Midnight Reignites the Race and Class Customization Debate

The end goal of every MMO has always been the same: collection, customization, and style. Once the boss is dead and the season wraps up, the real endgame begins. And with Midnight introducing the Haranir Allied Race alongside the Devourer Demon Hunter, players are once again asking the same familiar question—why does race and class customization still feel so limited?

New Races, New Specs, Same Customization Concerns

Blizzard has tried to address this issue throughout World of Warcraft’s lifetime, but for many players, it remains a recurring pain point with every new expansion. The conversation usually flares up during expansion launches, but it really ignites whenever a new allied race enters the picture. We saw it in Dragonflight with the Dracthyr, and now it’s come full circle with the Haranir.

Older races like Orcs, Trolls, Worgen, and several others are especially feeling the gap. Their customization options pale in comparison to newer races, particularly when it comes to hairstyles, facial features, and thematic flair. Many players expected Midnight to deliver expanded Blood Elf or Void Elf customization as well, only to walk away disappointed.

That frustration only grows when NPCs are running around with better looks and stronger styles than what players can actually access. One standout example is Tocho, an NPC dripping with style that players simply can’t replicate.

Outcry for More Customization

And it’s not just a general request anymore. Hardcore Demon Hunter fans have been especially vocal. Since Void Elves can now become Demon Hunters, Horde players have been pushing hard for Nightborne to be on the list. Not only does it make sense from a lore perspective—thanks to Suramar and its ties to the Legion—but for many, it feels long overdue.

The timing doesn’t help either. With the new Devourer spec on the horizon, players are begging Blizzard to introduce void-themed customization options for Demon Hunters. Right now, they’re still locked into fel-infused tattoos and glowing green eyes, despite being able to wield the Void. The disconnect is hard to ignore, especially when Overwatch is getting a proper Devourer skin for Genji, but WoW players can’t

So the real question becomes: should Blizzard expand race-specific class customization? At the moment, it’s limited; players get unique Druid forms, Paladin mounts, and Shaman totems. Dracthyr are a rare exception, gaining special holy or shadow-infused wings when using certain Priest abilities.

Blizzard has already proven they can do this. The technology and creativity are clearly there. So the question isn’t whether more race and class customization should be added to WoW—it’s when Blizzard finally decides to pull the trigger.
