Long before real-world pandemics became part of everyday conversation, World of Warcraft accidentally created one of the most infamous outbreaks in gaming history. A viral clip shared by @LostMemeArchive on X is reminding players just how chaotic the Corrupted Blood incident of 2005 really was.
The Corrupted Blood Incident
Whether you remember living through the events, or this is your first time hearing about it, this is what went down.
It all started in Zul’Gurub, during the Hakar encounter. The debuff—
Corrupted Blood—was only meant to be active during the boss fight. However, a bug involving Hunter pets allowed it to escape the instance.
And once it got out, the debuff spread like wildfire.
As you can see in the video, players were dropping left, right, and centre. Cities turned into mass graveyards. Some players tried their best to heal others, but (unsurprisingly) many tried to intentionally spread the plague.
The Corrupted Blood incident even caught the attention of actual epidemiologists, as they compared the in-game outbreak and player behaviour to real-world disease models.
Still to this day, the incident remains one of the most strange yet fascinating moments in WoW’s history!
