Genshin Impact’s Artifact Reroll System: How to Maximize Your Dust of Enlightenment

Shikhu's Avatar by Shikhu

Genshin Impact’s long-awaited artifact reroll system has finally arrived in Version 5.7, giving players the ability to reallocate substat upgrades on fully leveled 5-star artifacts using a resource called Dust of Enlightenment. But with reroll attempts limited and tied to high-difficulty content and the Battle Pass, it’s crucial to use them wisely.

Here’s a full breakdown of how the system works, what Hallowed Exegesis means, and how to maximize your gains with smart strategy.

What Is Artifact Rerolling in Genshin Impact?

Dust of Enlightenment is a currency/item introduced in 5.7 that allows players to reroll the substat upgrade rolls on an artifact that has been leveled to +20. It doesn’t change the substats themselves, but it lets you redistribute where the upgrade rolls went. If your Goblet of Dreams rolled into flat HP four times instead of Crit DMG, now’s your chance to fix it.

You choose two substats to prioritize. The system guarantees at least two total rolls between the selected stats, with the rest rolled randomly. You can reject the new results if they aren’t better than your original version.

You’ll earn up to 8 Dust per patch, with 3 coming from the Stygian Onslaught endgame event (though the hardest one rivals Abyss Floor 12 in difficulty), and 5 coming from the Battle Pass.

However, not all artifacts cost the same to reroll:

  • Feather & Flower: 1 Dust
  • Sands, Goblet & Circlet: 2 Dust

There is also a pity system shared between all artifacts, Hallowed Exegesis which at 6/12 dust spent grants an artifact with 3 guaranteed rolls, at 18 you get 4 instead.

Best Advice for Rerolling Artifacts

Prioritize Sands, Goblets, and Circlets

These slots are far more valuable and harder to farm. They also cost 2 Dust each, but the upside is much higher. Feather and Flower tend to max out faster during normal grinding, so they’re less worth rerolling.

Only Reroll Artifacts That Started With 4 Substats

You get more value per Dust this way, as you’ll reroll all 5 upgrade rolls instead of 4. Rerolling a 3-substat starter caps your potential before you begin.

Avoid Artifacts With Multiple Bad Stats

A piece with 1/2 good stats and 2/3 bad ones isn’t worth rerolling. You’re still gambling, and the odds of coming out with anything significantly better are low.

Choose Characters With Complex Stat Needs

Rerolling makes the biggest difference on characters with multiple ideal substats, think a lot of your DPS characters such as Raiden, Arlecchino, Mavuika. Don’t waste Dust on characters like Nilou or Zhongli (Shielbot build) who only want HP, or characters like Mizuki and Kazuha who only really want EM/ER.

These DPS that are the main thing you play in a team and therefore less likely to be replaced, while supports on the other hand can more easily be replaced. You do not want to invest your rerolls into a support that your also not a huge fan of, for them to be replaced in your DPS’s team next patch.

Be Considerate of Hallowed Exegesis Breakpoints

If you’re approaching 6, 12, or 18 rerolls, time your reshaping to land on your most promising artifact. Don’t hit the 4-roll milestone on a mediocre piece just because it’s ready.
