Interview Highlights
Last week, we were allowed to participate in an interview and showcase about the upcoming WoW D&D Rulebook, and we have summarized some of the most important talking points.
- James Wyatt, the legendary Wizards of the Coast designer, is the Lead Game Designer behind the World of Warcraft project.
- From the interview, it was clear that everyone involved in the creation of the book has been long-time fans of the Warcraft franchise, reaching as far back as Warcraft 2/3, with many on the team having played WoW on-and-off for a long time.
- The main goal with this collaboration is to bring both WoW players to D&D and D&D players to WoW. The team’s intention is to foster a space where both communities can meet and engage with one another, so they can lose themselves in the lore and history of both franchises.
- The main guide of the journey is Chromie, with the adventures taking place in alternate timelines. This gives players and DMs freedom to explore “what-ifs”, being able to rewrite events of the past. Plus, it gives the opportunity to go beyond Azeroth, allowing characters created in these campaigns to visit other spaces, even Faerûn. Take your Blood Death Knight to Ravenloft, if you want!
- A lot of time was spent in the class design process to ensure they felt unique as subclasses and specializations within the D&D ruleset. This was accomplished by using existing base-classes and creating lots of new spells, traits, and feats.
- The book is a love letter to Azeroth, with a lot of focus being put into designing not only classes, but the world itself. Factions, races, dungeons, and zones have been incorporated into the D&D world and contain detailed descriptions for campaigns. Dungeons even have detailed dungeon maps and statblocks for special enemies, from Edwin VanCleef to the Lich King.
- The focus of this book is Azeroth, so don’t expect to find information about the Dark Portal, Argus, or other cosmic locations
- The book contains extensive lore on many different factions, with extra material supporting six different time periods and conflicts in Azeroth’s history. Each of these has adventure suggestions in the book for every level range:
- Alliance vs Horde
- The Burning Legion
- Dragonflights
- Elemental Lords
- Old Gods and Void Lords
- The Scourge
- With most tabletop groups consisting of 4-5 players, one of the main goals was allowing small groups to be able to tackle both dungeon and raid encounters, which means defeating bosses like Illidan and Arthas without needing to run a 20-man tabletop session. Groups will still find raid bosses way more dangerous than regular dungeon bosses, of course, but there is no need to book the local town hall for your sessions.
- The design team would love to see people homebrew more races, specializations, or encounters.
- The book contains a lot of art pieces, some of which we’re highlighting below, and might be worth buying for its art alone.
- D&D Beyond will fully support the book on release, allowing players to recreate their WoW characters with only a few clicks. Campaigns there will support all dungeon maps, monsters, and more, all the while making it easy to combine with other D&D 5e books and supplements.
Art Highlights
We were provided with an early copy of the book by Wizards of the Coast, so we decided to highlight some of the amazing art available in the book below.
You can click on the images to see them in a larger size, and for any collector or WoW connoisseur, we highly recommend getting it in print for the Art alone! The book has over 120+ artworks in it, including full-page prints.
