Players finally have the Haranir as a playable allied race—complete with a plethora of customization options. But a growing suspicion among the community suggests they weren’t originally meant for Midnight at all.
Something’s Not Quite Right
Midnight has officially been live for one week, and players are starting to find clues to back up the theory that Harandar and the Haranir were originally intended for The War Within.
Reddit user Ok-Satisfaction-9708 claims that fishing in The Gulf of Memory Delve increases Khaz Algar Fishing, and not Midnight Fishing.
@Portergauge on X found a World Quest that asks you to document creatures for Brann, while questlines with Gazlowe in Harandar feel misplaced.
Presence in The War Within Story
Haranir first appeared during The War Within. Orweyna and a group of Haranir scouts had questlines in Azj-Kahet, with cinematics hinting at their importance. During this time, Haranir customisation options and lore were datamined, and theories about the mystical “Rootlands” went wild. Yet after their initial spotlight, their story basically stopped.
At the time, leaks indicated that The Rootlands were originally planned to sit between Hallowfall and Azj-Kahet.

There is also a very large empty cavern called The Whispering Chasm, between Hallowfall and Azj-Khahet, which teleports you away if you get too close. Players have wondered if this was the initial entrance to Harandar/The Rootlands.
So, What Happened?
No direct statement from Blizzard confirms whether Harandar was cut from The War Within or not, but the evidence seems hard to ignore. Either way, Harandar and the Haranir found a perfect home in Midnight.
