Lock-ed In: Demonology Takes Over the Midnight Season 2 Mythic+ Tier List

Blizzard would rather have you play Demonology. Demo has surged to S tier with the recent buffs. Let’s take a look at how the new tuning pass has shaken the meta, with this being the final tuning pass until week 5, according to Blizzard’s tuning schedule.

Midnight Season 2 Mythic+ Tier List

Below is the tier list updated for this week. This list reflects the current state of the meta and recent tuning changes. You can read more about how these lists are built in the Criteria section at the bottom of the post.

It is Important to highlight that this is only the second week of the season. Some players have yet to unlock their 4-piece bonus, and the sample size is still pretty small, with many players busy overtiming in The Venomous Abyss. There will be a lot of movement in the coming weeks.

Highlights for the Week

Below, we will recap the biggest highlights for the week. As always, if you’re looking to see the complete analysis, check out our individual guides. The guides cover in detail the reasoning behind every spec’s placement.

You can also see the tier list explained below in video format:

Demonology Soars to the Top

The numbers are in. With the most recent buffs to demons and other spells, Demonology became the highest DPS spec in Mythic+. The buff increased its damage by about 12.5% in AoE scenarios. However, it is highly possible this was not intended, with Blizzard mentioning its goal being single target buffs, but it equated to a substantial AoE buff.

This change elevate Demo to the top, dethroning Arms Warrior in the mean time. Arms is still be the best melee DPS spec, damage-wise.

Windwalker Rehabs

After being a disappointment at start of the season, Windwalker bounces back. Our prediction that the spec was 4-piece dependant has materialized and the spec has started to deliver numbers similar to those observed during PTR testing. WW currently holds the number one DPS in all-stars ranks.

Note, however, that Windwalker is likely the hardest DPS spec in the game to play, especially Conduit of the Celestials. If you spot a bad Windwalker in your pug keys, it is probably a player not having a clue how to play the spec.

“No Bad Tanks Anymore”

The latest round of tuning brought nice buffs to Vengeance DH and Prot Paladin, while also giving another small drip of buffs to Prot Warriors. With this, you can feel free to invite any tank for your keys, as all specs are able to complete 99% of the keys. You still want to stick with the top performers like Blood DK, Guardian Druid, or Brewmaster Monk when pushing at the very highest levels.

On the Falling Side

  • Destruction is dropping this week despite the buffs received. Specs around it are moving up faster than Destro, leaving it behind.
  • Preservation is dropping to A tier. Despite the dominance in raids, Preservation is in a similar level as Holy Priest for keys.
  • Augmentation is in a sad state, being the spec that deals the least damage in the game right now. Save the lizards!
  • Shadow is also looking very stale. The spec has acceptable AoE, but lacks in single target.

On the Rise

  • BM Hunters continue to climb with three consecutive buffs from Blizzard.
  • Survival Hunters also rise with a 7% buff.
  • Mistweaver solidifies as the third-best healer with the recent tuning pass.
  • Havoc creeps ahead of Devourer, being better in every aspect than its ranged counterpart except single-target damage.

Criteria of the Tier List

This tier list is based on the strength of each DPS specialization during Midnight Season 2. The placement takes both the raw throughput and the utility kit into consideration. Damage profile for Season 2 dungeons also plays a role in deciding positioning.

You can read the full disclosure about the criteria on the Tier List hub. Ultimately, Tier Lists are an opinion, which you may disagree with. However, this is our current opinion as tuning stands. The list will change week over week, and we will cover future changes as the meta progresses. Stay tuned for updates.
