Ever since the Anaheim FanFest back in April, fans have been speculating what new jobs Evercold will bring. Looking for clues, some fans spent three months focused on Yoshi-P’s Anaheim shirt starring Rhitahtyn sas Arvina, wondering if the next job would revolve around gun-shields. Those players have been proven correct, as Bastion blazed into the Berlin keynote with a trailer full of firepower. Here’s what we know about the job:
Unlock Requirement, Playstyle, and Lore
As the Rhitahtyn shirt implies, Bastion’s weapon is a pair of imposing twin gun-shields known as the Skyltborg. The design blends together fantasy and technological design elements in a way familiar to most FF fans. The job will be the second of XIV’s main tanks (Paladin being the other) and only playable in Evolved Mode. As mentioned in the Anaheim FanFest, main tanks are built around taking and countering enemy damage, while off tanks focus on overall damage reduction. Bastion will start at level 90, with the associated job quests obtainable in Limsa Lominsa.

Bastion’s background originates from the islands of Aerslaent in the Northern Empty (the region Old Sharlayan is in). The Skyltborg and its martial tradition was developed by the rulers of the archipelago over generations to defend their homeland. The shields themselves are highly capable, allowing for both quick melee combos and explosive ranged attacks. Not only that, but Bastion can offer allies both defensive and curative spells.

While we didn’t see too much of the defensive aspects of Bastion, we saw plenty of the offensive. During the trailer demonstrating the job, the Bastion player switched from melee combos to buffing their shields and following up with a series of ranged attacks. It looks like the job may have a ranged combo unlocked by fulfilling certain conditions. Another ranged attack had the player fired their Skyltborg into the ground, with attacks detonating under the enemy’s feet. And as a finale, the Bastion charged up their shields to perform one more, bigger ranged attack that took out the enemy.
The time spent on Bastion during the keynote was brief, only six minutes. But already players are getting excited about the job. Hopefully we’ll get an extended look at Bastion’s job actions and rotation by the time we get to Tokyo FanFest.
