The recent Zenless Zone Zero (ZZZ) Version 3.2 Special Program has given players plenty to discuss, but one particularly interesting detail was tucked away during Claret‘s gameplay demonstration. HoYoverse revealed that Counter Assist is being worked on for Defense Agents, potentially giving the game’s defensive characters a much-needed new way to interact with combat.
Counter Assist for Defense wasn’t discussed during the Special Program, instead appearing only in a brief text box during Claret’s demonstration. Considering Counter Assist is one of the major mechanics being introduced alongside the new Armorer class, its potential arrival for Defense Agents could be considerably more important than the brief mention suggests.
Defense Agents Could Finally Be Getting Some Attention
The Defense role has historically been one with very little actual usage in ZZZ‘s game state. They have been glorified, but worst, supports for a few teams, and more often than not, players have been better off running teams without them entirely. The role has had a genuine lack of a coherent identity because of that.
Counter Assist is a natural fit for Defense Agents, whose gameplay already revolves around reacting to enemy attacks via cheaper Defense Assists and protecting teammates. Allowing these characters to turn incoming attacks into offensive opportunities could make the role considerably more active, giving Defense a stronger identity beyond simply providing shields and defensive utility.

There is still plenty of uncertainty surrounding the feature. HoYoverse has only confirmed that Counter Assist is a work-in-progress for Defense Agents, with no information on when it will actually arrive beyond it coming in the future. It does beg the question of whether the development is connected to a broader Defense overhaul.
Still, the timing is certainly notable. Claret is introducing Counter Assist through the new Armorer class in Version 3.2, while Defense Agents are already confirmed for the same mechanic. That could simply mean Counter Assist is being expanded across more of ZZZ’s combat system, but it could also be an early indication that the Defense role is finally due for some attention.
With ZZZ continuing to introduce increasingly complex combat mechanics, a more interactive defensive playstyle could give future Defense Agents considerably more room to shine, but more importantly, give the role defining purpose. For now, Counter Assist is an upcoming feature for Defense Agents, but that tiny text box may have revealed the first hint of something much larger coming for the Defense role in the future.
