Build Requirements
The following Unique Items and Legendary Aspects are required for the Lightning Storm Druid to function well:
- Tempest Roar is a significant source of Spirit and allows Lightning Storm to function as a Werewolf Skill, which allows interaction with several Werewolf abilities such as Lust for Carnage and Toxic Claws.
This build does not require, but recommends the following Unique Items and Legendary Aspects:
- Unsung Ascetic’s Wraps gives Lightning Storm additional strikes and double-strikes on Critical Strikes.
- Tibault’s Will in combination with Earthen Bulwark and Aspect of Metamorphosis will be a significant source of Unstoppable, help with Resource issues, and give a large damage multiplier.
- if acquired, Uber Unique Ring of Starless Skies is a significant damage multiplier and source of Spirit Cost Reduction.
Season of the Construct
Season 3 patch updates
The introduction of Unsung Ascetic’s Wraps allows the Lightning Storm Druid to have competitive damage to other Endgame builds. On top of that, there have been a number of excellent quality of life and functional increases, including Ring of Starless Skies now working properly for Channeled Skills.
The following list details the changes in the Season 3 Patch Updates that are specific to the Lightning Storm Druid. For general Season 3 information, check out our Season 3 Hub.
Items and Gear
New – Unsung Ascetic’s Wraps – Lightning Storm gains 1 additional strike each time it grows. Lightning Storm Critical Strikes cause lightning to strike twice, dealing 10–20% increased damage.
New – Aspect of Metamorphosis:

- Evade’s cooldown is increased by 5-10 seconds.
- New Effect: Spending resources reduces your resource costs and increases your damage by x10% for 3 seconds, up to 40%.
- Now shows a buff on the bar while active.
- Fixed an issue where the Ring of Starless Skies wouldn’t grant stacks when casting channeled skills.
Aspect of Retaliation – Bonus damage reduced from 20–40% to 20–30%.
Skills

Seneschal Construct
The seasonal theme adds a Seneschal Construct companion to aid your character throughout their adventures in Sanctuary. The Construct’s playstyle and support is modified by Governing Stones that grant the construct abilities, with up to three Tuning Stones per Governing Stone to supplement that ability. Stones can be obtained through Vaults, Arcane Tremors, Journey rewards, or crafting.
The Uber Unique Seneschal Tuning Stones Evernight and Genesis are powerful Tuning Stones that drop from the new boss, Malphas. If obtained, they replace non-uber options.
- Evernight: The supported Skill grants you +4 to all Skills when used for 2.0s.
- Genesis: Increase the effectiveness of the supported Skill by 150%
For the Lightning Storm Druid, use Flash of Adrenaline for a strong personal damage buff, and a Ranged Governing Stone for strong Damage Reduction and Spirit Generation.

Spirit Boons – The Druid Class Specialization
Druids unlock powerful Spirit Boon passives, giving offerings to the animal spirits to receive their Blessing. Once fully unlocked, activate the final Boon by Spirit Bonding with one of the four animal spirits to take two passives from that row.

- In hard hitting push content, change the Eagle’s Scythe Talons to the Eagle’s Iron Feather.
Paragon
The Paragon Board is a progression system unlocked at Level 50, giving player power through Common stat Nodes, Magic affix Nodes, Rare leveled Glyphs, and Legendary board-exclusive Nodes. Below you will find the preferred Glyphs, Boards, and pathing recommended for making the most of the Lightning Storm Druid. All Glyphs are placed as if they are max radius (Level 15+).
While leveling and gearing, prioritize the Spirit Generation Magic and Rare nodes from Ancestral Guidance and the Lust for Carnage Legendary Node.

Legendary Aspects and Gearing Affixes
Below are the recommended Legendary Aspects and Gear Affixes for each gear slot. Gear Affixes in Bold are the ideal Affixes, but alternatives are added.
Slot | Aspect | Stats |
---|---|---|
2 Handed Axe | Shepherd’s Aspect | Willpower All Stats Damage to Close Enemies Damage to Distant Enemies Core Skill Damage |
Helm | Tempest Roar | Unique Item Required |
Chest | Juggernaut’s Aspect OR Mad Wolf’s Glee | Max Life Damage Reduction from Poisoned Enemies Damage Reduction from Close Enemies Damage Reduction while Fortified Total Armor |
Gloves | Unsung Ascetic’s Wraps | Ranks in Lightning Storm Lucky Hit Chance Critical Strike Chance Willpower |
Pants | Tibault’s Will | Damage Reduction from Poisoned Enemies Damage Reduction from Close enemies Damage Reduction while Injured Total Armor Max Life |
Boots | Aspect of Metamophosis OR Ghostwalker Aspect | Inherent – Attacks Reduce Evade’s Cooldown by X Seconds Movement Speed Total Armor while in Werewolf Form Spirit Cost Reduction All Stats Willpower |
Amulet | Aspect of Retaliation | Movement Speed Ranks in Envenom Total Armor in Werewolf Form Damage Reduction from Poisoned Enemies Damage Reduction while Fortified Total Armor |
Ring 1 | Aspect of the Stampede | Critical Strike Chance Max Life Damage to Close Enemies Damage to Distant Enemies Lucky Hit Chance |
Ring 2 | Ring of Starless Skies OR Aspect of the Umbral | Critical Strike Chance Max Life Damage to Close Enemies Damage to Distant Enemies Lucky Hit Chance |
- Damage to Close Enemies and Damage to Distant Enemies is for the Thunderstruck node multiplier.
- Mad Wolf’s Glee is an offensive choice that gives up several layers of potential Damage Reductions and Defensive Aspect on a non-Unique chest.
- The Boot Inherent – Attacks Reduce Evade’s Cooldown by X Seconds is for Aspect of Metamorphosis availability.
A note on Armor: Armor is capped at 85% Damage Reduction, scaled against enemy level. For example, The Armor Cap against a Tier 100 Level 154 enemy would be 13.3k, but a Tier 70 requires only around 11k. This cap can be reached with this build in a couple ways:
- A combination of four maxed Total Armor or Total Armor while in Werewolf Gear Affixes, without Juggernaut’s Aspect.
- A maxed Juggernaut’s Aspect and one other Total Armor while in Werewolf Gear Affix.
Once at that cap, there is no need to get further Armor Gear Affixes on gear!
Check our Legendary Aspect and Codex of Power Guide for more information on Legendary Affix types and powers.
Unique Items
The following Unique Items are recommended for the Lightning Storm Druid.
- Tempest Roar is required for the build to function, making Lightning Storm a Werewolf Skill. This allows Lightning Storm to benefit from Skill passives such as Toxic Claws and paragon nodes like Lust for Carnage.
- Tibault’s Will is a heavy multiplier and source of Spirit. Unstoppable is activated from Evades with Aspect of Metamorphosis and casts of Enhanced Earthen Bulwark.
- Unsung Ascetic’s Wraps gives extra Lightning Strikes and double-strikes on Critical Strike.
- If acquired, the Uber Unique Ring of Starless Skies gives a strong damage multiplier and offers strong Spirit Cost Reduction, making the build easier to play. Defensively it gives up a little compared to a non-unique ring because it has no Max Life. Replaces Aspect of the Umbral.
Tempest Roar, Tibault’s Will and Ring of Starless Skies can all be target-farmed from Duriel. Unsung Ascetic’s Wraps can be target-farmed from The Beast in the Ice.
The following Unique Items are situational additions to the build.
- Mad Wolf’s Glee is an excellent offensive Unique Item, giving movement speed and Skill Ranks to Werewolf Skills. However, this is not strong defensively, and a non-unique chest with Damage Reductions, Armor or Max Life along with a Defensive Aspect can be the better choice in late Endgame Content. If used, replaces Juggernaut’s Aspect.
Mechanics and Playstyle
The Lightning Storm Druid has simple execution as a build, but a lot of mechanics are coming together to make it work.
Lightning Storm is our Core Skill and main ability. It is a Channeled Skill. While channeled:
- The storm grows, covering a larger area as the ability is held. This size is preserved for 6 seconds between channels. As the storm grows, the Lightning Bolts can grow more inaccurate.
- Unsung Ascetic’s Wraps adds strikes and double-strikes on Critical Strike.
- Channeled abilities cannot Overpower.
Earthen Bulwark provides Fortify, Unstoppable, Damage Reduction from Vigilance and damage multiplier from triggering Tibault’s Will. It also puts us in Human Form. This allows us to then shapeshift back to Werewolf for shapeshifting bonuses including Quickshift and Heightened Senses.
Companion Active Skills are largely unused. They will passively give strong multiplier to Lightning Storm from Shepherd’s Aspect. Ravens can be preplaced on a boss when Bossing for the Critical Strike Chance.
Petrify is our Ultimate Skill. It stuns in a large area and applies a Critical Strike multiplier to enemies. Use against bosses, elites, and to remove disruptive enemy affixes like Suppressor.
Our Key Passive is Lupine Ferocity. This plays well with Critical Strike based abilities including the double strike of Unsung Ascetic’s Wraps, Toxic Claws and Lust for Carnage.
Channeled or Tapped
Lightning Storm as a channeled ability can either be held, naturally pulsing out its cast, or repeatedly tapped to cast the ability. There’s benefits to doing either.
When held, passives such as Quickshift are applied to the entire channel. However, Channeled abilities do not benefit from Improved Attack Speed modifiers, where the frequency in which the ability can be tapped can be improved from Attack Speed.
This Lightning Storm Druid has been set up to prefer holding to channel Lightning Storm, both for ease of play and for more access to strong multipliers like Quickshift. This also makes Critical Strike the preferred stat from Elixirs over Attack Speed. Critical Strikes play well with several other abilities within the build like Toxic Claws, Lust for Carnage and Unsung Ascetic’s Wraps.
Spirit Generation
The Lightning Storm Druid does not use a Basic Attack Spirit generator; instead, it relies on several alternative sources for Spirit Generation and Spirit Cost Reduction:
- Tempest Roar gives a Lucky Hit chance to Storm Skills like Lightning Storm to grant Spirit.
- Lust for Carnage legendary Node grants Spirit on Critical Strikes with Werewolf abilities, including Lightning Storm.
- Paragon nodes for Spirit on Kill in the Ancestral Guidance board.
- Tibault’s Will, with Unstoppable sources Aspect of Metamorphosis Trample and Enhanced Earthen Bulwark.
- Seasonal: The Resource Support Tuning Stone on the Seneschal Construct.
In the Endgame, these are sufficient sources for Spirit Cost needs. However, if the above are insufficient sources while leveling and gearing, consider using one or more of the following supplementary options:
- The Wolf’s Energize Spirit Boon, replacing The Raven’s Scythe Talons
- Spirit Generation on Rings, or Spirit Cost Reduction on Boots.
- Lucky Hit Chance on Rings.
- Take points from the Thunderstruck board to take the Inner Beast Paragon Node.
- Use Starlight Aspect, replacing Aspect of the Stampede.
- Use Key Passive Perfect Storm over Lupine Ferocity.
- Worst case, in very early leveling and gearing use Wind Shear as a Basic Skill builder.
Damage Rotation
- Pre-place Ravens against Bosses for Critical Strike Chance.
- Maintain Spirit and damage multiplier from Tibault’s Will with Earthen Bulwark or Aspect of Metamorphosis.
- Pre-shift to human with Earthen Bulwark for multipliers like Quickshift.
- Use Petrify to Stun and apply Critical Strike Damage bonuses to Bosses and Elites
- Cast, Channel and hold your Lightning Storm to slay your foes.
Variant Play-styles
Grizzly Rage Werewolf
Really miss that Dire Werewolf lifestyle? While out of fashion, the Grizzly Rage Lightning Storm Werewolf still has a number of benefits including:
- Ease in farming content such as Helltides or other overworld activities. including the speed from Dire Wolf’s Aspect.
- Much less worry about Spirit Generation resourcing.
The downside to playing these is losing several damage multipliers like Aspect of Retaliation and Petrify‘s Critical Strike Damage, trading these to have access to Grizzly Rage. Simply put, it will fall behind in the highest content.
To play this setup, make the following changes:
- Remove skill points in Earthen Bulwark, Enhanced Earthen Bulwark, Preserving Earthen Bulwark, 3 ranks in Vigilance, Petrify, Prime Petrify, and 1 rank in Natural Fortitude.
- Take Skill Points in Grizzly Rage, Prime Grizzly Rage, Supreme Grizzly Rage, Hurricane, Enhanced Hurricane, Savage Hurricane, and Endless Tempest rank 3.
- Replace Aspect of Retaliation with Dire Wolf’s Aspect.
- Replace Aspect of the Umbral or Ring of Starless Skies withAspect of the Rampaging Werebeast.
- Replace the Wolf’s Bolster with the Wolf’s Calamity.
Gauntlet Optimization
The Gauntlet is a Trial event dungeon that changes weekly. The format is a point score system over 8 minutes, and players will compete in weekly Leaderboards for fame and prize.
The enemies are level 124, which is the equivalent to Tier 70 nightmare dungeons. Compared to a Tier 100 Nightmare dungeon, the enemies will hurt less, but speed counts even more!
Lightning Storm Druid has the speed, AoE, and Boss damage required to compete well in the Gauntlet.
The Gauntlet playstyle for the Lightning Storm Druid makes a few changes but plays and functions similarly. The build will drop some Damage Reductions and top-end multipliers, and instead tune for speed, damage events, and efficiency. The following recommendations are for generic Gauntlet play, and considerations may change week to week as new maps are shown.
Gearing and Legendary Affixes for Gauntlet
For the Gauntlet setup, we invest in some damage proc Aspects that are lethal against these lower leveled enemies, and go for a 1-Handed and Totem setup. Make the following changes:
- On the totem, get Critical Strike Chance, Cooldown reduction, and Damage Reductions.
- Move Shepherd’s Aspect to Amulet, replacing Aspect of Retaliation.
- Use Lightning Dancer’s Aspect and Runeworker’s Conduit Aspect on 1-Handed Axe and Totem.
Gauntlet Skills
- Remove Skill Points in Vigilance and Heightened Senses.
- Place Skill Points in Charged Atmosphere rank 1, Electric Shock rank 2, Bad Omen rank 3.
Gauntlet Paragon Board
Replace Territorial with Electrocution. Electrocution’s effects are also triggered from Bad Omen and Lightning Dancer’s Aspect.
Gems
See below for the best Gems to socket into your gear for each category.
- Weapon: Royal Emerald
- Armor: Royal Ruby
- Jewelry: 1 Royal Amethyst, 1 Royal Ruby and 1 Royal Sapphire to max out elemental Resistance. Tempest Roar provides Poison Resistance and Lightning Resistance is covered by Paragon Rare node Lightning Resilience.
Elixirs, Incense and Health Potions
The Alchemist offers helpful consumables at the cost of foraged materials found throughout Sanctuary.
- Craft the highest Elixir of Cruelty or Heady Precision Elixir available for Critical Strike Chance bonuses.
- If mats are available, craft Chorus of War.
- Upgrade your potion as you level, increasing the instant healing of the potion.
