Mages and Rogues! The Best-Performing Specs in the Venomous Abyss Raid and Mythic+ Season 2: “Day 1” Logs

Staff's Avatar by Staff

Both the NA and EU guilds have had at least a day in the new raids and dungeons, so it’s time for a sneak peek at what things are looking like in the DPS logs! The Venomous Abyss is looking particularly hard on Normal and Heroic, with the final boss not even dying yet on Heroic, and the penultimate boss only being defeated by three guilds! Mythic has had absolutely no kills, so we can’t even take a peek there.

With just the first seven bosses really giving us any proper data (the Lair boss Nymrissa was lumped in with the rest in the Venomous Abyss), the preliminary state of the logs below has never been more… preliminary! We’ll get back with a fuller picture at the end of the reset, but for now let’s dive in.

Note: We are using normalized scores instead of raw DPS for the Warcraft Logs rankings. Normalized scores take into account the outlier boss fights where certain specs could stack massive DPS (due to the nature of the fight, whether it’s AoE spam or something else), which would then affect their overall score for the whole raid.

Heroic Venomous Abyss

Overall Damage 95th Percentile

Mages and Rogues are back! After some low points in Season 1 we have not one but two different Mage specs on top in the different rankings. Arcane is slightly in the lead here in the top percentiles, slightly ahead of the pack of five right behind it. Devastation has made a comeback after a long time in the gutter, and Fire joins it in a meteoric rise compared to last season. The rest of the top 10 has quite a few familiar faces, with the biggest missing spec being the largest shift since Season 1. Augmentation went from the very top to almost the very bottom, swapping its No.1 spot for 26th. Out of all the preliminary stats here, that one’s most likely to change throughout the season, or even week.

Overall Damage All Percentiles

In the generalist bracket, we see another Mage on top, with Fire claiming the top spot. Arcane isn’t too far behind, sandwiching Subtlety in 3rd. We see all three Rogues in the top 10 here, With Outlaw doing a lot worse and Assassination a lot better than in the top percentiles. Devourer (and DHs in general) drops out of the top 10 entirely, with Destruction joining it just outside. The bottom is the same as in the top percentiles, as things are not looking promising for Frost DK, Demonology, Feral and Windwalker, at least before some tuning.

Tidebound Grotto

Neryssa has been lumped in to the Venomous Abyss raid on Warcraft Logs, despite living in her own grotto. She has a fairly different top 10, although we do see mostly the same faces there. Elemental is barely edging out Shadow for the top spot, and Devourer is doing a little better than in the Abyss. The bottom specs look about the same, with Unholy making it both DKs in the bottom 3.

Mythic+ DPS Logs

We’re comboing the raid with Mythic+ this time around, for a fuller preliminary look at the start of the season. The dungeon stats are more reliable than the raid this time around, as there aren’t the final two bosses that didn’t get almost any play.

Note: The below logs are based on POINTS, and not actual damage or healing. This means that they log the timed completion for the specs, with higher keys getting more points, obviously. The time in which the dungeon is completed is also a factor. It is a much, much smaller factor, however. It grants only a few points for significantly faster completions compared to just any in-time finish. We’re also using the Normalized Aggregate Scores numbers, for clarity. This means that the top spec is marked as 100 and then the rest are ranked in relation to that peak point.

95th percentile DPS

Devourer remains very strong, moving up a spot to the very top compared to the end of Season 1. Subtlety has climbed to the top of the Rogue pile, but all three specs are doing very well and are all in the top 5! Devastation is also doing well, and we even see a Hunter and a Death Knight in the top 10!

All Percentiles

Devastation races past both Devourer and Subtlety in the generalist bracket, making an even bigger comeback than in the raid, climbing 24 spots since the end of Season 1. We see Demonology in the top 10 as well, with Arms going very strong here as well as in the top percentiles. The bottom actually still hosts two Mage specs, with Arcane sitting in the middle of the pack.

High Key Raw DPS Numbers

Note: We’re also taking a look at the raw damage numbers from Mythicstats. They take the top runs for extremely high keys (+10-16) from WarcraftLogs and list the overall DPS for the dungeon, which includes non-combat time as well. They’re ranked by the average DPS numbers, with the very top of the top shown next to it.

The high keys are especially sparse when it comes to logs, so these rankings may be even more inaccurate than the above. They confirm it’s a Rogue’s world in Mythic+ for now, as Devastation isn’t doing so great here. Devourer is still very strong, and Fury, despite being very low in the overall percentages, is doing great here. Mages are also doing better, especially Fire, with Feral being the other big outlier compared to the regular keys.

We’ll be back at the end of the reset with some proper numbers for the raid, dungeons, as well as the healers and tanks! And, as always, you can check out our tier lists, our raid guides, and our class guides, updated with the latest changes! And for even more stats, head on over to Warcraft Logs.
