Rogue and Mage Are Dominating in Mists of Pandaria Classic – Week 4 Recap

This week of Mists of Pandaria Classic is the 4th week of Tier 14, and the first week of Phase 2, bringing a few buffs and nerfs across the board. We’ll analyze the performance of all specs, including tanks and healers, breaking down the changes within the meta for the week through Warcraftlogs.

95th Percentile DPS

In the 95th percentile of logs, Subtlety Rogue continues to dominate single-target fights, still holding the top spot on the rankings. Arcane Mages have fallen in the ranks slightly, with Frost Mages rising simultaneously with the recent buffs and nerfs to both specs. Affliction Warlock was also nerfed a bit on this patch, causing them to fall a few rankings as well. Lastly, we see Fury Warrior surpassing Arms Warrior on single-target fights with the recent buffs, but it remains a “middle of the pack” DPS spec this early into the expansion.

All Percentile DPS

Looking at all percentiles, Marksmen Hunter sees a large boost in rankings, thanks to its high single-target burst damage, even with minimal gear. Frost Mages see a rise for a similar reason, being a strong single-target DPS spec without much gear. Elemental Shamans remain at the bottom of the list, despite being buffed recently, with Enhancement Shamans being barely ahead of them, keeping both Shaman DPS specs at the bottom of the rankings.

Tanks and DPS

Tanks have finally fallen to the bottom of the DPS meters, whereas previously they were ahead of the pack. The additional gear on DPS players with extra resets, additional buffs to DPS specs, and single-target fights in Terrace of Endless Springs have caused tanks to drop back down below DPS.

Healers

Holy Priest continues to dominate the healing meters, with many top-end guilds running several of them in the same raid. The rest of the healers remain fairly close to each other, with Discipline Priest remaining at the bottom of the healing charts for the time being. Discipline has mostly only received nerfs so far during Mists of Pandaria Classic, whereas the other healing specs have received various buffs. We believe Discipline Priest will likely receive a few buffs in the near future, likely reducing the mana cost of their spells, namely Smite iconSmite.

Class Popularity

A surprise to no one should be the popularity of both Hunters and Warriors in the meta, but shockingly, Shamans are one of the most popular classes overall, despite their DPS specs ranking very low.

With each week of raiding comes more gear, increasing the damage of specs that scale harder with gear. As the expansion continues to progress, we expect to see the popularity of certain specs diminish while others that scale better take over. For example, we expect to see Frost Death Knights rise, eventually replacing Unholy Death Knights in the meta. Warriors will experience a similar situation occur, with Arms Warriors being replaced by the higher scaling of Fury Warriors as more gear is obtained.
