With Zenless Zone Zero (ZZZ) Version 3.1 just around the corner, HoYoverse has released Remielle Dan’s official character demo, and it might be one of the studio’s most impressive cinematic trailers yet.
Rather than simply showing off Remielle’s combat kit, the nearly five-minute short plays out like a miniature animated film, seamlessly blending 3D action with beautifully stylized 2D animations. More importantly, it appears to reveal some major story details surrounding Sunbringer and Remielle herself through two separate encounters that seem to take place years apart.
Two Duels, Two Different Timelines
The trailer opens in what appears to be the present, with Remielle breaching Sunbringer’s sanctum before almost immediately attempting to assassinate her with nothing more than a knife. The atmosphere is tense from the very beginning, and it’s clear these two aren’t exactly on friendly terms. What’s particularly interesting is what isn’t there.
Remielle never uses her signature Void Hunter weapon during this confrontation. Considering she only reclaimed it during the events leading into Version 3.0, this strongly suggests the opening sequence actually takes place before those events, when she was still separated from her weapon, reclaimed specifically toward the end of 2.8
The trailer then shifts into a second duel, this time set even further in the past, and the tone couldn’t be more different. Instead of an assassination attempt, the two engage in what feels more like a ceremonial trial between rivals. Remielle is now wielding her Void Hunter weapon, allowing the battle to become a spectacular back-and-forth exchange that dominates most of the trailer.
The action constantly flows between gorgeous 3D cinematics and slick 2D animation, making it one of the most visually ambitious character demos HoYoverse has released since Yixuan’s back in 2.0. The fight also appears to hint at something much bigger. Rather than simply sparring, this duel is heavily implied to be Remielle’s Void Hunter trial, the battle where she earned the title in the first place.
Something Is Wrong With Sunbringer
As incredible as the action is, the dialogue may be even more important. Throughout the trailer, Remielle repeatedly hints that something about Sunbringer isn’t right. She speaks as though the person standing before her isn’t the same Sunbringer she once knew, suggesting that the legendary founder is unaware of something she absolutely should remember. Looking at her in the trailer, she certainly doesn’t appear to be fully present.
HoYoverse never explains exactly what Remielle is referring to, but it’s one of the biggest lore teases in the entire trailer. Whether Sunbringer has changed, forgotten something, or isn’t entirely who she appears to be, remains a mystery.
By the end of the trailer, the story returns to the present. Remielle abandons the confrontation altogether, disappearing in a swirl of glowing feathers after seemingly realizing there’s no point continuing the fight. She leaves visibly disappointed, while Sunbringer is left standing alone with far more questions than answers.
If the Version 3.x story delivers on what this trailer is teasing, Remielle’s character demo may have set up one of the biggest lore mysteries ZZZ has seen since the introduction of the Void Hunters. It’s a stunning cinematic on its own, but for story fans, it might also be essential viewing before Version 3.1 arrives.
