Build Introduction

The Lightning StormLightning Storm Druid lashes out with Luminous Lightning! This is a Werewolf Lightning Storm build, and with the Talisman Set Rush of the Red Wolf Moon, the build becomes one of the fastest builds available to Druids.

Just starting on your druid adventure? Check our Lightning Storm Leveling Build or the Druid Leveling Guide for options on how to level, and swap to this one at Level 70.

Strengths and Weaknesses

Strengths
  • Large zones of coverage to kill enemies in a wide area
  • Pure Werewolf Form build
  • Even speedier variant options
Weaknesses
  • Werewolf builds need more defensive investment

Build Requirements

Required Uniques

Unique Item Dark HowlDark Howl is required to keep Debilitating RoarDebilitating Roar as a Werewolf skill to maintain Werewolf Form. Dropping Werewolf Form resets our Talisman Rush of the Red Wolf Moon buffs.

All Lightning Storm Variations have their content and use; feel free to try them all out!

  • While pushing and bossing, use OmniboltOmnibolt for top-end damage.
  • SupercellSupercell is great for high-density farm content like Helltides and Hordes. This is comfortable at the lower end of the same torment as OmniboltOmnibolt.
  • Hero of the StormHero of the Storm can be used as a lower, chill farmer. When used:

Earthen BulwarkEarthen Bulwark is triggered with QueQue rune, and does not need to be on the Skill Bar.

PetrifyPetrify is triggered with YomYom rune, and does not need to be on the Skill Bar.

In early gearing, use a Basic builder for Spirit. ClawClaw – Spirit – Cast Speed – Werewolf Form – DashDash is reliable. Or use Blood HowlBlood Howl – Healing – Spirit HowlSpirit Howl. This replaces HurricaneHurricane.

Eternal players complete Renown events in each zone for additional Skill Points, while Seasonal Players engage with the Season Journey and Rank for these Skill points.

Druid Class Mechanic – Spirit Boons

Use these Spirit Boons for the Lightning Storm Druid.

Boon NameAnimalEffect
Gift of the StagDeerGain 30 Maximum Spirit. Gain 5 Spirit Per Second.
Iron FeatherEagleGain 30% Maximum Life
Avian WrathEagleGain 20% Critical Strike Damage.
BoslterWolfDefensive Skills gain 40% increased cooldown reduction rate while you are Fortified. This rate is split amongst each Defensive Skill
MasochisticSnakeLucky Hit: Critical Strikes with Shapeshifting Skills have up to a 30% chance to grant Berkserking for 4 seconds.

Berkserking increases the damage of Shapeshifting Skills by 10%x.

In Farm or non-push content, Iron Feather can be replaced with Overload.

While leveling and gearing, use the Energize Spirit Boon, replacing Bolster. This will help with Spirit Management.

Druid’s primary resource is Spirit. See the Spirit Management Section on how to keep casting!

Each line of affixes is listed in order of importance, and some alternatives are given. The bolded affixes are the most important targets for Masterworking upgrades. Unique Items cannot be Tempered, but can be Masterworked.  Check the Tempering guide and Masterworking guide for more details about these topics.

Remember to fully Socket, Temper, Enchant, Aspect, and Masterwork (STEAM) your item before Transfiguring it in the Horadric Cube!

Damage Multiplier categories are significant boosts to total damage.

Aspect of Glynn's AnvilAspect of Glynn’s Anvil increases Damage Reduction per resolve, so Maximum Resolve Stacks tempers can be significant. Balance that with Maximum Life tempers, which are also important for total toughness.

After gearing, look at progression systems like Paragon next.

Uniques and Mythic Uniques

The following Unique Items are recommended for the Lightning Storm Druid.

  • Godslayer CrownGodslayer Crown is a high quality of life grip-in option to help cleave down enemies. It is especially useful during farm when using the Hero of the Storm Lightning Storm variant. Casts of PetrifyPetrify will attempt to Stun enemies, triggering the helm. Use before getting Heir of PerditionHeir of Perdition or in farm-level content.
  • Dark HowlDark Howl gloves give a strong enough multiplier to justify use. As well, it codes Debilitating RoarDebilitating Roar to be a Werewolf Skill, which allows use while still maintaining Werewolf form, which is essential for keeping our Talisman set Rush of the Red Wolf Moon bonuses active. Unsung Ascetic's WrapsUnsung Ascetic’s Wraps can be used before completing your Talisman set.
  • Dirge of AiridahDirge of Airidah is our Unique Charm, giving Storm Skills Spirit on Cast, extra damage and additional extra damage vs Vulnerable enemies. We use Overcharged AspectOvercharged Aspect for Vulnerable.

Mythic Unique Items

The following Mythic Unique Items are situational to the build:

  • Heir of PerditionHeir of Perdition – With the death of Tempest RoarTempest Roar (may it stay buried), Stormy Druids are allowed to wear the good hats. Rejoice at the great affixes and multiplier.
  • Ring of Starless SkiesRing of Starless Skies is a powerful Resource Cost Reduction tool and damage multiplier with excellent Gear Affixes. However, it competes with legendary rings that can roll Critical Strike Damage Multiplier and other strong multiplier affixes, so a well-statted near-BIS legendary may outperform it.
  • Shroud of False DeathShroud of False Death is weaker than it used to be, but the All Stats category can still be useful for the boost to Paragon Rare node Secondary Bonuses; If you can get All Stats on other sources, such as Charms, then this can be skipped entirely for a high Damage Reduction Aspected Legendary Chest.

Gems and Runewords

The following are the recommended Gem and Runeword setups for the Lightning Storm Druid:

Gems

Weapon GemsArmor GemsJewelry Gems
Grand TopazGrand Topaz for Lightning Damage MultiplierGrand SapphireGrand Sapphire for Willpower2x Grand DiamondGrand Diamond
1x Grand RubyGrand Ruby

Most of the dangerous one-shots are fire or lightning damage. Swap in more Rubies or Topazes if necessary.

Runewords

Use these Runeword combinations for the Lightning Storm Druid, placed in Armor slots:

Runeword CombinationRuneword Effects
Igni YomIgniIgni – Gain: 25 Offering. Stores Offering every 0.3 seconds. Cast a Non-Basic Skill to gain the stored Offering. (Up to 500 Offering).
YomYom – Requires: 500 Offering Overflow: Increased Stun Duration. Cooldown: 5 seconds. Invoke the Druid’s PetrifyPetrify Skill, Stunning enemies and applying a Critical Strike Damage Taken debuff.
Nagu QueNaguNagu – Maintain at least 1 active summon for 5 seconds, gaining Offering for each up to 5 Summons.
QueQue – Requires: 300 Offering. Overflow: Increased Duration. Cooldown: 1 second.
Evoke the Druid’s Earthen BulwarkEarthen Bulwark, granting yourself a Barrier.

Runewords use a conditional Rune of Ritual to generate Offering. The Rune of Invocation consumes the Offerings to trigger its effect. Runes replace Gems in gear with two sockets. Up to two sets of Runeword Pairs can be placed at a time.

Using QueQue allows us to benefit from our Skill Point investments into Earthen BulwarkEarthen Bulwark without needing it on the Skill Bar.

Using YomYom guarantees high uptime on our invested Critical Strike Damage debuff from Skill Ranks of PetrifyPetrify, as well as providing high amounts of Stun and Stagger on Bosses, without needing it on the Skill Bar.

While still gearing, consider options such as:

  • GarGar for Critical Strike Chance.
  • CirCir or NeoNeo as adequate trigger runes.

Paragon Board

The following are the preferred Glyphs, Boards, and pathing recommended for making the most of the Lightning Storm Druid.

The road to max Paragon is long. The above Paragon tabs show the following:

  • The first tab shows a setup around Paragon 200. This pathing is stricter to grab all Legendary nodes, essential rare nodes, and to fill in glyph areas.
  • The second tab is the paragon tree in its final form.

At level 15, the glyph grows in radius and gains a special effect. At level 46, the glyph grows to its max radius and gains a strong conditional damage multiplier.

Total Boards placed are now limited to a max of 5; the Starter Board and four Class Boards. Rotate boards as necessary.

For a more defensive setup, exchange Earth and SkyEarth and Sky for WerewolfWerewolf.

Season Mechanics

There are no specific seasonal mechanics in season 13. Instead, the Lord of Hatred dlc and all of its features are available to explore. This includes:

  • War Plans
  • New Skill Trees
  • Talisman Sets
  • The Horadric Cube
  • Echoing Hatred

Enjoy the expansion!

Talisman

Lord of Hatred introduces Talisman sets. The Talisman is a Seal and the Charms placed within. Charms have general affixes from a limited pool and can have Set bonuses, which grant significant power.

The ideal setup for an Ancestral Seal for the Lightning Storm Druid is the following:

  • Seal Bonus +1 Charm Slot for 6 total Charm slots. This allows for a full 5-set and Unique Charm.
  • 5/5 Rush of the Red Wolf Moon Set
  • Unique Charm for Dirge of AiridahDirge of Airidah

Ideal affixes for the Seal, Seal Bonuses, and Charms include the following in order of priority:

  • Ranks to Shapeshifting, Core, Werewolf, Storm, or Nature Magic Skills.
  • All Stats. All Stats is important for Paragon Secondary Bonus nodes.
  • Armor or Max Life.
  • Critical Strike Chance

The Rush of the Red Wolf Moon is the werewolf form set for the Druid. The 2 set bonus ramps up a stacking Frenzy by targeting the tethered enemy with damage. After enough stacks, the 5 set bonus replaces the 2 set multiplier with a general multiplier and gives your Werewolf skills a Dash.

With the 5-set active, targetless Skills including Lightning StormLightning Storm, Earth SpikeEarth Spike and Debilitating RoarDebilitating Roar become teleports rather than requiring a target to dash to, like Shred or Claw.

With Lightning Storm, this means you clickcast Lightning Storm to teleport to the targeted location at your cursor, enabling one of the fastest Druid mobility options we have ever had. Enjoy!

Mercenaries

Mercenaries are followers who aid the Player. A main mercenary is chosen to fight alongside you, granting strong buffs or perks, and a secondary Mercenary is chosen to periodically Reinforce you.

The following Mercenary options are recommended for the Lightning Storm Druid:

Main Mercenary – Raheir, the Shieldbearer

Reinforcement – Varyana, the Crone Berserker

Raheir will provide a small defensive boost and help tank for you. Other options are also valid, such as using Subo for minimap tracking quality of life.

Build Mechanics

Rotation and Playstyle

  1. Activate your HurricaneHurricane.
  2. Upkeep your Debilitating RoarDebilitating Roar for bonuses.
  3. Channel and hold or Clickcast your Lightning StormLightning Storm to slay your foes. Prioritize enemies with the Talisman 2 set Red Wolf Moon Tether to build Frenzy into Feral Rage.

WolvesWolves and RavensRavens are there for their supporting buffs, and for NaguNagu, and are not actively used.

Skills, Support and Synergies

The Lightning Storm Druid is a simple build to execute. Lightning StormLightning Storm is our Core Skill and main ability. It is a Channeled Skill. While channeled:

  • The storm grows, covering a larger area as the ability is held. This size is preserved for 4 seconds between channels. As the storm grows, the Lightning Strikes can become less accurate.
  • With the OmniboltOmnibolt variation, you focus your Strikes into one spot, which, after growing, pulses outward.
  • Lightning Storm scales with Attack Speed modifiers even while held Channeled. However, the rate of Cast is still limited to a set interval. Any Attack or Cast Speed past that interval causes the Lightning Storm to instead double cast.

All Variations for Lightning StormLightning Storm are usable.

  • SupercellSupercell is ideal for high-density farm content, including Helltides.
  • OmniboltOmnibolt is the best bossing and push option for directed top-end damage, focusing all lightning strikes into one superbolt.
  • Hero of the StormHero of the Storm is somewhat problematic. While it is great for brain off, run around farming in lower farm content, it will not benefit from Aspect of ChannelingAspect of Channeling. As well, the 5-set Talisman Dash will not be as usable with this Variation, because toggling your Lightning Storm on and off defeats the purpose of having a lazy toggle. Instead, you will have to slot another targeted Skill like Earth SpikeEarth Spike (with Werewolf Form node) and use that as your dash Skill. This has the potential to be the fastest farm variation, depending.

Supporting Skills

Cyclone ArmorCyclone Armor is largely just used for the passive boost to All Resistance, but the active knockback can be handy.

HurricaneHurricane with the Derecho variation becomes a toggled skill, always active. It places Weaken on targets and helps with total damage events to trigger essential Lucky Hits like Spirit Boons or Constricting TendrilsConstricting Tendrils. This can be pricy upkeep before getting paragon like Lust for CarnageLust for Carnage or Ring of Starless SkiesRing of Starless Skies; if you cannot maintain it, use another Skill in the meantime, or another variation of Hurricane. It is less uptime but removes the Cost.

RavensRavens and WolvesWolves are there for their supporting buffs. When WolvesWolves critically strike, we gain 40% Attack Speed. RavensRavens provide stacks of Resolve. Together, they are the 5 Summons necessary to max out Offering gain from NaguNagu. Companion Skills are Versatile, and keep the previous form when Cast, so will not break Werewolf Form.

Debilitating RoarDebilitating Roar provides extra Maximum Life and places a reduced damage dealt debuff on enemies. We use Dark Howl Unique Item to use this skill while still maintaining Werewolf form for our Talisman Set.

With QueQue, we gain access to Earthen BulwarkEarthen Bulwark without placing it on the Skill Bar. Earthen Bulwark provides Fortify, periodic Unstoppable, Barrier, and Resolve.

With YomYom, we gain access to Ultimate Skill PetrifyPetrify even without placing it on the Skill Bar. Petrify Stuns enemies and heavily Staggers Bosses, grants Resolve past the usual Resolve cap, and applies a heavy Critical Strike Damage Taken debuff. We do not hardcast Petrify as that would break Werewolf form, and remove our Talisman Set buffs.

When choosing the Form option for Petrify, Human Form provides an extra 5% Critical Strike Damage Taken. However, if you have extra ranks in Werebear or Shapeshifting Skills from Charms or gear affixes, Werebear form may provide better Critical Strike Damage depending on your setup.

Other Options

There is potential to use Grizzly RageGrizzly Rage with Avatar of NatureAvatar of Nature as the variation. This is a little tough to compare because it requires investments like extra spirit boons, FlickerstepFlickerstep, Ifeh's Dire TotemIfeh’s Dire Totem, splitting your 2-hander into 1-hander and totem, or using Avatar as a Werebear, which breaks your Talisman Set, and you would have to use the Storm Shepherd’s Call set instead, which is categorically worse. Feel free to try it out, though.

Another potential play is Lightning Storm as a Human. This is good Spirit Generation and friendly for leveling. However, the Storm Shepherd’s Call set is a little worse and slower, though fun with the OmniboltOmnibolt variation; the triple cast increases the radius of the damage pulse tremendously.

In early gearing and leveling, before getting access to strong Spirit generation, use Earth SpikeEarth Spike as your Basic Builder. It is a handy targeted ranged skill that can be used in Werewolf Form. Take the Spirit and Overpower side upgrades, the Werewolf Form node, and the Megalith Stone variation.

Spirit Management

We have several sources of Spirit Cost Reduction and Spirit Generation, making Spirit not a difficult issue to manage for this build.

  • Gift of the Stag Spirit Boon gives 5 Spirit Per Second.
  • Dirge of Airidah gives Spirit on Storm Skill Cast.
  • Lust for CarnageLust for Carnage gives Critical Strike Chance on cast.
  • Ring of Starless SkiesRing of Starless Skies gives significant Cost Reduction.
  • Dirge of AiridahDirge of Airidah grants Spirit on Storm Skill cast.
  • Ring Tempers for Resource Generation.

If this is not sufficient for uptime or while still gearing, we can optionally use one or more of the following:

  • Do not elect to use HurricaneHurricane until Spirit is managed.
  • Gear extra Resource Cost Reduction, Resource Generation, or Spirit Generation on gear, as available.
  • Use Energize Spirit Boon over Calamity.
  • Use the Spirit Side Upgrade for Petrify.
  • Use the Talisman 2-set Storm Shepherd’s Call.
  • Use Blood HowlBlood Howl – Healing – Spirit HowlSpirit Howl. This can be automated with greater frequency with Malefic CrescentMalefic Crescent.
  • Use ClawClaw – Spirit – Cast Speed – DashDash , replacing HurricaneHurricane.
