the Citadel feels less like core endgame content and more like a forgotten side experiment. A lot of players feel like this is really weird because the content itself is not bad. It is actually really good, but the problem is that there is just no reason to do it.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">The Content Is Really Good</h2>



<p>If you have run Dark Citadel at least once, you probably noticed something immediately! You cannot just faceroll it. There are mechanics, split objectives, and phases that require communication. It is the closest Diablo 4 has come to something that resembles a proper raid encounter. On top of that, the bosses are really cool, and the fights really show that a ton of effort has been put into designing them.</p>



<p>For some players, that is exactly what they wanted. But for most, it stops there. They do it once. Maybe once per season for fun. Then they move on. Not because it is terrible, but because it is not worth it.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">The Forced Grouping Problem</h2>



<p>The number one complaint is not even about difficulty. It is about access. Dark Citadel is group-only content in a game that is overwhelmingly played solo. It is not an MMO, and a lot of players do not want to be forced into group content.</p>



<p>Many <a href="https://www.reddit.com/r/diablo4/comments/1rbzoo3/dark_citadel_is_some_of_the_best_content_ingame/?utm_source=share&amp;utm_medium=web3x&amp;utm_name=web3xcss&amp;utm_term=1&amp;utm_content=share_button" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">players in some discussions on Reddit</a> say the same thing: they would try it more often if it could be done solo. Or at least if matchmaking was seamless and active.</p>



<p>Instead, you either:</p>



<ul>
<li>Convince friends to run it</li>



<li>Use party finder and hope for the best</li>



<li>Or just do not bother</li>
</ul>



<p>And that is one of the main issues that kills participation.</p>



<p>Some hardcore players do not want to risk their character with random teammates. Others simply do not want MMO-style obligations in an ARPG. Console players point out the lack of proper local co-op support. And plenty of solo players just refuse to engage with forced group content entirely.</p>



<p>The result is a mode that required significant development resources being ignored by most of the playerbase.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">The Lack of Rewards</h2>



<p>Even players who like the Citadel agree that the rewards do not justify the effort, and that is an entire other problem.</p>



<p>The gear is not meaningfully better than what you can farm elsewhere. The cosmetic rewards are limited and static. Once you have earned them, there is no seasonal refresh, no rotation, no evolving incentive to return.</p>



<p>And Blizzard is in a tricky spot here.</p>



<p>If they make the rewards too strong, players will say grouping is mandatory.<br>If they keep them weak, nobody runs the content.</p>



<p>Right now, they have leaned toward the second option, and participation reflects that.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">What Players Would Change</h2>



<p>The suggestions are surprisingly consistent:</p>



<ul>
<li>Make it soloable, even if tuned differently</li>



<li>Add proper matchmaking or a queue system</li>



<li>Introduce rotating cosmetic rewards (monthly or seasonal)</li>



<li>Slightly increased Greater Affix drop rates</li>



<li>Tie it into future systems like <a href="https://www.icy-veins.com/d4/news/diablo-4-endgame-is-getting-a-massive-rework/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">War Plans in Lord of Hatred</a></li>



<li>Give guilds an actual purpose by linking Citadel clears to guild bonuses</li>
</ul>



<p>That last one is interesting. Guilds in Diablo 4 currently have almost no gameplay relevance. Citadel could have been the system that made them matter. A lot of players would love things like a 24h XP bonus if the Citadel has been cleared between guild members.</p>



<p>Instead, it feels disconnected from the rest of the game.</p>



<p>Dark Citadel is not bad content. It is just content without a clear role. In a game where most players log in for fast progression, solo farming, and seasonal power, a semi-raid with modest rewards and forced grouping sits in an awkward middle ground.</p>



<p>As Diablo 4 approaches its next expansion, the question is not if the Dark Citadel should exist, but if Blizzard wants to double down on it or let it fade into the background.</p>



<p>Because right now, it might be one of the most technically interesting pieces of endgame design in the game.</p>



<p>It just does not have a reason to matter.</p>
