World of Warcraft has grown massively over the years, but many of Azeroth’s most iconic locations have remained largely untouched since their original stories were told.
During a recent Q&A with WoW Ambassadors on the WoW Portal Room Discord, Game Director Ion Hazzikostas discussed Blizzard’s approach to revisiting older parts of Azeroth. When asked about the possibility of revamping more older zones, Ion explained that Blizzard is excited about returning to familiar locations—as long as it’s balanced with exploring new places.
According to Ion, Blizzard was initially concerned about how players would react Midnight’s Silvermoon and Eversong Woods, saying “I can easily imagine players saying that ‘this is just a bunch of rehashed content, we wanted something new, lazy Blizzard once again.’”
However, the playerbase’s reaction to seeing Silvermoon reimagined has shown Blizzard that that’s not the case!
So, Where to Next?
With The Last Titan set to return players to Northrend, Blizzard is thinking about how other iconic locations could be revisited in meaningful ways. During the interview, Ion specifically mentioned the following locations:
- Silvermoon
- Northrend
- Stormwind
- Orgrimmar
- Westfall
- The Barrens
“It will really be a shame if in WoW going forward some of the most iconic places in the game—whether it’s Silvermoon, Northrend, Stormwind, Orgrimmar, Westfall, Barrens and others—are places that we can never go again, because we already told a story there.”
Of course, this is no confirmation (Silvermoon and Northrend aside) that we’ll see these specific areas reimagined, but it could give us a bit of insight into where Blizzard’s minds are at when it comes to revamping old Azeroth.
For now, players can look forward to rediscovering Northrend in The Last Titan. But if Ion’s comments are anything to go by, WoW’s future could be looking pretty nostalgic.
