Final Fantasy XIV hit the Nintendo Switch 2 on Aug. 4, with Switch 2 players given roughly a month to enjoy the game for free. This free period was introduced to give Square Enix ample time to ensure server stability. However, that time is almost up, and the free period for FFXIV on the Switch 2 is set to expire on Monday, Sept. 7, at 11:59 p.m. in each time zone.

Switch 2 players who’ve bought the game won’t have to start paying for a sub immediately, though. The 30-day free play period that comes with the Starter Edition and Complete Edition will begin on Tuesday, Sept. 8. After this period, Switch 2 players will need to pay a monthly subscription fee by purchasing FFXIV Coins. Free Trial players can continue playing free of charge.

How Much Are the FFXIV Switch 2 Subscription Fees?

An FFXIV subscription will cost 1,300 Coins for an Entry-level monthly membership. A Standard-tier membership for 30 days will cost 1,500 Coins. The 90-day plan costs 1,400 Coins monthly. The major differences between the Entry and Standard memberships are the price and the maximum number of characters you can have per data center.

One piece of good news is that players with an active FFXIV sub on another platform can buy a Switch 2 subscription for half price. For example, if you have an existing FFXIV account on an Xbox console, you pay only 650 Coins instead of 1,300 Coins for an Entry-level membership on the Switch 2.

The price breakdown for FFXIV Coins is as follows:

Number of CoinsPrice in USD
500 Coins$4.99
1,000 Coins$9.99
1,500 Coins$14.99
3,000 Coins$29.99
4,200 Coins$41.99
10,000 Coins$99.49

It’s important to remember that you can use FFXIV Coins purchased from the Nintendo eShop only with the Switch 2 version of the game. You won’t be able to combine these with Coins bought through the Microsoft Store. Likewise, you can use Coins bought through the Microsoft Store only with the Xbox version of the game.

How Do I Purchase FFXIV Coins?

It’d be nice for Switch 2 players to be able to buy a subscription with their debit or credit cards like PlayStation, Windows, Mac, and Steam users do. But like Xbox players, they’ll need to purchase FFXIV Coins with real money, then use this digital currency to purchase a subscription.

Thankfully, this is a fairly simple process. Here’s how to do it:

  1. Select Buy FFXIV Coins in the game launcher.
  2. Choose how many Coins you want to buy.
  3. Confirm your order in the Nintendo eShop.
  4. Open the game launcher and log in.
  5. You should see your FFXIV Coins in your account.

If you made a purchase while logged into the game, you’ll need to log out and log back in. You should now see your updated balance.
