Cell Confirms a Stripped-Down Version for Midnight

Cell is confirmed to stick around in Midnight, and according to developer Enderneko on Discord, an ultimate stripped-down version is coming with the next expansion.

About Cell

Cell has become one of the most popular addons for WoW. Having nearly 4 million downloads on CurseForge, this addon replaces default raid frames and is fully customizable. It’s inspired by similar addons such as VuhDO, which we also have a comprehensive guide for, and Grid2.

While not exclusively for healers, the addon is very popular among the healer community. Cell is an addon we also recommend for a few of our specializations, such as Restoration Shaman, Restoration Druid, and Augmentation Evoker.

UI Addons Sticking Around for Midnight

With Blizzard relaxing some of the restrictions planned for Midnight, some addon creators who were previously unsure or had stopped development, are coming back for Midnight.

Who’s Back in the Game in Midnight?

Cell isn’t the first UI addon to confirm they’re sticking around. Earlier this month, ElvUI said they are continuing development for Midnight, after previously halting all development during the Alpha.

Not All Addons Are Returning

However, not all addons developers are making a return. At the start of the Alpha, WeakAuras announced they were ending support for Midnight. Even after Blizzard loosened restrictions and provided further clarification, WeakAuras confirmed they will not be returning for Midnight.

In our exclusive interview with Game Director Ion Hazzikostas and Lead UX Designer Crash Reed before the Midnight Alpha launch, Blizzard explained how addons will function going forward, including their inability to read combat logs.

Since then, Ion has reiterated that Blizzard does not want to take away custom UIs. The goal is to improve the base UI while removing addons’ ability to rely on real-time combat logic.

Choosing Between the Default UI and Using an Addon

Blizzard’s goal is to make the default UI strong enough that addons are optional, not mandatory. But for players who have spent years building muscle memory around their UI, that choice is not going away anytime soon.
