What’s even more exciting is a variable in the website’s live production code which suggests that we’re playing an actual ARG – an Alternate Reality Game – to find out more about what’s to come in the StarCraft universe.
An ARG – Just Like Project Blackstone
The variable __argNetworkTracker, which originates from starcraft.blizzard.com‘s production code, implies this campaign is an actual Alternate Reality Game, inviting the community to hunt for all kinds of breadcrumbs across Blizzard’s website.
Loyal StarCraft fans will remember that this isn’t the first ARG they’re playing. Back in 2013, a transmedia campaign called Project Blackstone helped introduce StarCraft 2’s Heart of the Swarm campaign. Back then, the campaign’s virality was unmatched, including Twitter accounts for characters appearing in the project’s storyline.
Fans Are Reconstructing the Messages
Needless to say, the community is, once again, fully intrigued. With the power of generative AI, comprehensive websites have been created in mere hours to track the ARG’s current status. The current material is part of “Transmission 01”, implying that additional transmissions could follow over the course of the next few days.
The thing we do know now is that Blizzard is most definitely playing an ARG with the community as we speak, and that more information, in true StarCraft fashion, remains classified – for now!
