Build Requirements
The following Unique Items are required for build functionality to get started on the Lightning Storm Druid:
Skill Tree Points and Skill Bar
Raging Lightning Storm is not taken because it is bugged and not giving the extra strikes.
Spirit Boons – The Druid Class Specialization
Druids unlock powerful Spirit Boon passives, giving offerings to the animal spirits to receive their Blessing. Once fully unlocked, activate the final Boon by Spirit Bonding with one of the four animal spirits to take two passives from that row.
Boon Name | Animal | Effect |
---|---|---|
Wariness | Deer | Take 15% reduced damage from Elites. |
Scythe Talons | Eagle | Gain +5% increased Critical Strike Chance. |
Avian Wrath | Eagle | Gain 30%[x] Critical Strike Damage. |
Bolster | Wolf | Fortify for 15% of your Maximum Life when you use a Defensive Skill. |
Masochistic | Snake | Lucky Hit: Critical Strikes with Shapeshifting Skills have up to a 75% chance to Heal you for 5% Maximum Life. |
- If Spirit Generation while leveling and gearing is not sufficient, replace the Eagle’s Scythe Talons with the Wolf’s Energize.
- In hard hitting push content, change the Eagle’s Scythe Talons to the Eagle’s Iron Feather.
- Overload can be used as a damage option in farm content if self-healing is sufficient.

Unique Items
The following Unique Items are recommended for the Lightning Storm Druid.
- (Required) Tempest Roar is required for the build to function, making Lightning Storm a Werewolf Skill as well as providing significant Spirit Generation. This also allows Lightning Storm to benefit from Shapeshifting passives such as Quickshift, Toxic Claws, paragon nodes like Lust for Carnage, and synergize with other Unique Items Mad Wolf’s Glee.
- (Required) Unsung Ascetic’s Wraps gives extra Lightning Strikes and double-strikes on Critical Strike.
- (Optional) Hunter’s Zenith will provide significant cooldown resets on Debilitating Roar allowing the Skill to have strong uptime, as well as help maintain Wildheart Hunger stacks and trigger shapeshifting bonuses such as Quickshift and Heightened Senses.
- (Optional) Mad Wolf’s Glee is an excellent offensive Unique Item, giving movement speed and Skill Ranks to Werewolf Skills.
- (New, Optional) – Wildheart Hunger gives a stacking damage multiplier to Shapeshifting Skills. The 5 second buff will add a stack every two second. This will mean using Debilitating Roar or other Shapeshifting Skills at least every 5 seconds to maintain the multiplier. This can be somewhat disruptive to gameplay, or fall off between packs when Debilitating Roar is not being reset from skills with Hunter’s Zenith.
Tempest Roar can be target-farmed from Duriel. Unsung Ascetic’s Wraps can be target-farmed from The Beast in the Ice.
Uber Unique Items
The following Uber Unique Items are situational to the build:
- (New) Yen’s Blessing is an interesting piece. While a damage loss to Wildheart Hunger, it has a strong capability in push content because it can keep Debilitating Roar uptime high when fighting enemies that are not getting killed frequently enough for resets from Hunter’s Zenith.
- While Ring of Starless Skies was beneficial in previous seasons, a standard ring gets access to Tempers for Damage to Close or Distant for a higher Thunderstruck multiplier, and there is more access to Resource Cost Reduction and Generation from several sources. This makes it more of a comfort pick than a strong choice.
Rotation and Playstyle
- Pre-place Ravens against Bosses for Critical Strike Chance.
- Maintain Shapeshifting buffs like Heightened Senses and Wildheart Hunger Unique Item.
- Apply Debilitating Roar for survivability and Shapeshifting buff maintenance.
- Use Petrify to Stun and apply Critical Strike Damage bonuses to Bosses and Elites
- Cast, Channel and hold your Lightning Storm to slay your foes.
Check out the advanced Mechanics and Playstyle section for a more in-depth description on how the build works, what synergies exist and what to look out for.

Advanced Information
It is time to start on your Lightning Storm journey!
Or see below for further information on how the build works, as well as further explanations for Paragon, Gearing, and Gameplay, and available playstyle options.
Build Mechanics
The Lightning Storm Druid has simple execution as a build, but a lot of mechanics are coming together to make it work.
Lightning Storm is our Core Skill and main ability. It is a Channeled Skill. While channeled:
- The storm grows, covering a larger area as the ability is held. This size is preserved for 6 seconds between channels. As the storm grows, the Lightning Bolts can grow more inaccurate.
- Unsung Ascetic’s Wraps adds strikes and double-strikes on Critical Strike.
- Channeled abilities cannot Overpower.
Debilitating Roar is our major Defensive Skill, and constantly reset by Lightning Storm kills triggering Hunter’s Zenith. As a Werebear skill, it will also help maintain Shapeshifting skills like Quickshift, Heightened Senses and Unique Item Wildheart Hunger. There may be some downtime when fighting bosses that do not summon adds.
Companion Active Skills are largely unused. They will passively give strong multiplier to Lightning Storm from Shepherd’s Aspect. Ravens can be preplaced on a boss when Bossing for the Critical Strike Chance.
Petrify applies a Stun and Critical Strike Damage multiplier debuff on enemies. This is great vs bosses and elites, but will also disrupt things like the Suppressor enemy affix.
Our Key Passive is Lupine Ferocity. This plays well with Critical Strike based abilities including the double strike of Unsung Ascetic’s Wraps, Toxic Claws and Lust for Carnage.
Channeled or Tapped
Lightning Storm as a channeled ability can either be held, naturally pulsing out its cast, or repeatedly tapped to cast the ability. There are benefits to doing either. Held abilities do not benefit from Improved Attack Speed, whereas the frequency in which the ability can be tapped can be improved from Attack Speed.
This also makes Critical Strike the preferred stat from Elixirs over Attack Speed. Critical Strikes play well with several other abilities within the build like Toxic Claws, Lust for Carnage and Unsung Ascetic’s Wraps.
Either way, with the changes to Quickshift, Heightened Senses and the introduction of Unique Item Wildheart Hunger, casts of Lightning Storm will be disrupted a bit more than previous to maintain these Shapeshifting buffs every 5 seconds.
Paragon Information
The Paragon Board is a progression system unlocked at Level 50, giving player power through Common stat Nodes, Magic affix Nodes, Rare leveled Glyphs, and Legendary board-exclusive Nodes. For general paragon board information, check the guide here.
The recommended Paragon boards with images for the Lightning Storm Druid are listed above. The following section goes over some explanations and descriptions for the pathing process for the Lightning Storm Druid.
Broadly speaking, decisions for pathing through the Druid paragon board are divided into three categories:
- Damage – The paragon boards provide a significant amount of Damage Multipliers and Additives. This includes:
- Socketed Glyphs such asFang and Claw, Earth and Sky, Spirit and Fulminate.
- Legendary Nodes such as Ancestral Guidance and Thunderstruck.
- Magic and Rare nodes such as Harmony for Willpower and Damage to Core Skills or Deluge for Critical Strike Damage and Damage to Crowd Controlled Enemies.
- Defense – The paragon boards help reach goals on Damage Reduction, Armor and Resistances. This includes:
- Damage Reduction is improved from Werewolf andTerritorial secondary effects, as well as individual nodes providing bonuses like Damage Reduction against Vulnerable enemies.
- Resistances are improved from Magic and Rare Resistance nodes, with Earth and Sky and Fang and Claw bonuses improving their nearby Resistance nodes.
- Armor goals are reached with the help of Armor nodes in Inner Beast.
- Build Functionality – The paragon boards improve Spirit Generation for the build from a few sources, including:
- Lust for Carnage provides Spirit on Critical Strike from Werewolf abilities. This works for the Lightning Storm druid because Tempest Roar changes Lightning Storm into a Werewolf Skill.
- Various Max Spirit and Spirit on kill Magic and Rare nodes on the Ancestral Guidance board.

Fulminate | For every 5 Dexterity purchased within range, you deal +2.0% increased Lightning damage. Bonus (25 Dexterity): You deal 12%[x] increased Lightning damage to both Healthy and Injured enemies. |

Spirit Generation
The Lightning Storm Druid does not use a Basic Attack Spirit generator; instead, it relies on several alternative sources for Spirit Generation and Spirit Cost Reduction:
- Tempest Roar gives a Lucky Hit chance to Storm Skills like Lightning Storm to grant Spirit.
- Lust for Carnage legendary Node grants Spirit on Critical Strikes with Werewolf abilities, including Lightning Storm.
- Paragon nodes for Spirit on Kill in the Ancestral Guidance board.
- Resource Cost Reduction on Weapon and Resource Generation on Rings.
In the Endgame, these are sufficient sources for Spirit Cost needs. However, if the above are insufficient sources while leveling and gearing, consider using one or more of the following supplementary options:
- Use Key Passive Perfect Storm.
- Use the Wolf’s Energize Spirit Boon, replacing The Raven’s Scythe Talons.
- Use Aspect of the Umbral or Starlight Aspect, replacing Aspect of the Stampede.
- Spirit Per Second on Chest or Boots.
- Take points from the Thunderstruck board to take the Inner Beast Paragon Node.
- Attempt to Greater Affix or Mastercraft quality improve the Spirit Cost Reductions or Spirit Generation on gear.
- Worst case, in very early leveling and gearing use Wind Shear as a Basic Skill builder.
Codex of Power and Gearing Affixes
With the release of Season 4 and Patch 1.4.0, Gearing has changed significantly. For the dedicated page, see the updated Gear Systems and Itemization Overview guide here.
The Codex of Power has changed. Extracting any aspect now upgrades it in the Codex of Power. All Aspects now exist in the Codex of Power. For example, extracting a Aspect of the Changeling’s Debt of a higher rank than you currently have in your codex improves the Codex. All future applications of Aspect of the Changeling’s Debt will have that higher value. This also means Gambling Obols can be a significant method of improving your Codex of power. Aspects in the Codex can be favorited.
Check our Legendary Aspect and Codex of Power Guide to see which slots can have which legendary powers.
For Gearing Affixes, Normal Items have no affixes, Magic Items have 1 affix, Rare Items have 2 affixes, Legendary Items have 3 affixes, and Unique Items keep their 4 affixes. Applying Legendary Aspects from your Codex will not improve the amount of Affixes on items. In the Endgame, this means Legendary Items are desirable and the rest are largely going to be just salvaged without much inspection. Many available affixes and their ranges have been changed. This is beneficial for this build on some Slots such as 2 handed weapon, with large Spirit Cost Reduction and Attack Speed, but will be worse on other slots. For example, every single resistance is an option on armor slots so rerolling at the Enchantress for the ideal affix can take many more rolls.
Ancestral Legendary items can drop with Greater Affix, indicated with a special icon * both in Inventory and on the ground. Items can have multiple Greater Affixes. Greater Affixes have a 1.5 multiplier to the base Affix.
Tempering and Masterworking
Tempering manuals are found across Sanctuary. The Blacksmith is able to apply extra affixes on items, up to two on Ancestral quality items. This would bring an Ancestral Legendary item up to a total of 5 affixes. When tempering at the Blacksmith, an item will randomly select one of the listed affixes from the chosen Tempering Manual. For example, the tempering manual could have just a single chance out of several options to give the desired affix, or give something utterly useless to the build. There is a limit to the number of times a temper can be rerolled to try to get the desired affix. This means the item can get ruined for the build, and you must try again with a new item. Unique Items cannot be Tempered.
Legendary Ancestral Items and Ancestral Unique Items can then be upgraded in quality via Mastercrafting using materials from The Pit of Artificers. This increases affix, with special increases at levels 4, 8, and 12 that upgrade the Quality of a randomly chosen affix or temper by 25%. The same affix or temper can be chosen multiple times, further increasing the quality from Magic, to Rare, and finally to Legendary.
Variant Playstyles and Options
Druids generally have options available to flex between depending on game stage, gearing process, playstyle tempo, or accessibility.
Alternative Skills
Petrify is used as a significant burst Critical Strike Damage multiplier, great against Elites and Bosses. This can be a flex skill. Other skills can be used instead depending on playstyle desires, including:
- Trample can be swapped in for another mobility tool, Fortify and Unstoppable resource, or to help maintain Shapeshifting buffs like Heightened Senses or Wildheart Hunger.
- Blood Howl can be used as a more throughput option, providing a small boost to Attack Speed. Given how much Attack Speed is available on gear already, this may be overkill. For group play, Nighthowler’s Aspect can be used for total group output.
- Cyclone Armor for a passive defensive improvement. The resistances from Cyclone Armor are a 2nd roll multiplier against your sheet Resistances, so don’t compete with the Resistance Cap. For group play, Aspect of Cyclonic Force could be used for group survival.
Debilitating Roar is a large Damage Reduction that also helps maintain several Shapeshifting Buffs for higher damage. However, in farm or trivial content where you are already overkilling enemies or incoming damage is low, feel free to swap for other options such as Trample.
For some more defensive options, swap out Nature’s Reach for Iron Fur for more Damage Reduction.
Key Passives – While Lupine Ferocity is used for crit-based interactions with Lust for Carnage and Unsung Ascetic’s Wraps, others can be used, such as
- Perfect Storm for better Spirit management
- Bestial Rampage for higher total damage at the cost of having more disruptive gameplay, requiring 2 seconds after casting Debilitating Roar to maintain the buff.
Gauntlet Optimization
The Gauntlet is a Trial event dungeon that changes weekly. The format is a point score system over 8 minutes, and players will compete in weekly Leaderboards for fame and prize.
The enemies are level 124, which is the equivalent to Tier 70 nightmare dungeons. Compared to a Tier 100 Nightmare dungeon, the enemies will hurt less, but speed counts even more!
Lightning Storm Druid has the speed, AoE, and Boss damage required to compete well in the Gauntlet.
The Gauntlet playstyle for the Lightning Storm Druid makes a few changes but plays and functions similarly. The build will drop some Damage Reductions and top-end multipliers, and instead tune for speed, damage events, and efficiency. The following recommendations are for generic Gauntlet play, and considerations may change week to week as new maps are shown.
Gearing and Legendary Affixes for Gauntlet
For the Gauntlet setup, we invest in some damage proc Aspects that are lethal against these lower leveled enemies, and go for a 1-Handed and Totem setup. Make the following changes:
- On the totem, get Critical Strike Chance, Cooldown reduction, and Resource Cost Reduction.
- Move Shepherd’s Aspect to Amulet, replacing Aspect of the Changeling’s Debt.
- Use Lightning Dancer’s Aspect and Runeworker’s Conduit Aspect on 1-Handed Axe and Totem.
Gauntlet Skills
- Remove Skill Points in Vigilance and Nature’s Reach.
- Place Skill Points in Charged Atmosphere rank 1, Electric Shock rank 2, Bad Omen rank 3.
Gauntlet Paragon Board
Replace Territorial with Electrocution. Electrocution’s effects are also triggered from Bad Omen and Lightning Dancer’s Aspect.
