Starting your adventure in WoW Forever means picking up a lot of loot, but not everything you find deserves a permanent spot in your bags or bank. Some items are worth keeping for your next upgrade, others can make or save you a bit of gold, and a few are best sent straight to a vendor.
If you’re new to World of Warcraft, welcome aboard! Here’s a quick summary to what the different item colours mean and what you can choose do with them, as well as how to grab yourself some bags and inventory space.
Grey Items: Vendor Trash
Grey items are the easiest to deal with. They have little use beyond equipping them when you’re short on gear at low levels, so you can sell most of them to a vendor for some extra copper or silver. Keep in mind that some grey items can still be an upgrade for your character, so double check your gear before selling.
When you visit a vendor, look for the “Sell All Junk” option at the bottom of the vendor tab to clear out items marked as junk. Just remember to check your equipment first, especially if you’re still waiting for an upgrade for a particular slot!
White Items: Crafting Materials and Consumables
White items are where things get more interesting. This category includes crafting materials, food, water and other useful supplies, so don’t assume everything with a white name should be sold to a vendor.

Materials such as cloth, ore, herbs, stone and ingredients can be valuable to players who use professions. Tailors need cloth, blacksmiths work with metal, alchemists rely on herbs, and even hunter pets need certain foods to keep them happy! If you’re gathering materials for your own profession, keep what you need. Otherwise, check the Auction House to see whether another player will pay more than a vendor. For more information on each of the professions, check out our profession guides here!
Food and water deserve a look, too. Food also helps you recover health between fights, while water restores mana for classes that use it. Try to keep supplies that suit your level, and replace older versions as you progress. If your character doesn’t use mana, you can skip the water and save yourself a bag slot.
Green Items: Check Your Stats Before Selling
Green gear is an upgrade over basic white equipment in many cases, but the colour alone doesn’t tell you whether an item is worth wearing.

Compare its stats with your current gear and think about what your class needs. Strength, agility, intellect and stamina all serve different purposes, so an item with a higher rarity isn’t always the better choice. Always check what main stat your character uses first. It’s worth checking out our class guides here for more information about stats, gear and more!
If a green item improves your character, then equip it! If you’ve outgrown it, check whether it’s soulbound. Soulbound gear can’t be traded through the Auction House, so your options are usually to sell it to a vendor or disenchant it if you have the Enchanting profession.
Blue Items: Rare Doesn’t Always Mean Best
Blue items are classed as rare, and they can offer useful upgrades. Though, an older blue item may have worse stats than a green piece you’ve picked up several levels later.
Compare the numbers before swapping equipment. If the blue item is no longer useful, check whether it’s soulbound and whether you can disenchant it. Enchanters can turn eligible green and blue gear into materials used to level their profession.
Alternatively, blue items can sell for a lot of gold on the auction house if it isn’t soulbound. If the item isn’t an upgrade and you don’t want it for transmog, then always check how much it sells for on the auction house.
New Bag Quests Have Been Added To Forever!
One quest every new character should complete are the respective 6-slot bag quests in your starting zone. These quests have been newly added into Forever, making inventory management a little easier! You can find the names of them below:
| Race | Quest Name | Required Level | Recommended Level |
| Night Elf | “Soft Saber Pelts“ | 4 | 7 |
| Human | “Book Return“ | 1 | 6 |
| Gnome/ Dwarf | “Grund and Gozwin“ | 4 | 6 |
| Orc/ Troll | “Carry Your Weight” | 4 | 7 |
| Undead | “Sticks and Bones” | 4 | 7 |
| Tauren | “Grace of An’she and Mu’sha” | 1 | 4 |
| Skyborne | “The Problem With Prideclaws” | 4 | 6 |
A Quick Tip For Making Gold
Before selling crafting reagents and non-soulbound gear, please check the Auction House if you can! Crafting materials and useful consumables can fetch more gold from other players than they will from a vendor. If you’re planning to level another character later, consider storing useful materials in your bank instead of selling everything. Your future blacksmith, tailor or alchemist will thank you for it.

Desperately Need Some More Bags?
There are a few ways that you can acquire new bags in WoW Forever. One easy, yet tedious way is to get random bag drops from enemies that you kill. In the earlier levels, you can get 6-slot bags this way if you’re lucky! Rares in the starting zones also have an increased drop rate for these bags, so be on the lookout for any spawns.
Alternatively, if you find yourself running past a general goods and supplies vendor, then they have reagent bags that you can buy to have a bit more space. They also sell 6, 8, and 10-slot normal bags depending on how much currency you’re willing to part with. You can also run into Bag Vendors, that sell a 12-slot bag if you have the coin spare (though, these come at the price tag of 10 gold each).

If you’re willing to go out of your way to get the most bag space possible early game and maybe earn yourself a bit of silver, then running to the closest major city and learning tailoring will be your best bet. Tailors can make a 6-slot reagent bag and learn the recipe very easily at tailoring level 5. You can buy the recipe from the nearest tailoring supplies vendor. To get the normal 6-slot bag recipe, you need to be tailoring level 45 and buy the “Linen Bag” recipe from select tailoring merchants that can be found in major cities across Azeroth.
The Trusty Old Bank Alt
Have way too many reagents or rare items that you want to keep stored away, but nowhere near a major city? If you make an alt character and run to the nearest major city, then you can use the mailbox feature to your advantage. This method works best if you already have some silver, as it costs 30 copper to send mail. Here’s what you need to do below:
- Move the main character to the nearest settlement or quest hub, as there will almost always be a mailbox in these areas.
- Send the items you want to keep to your alt that you have parked near a mailbox in a major city.
- Your alt can either put these items in your bank, keep it in their inventory, sell on the auction house, or send back the mail if needed.

Depending on what faction you choose, you need to have a bank alt on in the same faction (Alliance or Horde). You get 48 free bank slots to use, and each new bank slot costs more than the last.
Have fun out there, and remember to regularly do some inventory maintenance!
