Between all the free pulls and anniversary celebrations, it would’ve been easy to miss that Zenless Zone Zero (ZZZ) Version 3.1 is also making some meaningful changes to the game’s core systems.
HoYoverse has shared a full breakdown of the update’s gameplay improvements, and while there are plenty of smaller quality-of-life tweaks sprinkled throughout, a handful of additions stand out as the biggest changes arriving alongside Version 3.1.
Deadly Assault is Getting a New Endgame Challenge
The headline addition is Adversity Mode, a brand-new difficulty coming to Deadly Assault.
Players will first need to earn 9 Stars in the current Deadly Assault season to unlock it, after which they’ll face a single boss encounter built specifically for players looking for an even greater challenge. The twist is that the boss becomes increasingly dangerous as its HP drops, forcing players to survive increasingly punishing attacks as they close in on victory.

Like the standard mode, players can study each boss’s strengths and weaknesses before entering, while a separate leaderboard tracks the highest scores earned specifically in Adversity Mode.
Thankfully, players who aren’t interested in chasing leaderboard rankings won’t be missing out on any Polychrome. Instead, Adversity Mode rewards cosmetic items, including exclusive titles and time-limited name cards. The limited item rewards are assumed to be by season, but that has yet to be confirmed.
Old Event W-Engines Are Finally Returning
One of the biggest quality-of-life improvements has nothing to do with combat. Beginning in Version 3.1, previous event-exclusive W-Engines will become available through the Potential Archive Store, letting players obtain weapons that were previously impossible to acquire after their original events ended.

HoYoverse hasn’t confirmed whether future event W-Engines will eventually follow the same path, but it’s an encouraging precedent for players who worried they had permanently missed important gear. Version 3.1 also introduces batch locking and unlocking for A-Rank W-Engines, allowing players to automatically unlock copies for Overclocking without having to manage every weapon individually.
New Players Will Have a Much Easier Time Catching Up
Version 3.1 is also giving new Proxies a much smoother onboarding experience. The existing Proxy Trial Handbook is being replaced by a revamped Beginner Guide, featuring phased progression missions that reward Polychrome, Disk Drives, and other valuable resources as players work through the game’s systems.
Veteran players won’t miss out either, with HoYoverse confirming that eligible rewards will be distributed retroactively through the in-game mail system. On top of that, Inter-Knot progression has been accelerated, helping newer players reach end-game content much faster than before.
A Few More Nice Surprises
Version 3.1 also sneaks in several smaller additions worth mentioning:
- The Association Supplies Store is expanding with new photo frames, graffiti marks, emotes, and camera customization options.
- Remielle even receives her own unique camera pose, available through the shop.
- The new cosmetics are purchased using Investigation Certificates, which can be earned by clearing the new Adversity Mode.
While the second anniversary rewards will naturally grab most of the headlines, Version 3.1 is shaping up to be one of ZZZ’s strongest gameplay updates as well. There’s a lot more arriving with this patch than just new banners.
