A New Era for Heroes of the Storm

Heroes of the Storm enters a new era. Blizzard shared how the game is evolving, how it has changed over the years, and what to expect in the future.

Xal’atath has joined Heroes of the Storm!

Heroes of the Storm is receiving a major new update with Patch 57! Starting today, Xal’atath becomes the 91st Hero to join the Nexus, and the first in almost six years. Whether you took a few years off from soaking lanes, are completely new to the Nexus, or have been patiently waiting for this day, we hope you all have a blast jumping in to experience all that is new with the game.

Xal’atath, Harbinger of the Void

A Void-wielding Ranged Assassin joins the Nexus. Xal’atath externalizes her power through a summonable object, the Dark Heart, rewarding spatial control, foresight, and extended fights: she grows more dangerous the longer a battle lasts.

You can unlock Xal’atath now for USD $7.99! For those of you that would prefer to use gold, our aim is to make her available for gold later this year, tentatively set for the end of November. For launch, we have two key goals that led us to only making her available through direct purchase right now.

The first is simplicity: we want to make it as easy as possible for all players to acquire, whether you have played every day for over a decade or this is your very first time trying out Heroes of the Storm. The second is to help us best gauge sustainability, which leads us into the philosophy and design pillars guiding our team.

Evolving the Nexus

A driving philosophy for the Heroes of the Storm team is sustainability. We want to ensure we all can continue enjoying this game for a long, long time, and that requires a thoughtful approach that avoids overextending ourselves while also keeping the game feeling fresh for the community.

This started back in 2022, when the game had essentially gone into maintenance mode. As part of that transition, the team focused on optimizing the game to run better on newer systems while reducing workload on the team to keep things moving smoothly. As that work progressed, the key work the community saw was dedicated to bug fixing, spread over two patches in 2023.

In 2024, with tools and systems behind the game updated and bugs heavily reduced, the team began to focus on balance. If you go back to those patch notes, you’ll see a gradual increase in balance updates from patch to patch: from LiLi’s Jug of 1000 Cups healing slightly increasing to Samuro receiving updates across multiple abilities. Modes, queue changes, and events all started to receive increasing attention, all with the goal of improving the game across the board.

After about a year and a half of balance updates, we were ready to start doing bigger and bigger things. Some changes we’ve made include:

  • Mythic Quest Rewards that provide an exciting, yet rare reward for your performance
  • Hero reworks and talent updates that create new builds, stronger fantasy, and memorable moments
  • Revamps and targeted updates across nearly every battleground
  • The return of Haunted Mines
  • Shorter respawn times, meaning less waiting and more time in the fight
  • Many other changes to improve clarity and consistency

Then our 10-year anniversary arrived in 2025. Enter Gear Head Thrall, the first new cosmetic release in years. In addition to the team testing updated tools for releasing new content, this also allowed us to prove that there is a community eager for new things. The reception was incredible, and gave us the encouragement to finally dream of what we all really wanted… new Heroes.

Design Pillars

We spent the last year developing not only Xal’atath, but the process of creating a new Hero. All these updates, from balance changes to Xal’atath herself, have followed six key pillars.

  • Hero Fantasy: bring each Hero’s power fantasy to life.
  • Unconventional Abilities: lean into what makes the Nexus and its Heroes distinct.
  • Team Success: keep the competition between rival teams, not within your own.
  • Mythical Power: matches should offer moments where players feel uniquely powerful, brilliant, or legendary.
  • Meaningful Games: matches are either meaningfully contestable or decisively ending.
  • Fun: Heroes of the Storm is fun, and that is something we can’t ever forget.

We could write 5000 more words on all of these and exactly how we have aimed to implement them into the game, but for now we’ll spare you all (though if you want more, let us know and we’ll dive even deeper). The core of it is that we look at Heroes of the Storm as having three distinct design eras:

  • Wacky: There were Heroes that were bold, unconventional. Characters like Abathur, Murky, Lost Vikings, and Cho’gall. They pushed the boundaries of what a Hero could be, while also immersing us in the real fantasy of these characters. For example, Cho’gall is perhaps, at first glance, potential comic relief, but their strength and power can become terrifying, and having two players in perfect sync can manifest that in a ridiculously fun way.
  • Esports: Heavy focus on competitive optimization, matchmaking, and viewership. Many incredible matches happened during this time. We were even on national TV and one of the first major collegiate esports broadcasts. The Classic Cup match at BlizzCon 2026 between Dignitas and Gen.G was a brilliant showcase of what this era brought to the game.
  • Today: In this new era, we’re focusing on the chaotic fun of HOTS that makes it different from other MOBAs: being whimsical while also making sure matches are contestable and fun, which helps lead to great competition amongst friends and strangers.

What’s Next

At BlizzCon, Johanna mentioned another possible Hero and we have something in the works, but aren’t ready to share details yet. Much like the journey from 2022 to now, our focus is ensuring that we are sustainable while making meaningful updates. There will be a minor balance patch or two over the next few months, during which we’ll assess how things are going and then determine potential release plans for Hero 92. We’ll keep you updated once we know more.

Toward that end, our focus right now is on Patch 57. Keep sharing your thoughts and feedback on the forums, Reddit, and social media. Your voices have kept this game we all love alive and that means more to us on the Heroes of the Storm team than we could ever truly express.

Let’s have some fun and we’ll see you in the Nexus!
