Build Introduction

Unleash the CataclysmCataclysm to drive your enemies before a storm of Lightning Bolts and Twisters! This is an Ultimate Skill build using the Druid’s CataclysmCataclysm.

This build is best as a Torment 4, Infernal Horde, Helltide, and other world content farming build. While not the highest Pit pusher, it excels as a low-action, lazy farmer that screenkills with little effort. This build is set up to make farming as convenient as possible and minimize worry about buffs or snapshotting!

Strengths and Weaknesses

Strengths
  • Large Area clearing
  • Best world content farmer
Weaknesses
  • Not the highest Pit pusher

You will also need Ultimate Efficiency —  DruidUltimate Efficiency —  Druid Temper Manual for Cataclysm Cooldown Reduction.

For smoothness of play, you will need enough CataclysmCataclysm duration and cooldown reduction to keep Cataclysm running. This means:

There’s more info on this in the Cataclysm Cooldown Management section, including extra options.

Druid Class Mechanic – Spirit Boons

Druids unlock powerful Spirit Boon passives, giving offerings to the animal spirits to receive their Blessing. Once fully unlocked, activate the final Boon by Spirit Bonding with one of the four animal spirits to take two passives from that row.

Boon NameAnimalEffect

Avian WrathEagleGain 40% Critical Strike Damage.
CalamityWolfExtend the duration of Ultimate Skills by 35%.
OverloadSnakeDealing Storm damage also applies an additional 20% Poisoning damage over 5 seconds. Lucky Hit: Dealing Poison damage has up to a 35% chance to summon a Lightning Bolt on the target dealing 120% damage.

Strong Cataclysm cooldown reduction and duration is essential for the build. Check the Cataclysm Cooldown Management for more info.

Gear, Stats, Gems, and Runes

Check these sections for all important Cataclysm gearing considerations to improve the power of your character in the endgame.

Legendary Aspects

Gear slots with multiple options are listed in recommended priority. Any slot with a non-required Mythic Unique or Unique Item will include a valid alternative legendary power to use while still leveling and gearing. Combine these with the right stat priorities.

SlotAspectUnique/Legendary Aspect Power
2 Handed MaceAspect of the Rabid BearAspect of the Rabid BearDeal 40-80% more Poison Damage. While Shapeshifted, your direct damage is converted into Poison damage.

Critical Strikes with Storm Skills cause Lightning Bolts to periodically strike close enemies for 3 seconds, each dealing Lightning damage. Your Lightning Bolts deal 25-40% increased damage.
PantsAspect of Cyclonic ForceAspect of Cyclonic ForceCyclone Armor also provides Physical Damage Reduction. In addition, Cyclone Armor will also be applied to all Nearby Allies.
BootsKhamsin SteppewalkersDamaging 200-100 Enemies with Storm Skills grants a charge. Casting any Defensive Skill will grant Max Movement Speed and Unhindered for 1 second for each charge used. While charged, enemies you run into are Immobilized for 1 second.

Aspect of Electrified ClawsAspect of Electrified Claws
Casting an Ultimate Skill increases your Ultimate damage by 6-10%, up to 60-100%. At 10 stacks, your Cooldowns and this bonus are reset.
Ring 1Airidah's Inexorable WillAiridah’s Inexorable WillWhen casting an Ultimate Skill and again 5 seconds after, you Pull in Distant enemies and deal Physical damage to them. This damage is increased by 10% per 1 point of Willpower you have.
Ring 2Mjölnic RyngMjölnic RyngWhile Cataclysm is active, you gain unlimited Spirit and deal  20-40% increased damage.

Cataclysm receives your Lightning Bolt benefits.

Insatiable FuryInsatiable Fury maintains Werebear form, which lets ProvocationProvocation ramp by itself without having to think about maintaining form or watching for the buff, so perfect for farming.

Aspect of Electrified ClawsAspect of Electrified Claws will be better average total damage, but the stun may be disruptive in push, making enemies not group for lightning bolt splash. It is also a good way to trigger Bad OmenBad Omen. Aspect of Apogeic FurorAspect of Apogeic Furor can be better in a push where you are reaching the boss at high stacks.

Vehement Brawler's AspectVehement Brawler’s Aspect can give needed Skill Ranks for Cooldown Reduction if necessary, but is a worse multiplier.

Use a 2-Handed Mace for Overpower Damage.

Uniques and Mythic Uniques

The following Unique Items are recommended for the Cataclysm Druid:

  • Insatiable FuryInsatiable Fury – This chest is usable as a convenience item, with useful gear affixes and keeping you in Werebear form, which is useful to not have to watch for ProvocationProvocation. Otherwise, you will have to periodically MaulMaul to maintain Werebear form.
  • Mjölnic RyngMjölnic Ryng gives a significant damage buff during Cataclysm; Cataclysm receives your Lightning Bolt benefits. This means all Lightning Bolt modifiers for damage, utility, and other effects. The ranks in Endless TempestEndless Tempest will be significant for Cataclysm and Hurricane uptime.
  • Airidah's Inexorable WillAiridah’s Inexorable Will has two important parts: it clusters enemies together and gives significant cooldown reduction on Ultimate Skills.
  • Khassim Steppewalkers offer strong gear affixes, including Nature Magic Cooldown and Endless TempestEndless Tempest ranks for maintaining Cataclysm.

Check our Unique Item Target-farming guide for information on where to find everything you need.

Mythic Unique Items

These Mythic Unique items are recommended for the build:

  • Pit Push – Shroud of False DeathShroud of False Death gives +1 to all Passives. This is a lot of damage multipliers, quality of life, and other benefits, and is generally strong to use. However, by replacing Insatiable FuryInsatiable Fury, you will have to use MaulMaul to maintain Werebear form for ProvocationProvocation to stack up.

Check our Unique Item Target-farming guide for information on where to find everything you need.

Gems and Runewords

Use these recommended Gem and Runeword setups for the Cataclysm Druid:

Gems

Weapon GemsArmor GemsJewelry Gems
Grand RubyGrand Ruby for Overpower DamageGrand SapphireGrand Sapphire for WillpowerGrand SkullGrand Skull to Armor cap and then
Grand DiamondGrand Diamond for All Resistances

Runewords

Use these Runeword combinations for the Cataclysm Druid, placed in 2-Handed Weapon and Armor slots:

Runeword CombinationRuneword Effects
Nagu ZecNaguNagu – Gain: 100 Offering. Maintain at least 1 active Summon for 5 seconds, gaining Offering for each up to 6 Summon.
ZecZec – Requires: 100 Offering. (Overflow: Further Reduced Cooldown). Cooldown: 1 seconds. Reduce your active Ultimate Cooldown by 1 second.
Bac JahBacBac – Gives 50 Offering. Travel 5 Meters.
JahJah – Requires: 250 Offering. Overflow: Store Excess Offering. Cooldown: 2 seconds. Replace your next Evade with the Sorcerer’s Teleport Skill, blinking further, dealing damage, and becoming Unstoppable.

Runewords use a conditional Rune of Ritual to generate Offering. The Offering is consumed by the Rune of Invocation to trigger its effect. Runes replace Gems in gear with two sockets. Up to two sets of Runeword Pairs can be placed at a time.

This setup is with farming in mind. JahJah is periodic teleports, and ZecZec helps manage Cataclysm Cooldown.

Other options can include:

  • Offense – If you have sufficient cooldown management for your Cataclysm without ZecZec, other runes such as GarGar for Critical Strike Chance can be used.

Paragon Board

The following are the preferred Glyphs, Boards, and pathing recommended for making the most of the Cataclysm Druid.

The road to max Paragon is long. The above Paragon tabs show the following:

  • The BASE SETUP tab spends 50 fewer points than the max 328 points, taking a stricter pathing to take almost all Legendary, Rare, and Magic Nodes, and activates all Glyph Nodes with their secondary effects.
  • The FULL SETUP tab completes the Paragon Board in its final form, filling in the rest of the board to get the rest of the Magic and Rare Nodes and filling out Glyph additives.

Glyphs have two significant breakpoint increases. At Level 15, the glyph grows in radius and gains a special effect. At Level 46, the glyph grows to max radius and gains a strong conditional damage multiplier.

Glyphs are placed as if they are at least Level 15+ in radius. Total Boards placed are now limited to a max of 5; the Starter Board and four Class Boards. Rotate boards as necessary.

Season 11 Mechanics

Divine Gifts

Earn Corrupted Essences by defeating the Lesser Evils in their associated content. These Essences can be transformed into Divine Gifts by Hadriel. Divine Gifts have three aspects.

  1. Increased reward in the associated content
  2. A purified effect
  3. A corrupted effect

Slotting an Essence into the Purified slot grants double drop rewards and a boon, while slotting an Essence into the Corrupted slot grants normal drop rewards and a curse. Upgrade these gifts by engaging with their content. Leveling these Gifts increases the drop rewards while the boon and curse stay the same.

Here is a general setup for Divine Gifts.

Helltides – Duriel

  • Purified: Essence of Pain – Briefly gain maximum Barrier after becoming Injured, every 20 seconds.
  • Corrupted: Essence of Squallor

World Bosses – Azmodan

  • Purified: Essence of Sin – Gain 20% increased Armor.
  • Corrupted: Essence of Hellfire

Kurast Undercity – Andariel

  • Purified: Essence of Anguish – Gain 30% Movement Speed.
  • Corrupted: Essence of Screams
  • Note: If you are already move speed capped or need extra defense, swap the Andariel Gifts for a 20% Resistance boost to defense.

Belial – The Pit

  • Purified: Essence of Lies – Fortify for 1% of your Maximum Life a second.
  • Corrupted: Essence of Shadows

These Gifts can be freely swapped based on desired rewards. For example, swap the Belial Gifts to earn more gold while in the Pit.

Sanctification

Hadriel offers a final gamble to empower items. Use the Heavenly Forge to Sanctify the item, imbuing the item with heavenly power.

Sanctifying is the final change for an item. After Sanctifying the item, it cannot be upgraded, masterworked, tempered, or otherwise altered, including its Aspect. Runes and Gems can still be swapped.

Options that can happen include:

  • Apply a bonus Legendary power
  • Improve an Affix into a Greater Affix
  • Add a bonus Affix from a pool of special Sanctification affixes
  • Replace an existing Affix with a random Sanctification affix
  • Add a random amount (5-25) of bonus Quality

Some of the jackpot desirable sanctifications include +Ranks to All Skills, useful Affixes like Critical Strike Chance or Attack Speed, or Offensive Generic Legendary Aspects. The potential Quality Increases will be especially strong on a weapon, increasing its DPS. Other options can ruin your item, such as replacing a necessary existing affix.

Mercenaries

Once unlocked, Mercenaries are followers that aid the Player in combat. A main mercenary is chosen to fight alongside you, granting strong buffs or perks, and a secondary Mercenary is chosen to periodically Reinforce you under a chosen Opportunity condition.

Main Mercenary – Subo, the Drunken Archer

Reinforcement – Raheir, the Shieldbearer

  • Reinforcement Ability – CraterCrater
  • Opportunity – MaulMaul

Subo’s Opening FireOpening Fire Critical Strike Damage debuff is a strong damage gain. The minimap target tracking is high-quality of life on top. Other Mercenaries are usable, such as if you need additional defenses like Armor from Raheir.

Build Mechanics

Rotation and Playstyle

Farm Rotation

  1. Earthen BulwarkEarthen Bulwark into CataclysmCataclysm. Repeat 2-3 times a minute and enjoy.

ProvocationProvocation will automatically count up to 10 thanks to Insatiable FuryInsatiable Fury; you will maintain Werebear form without having to MaulMaul or other Werebear skills. Be careful not to press other skills that might consume your ProvocationProvocation before your Cataclysm can.

Either opt to wait for the first 10 stacks, or completely do not worry about that at all, and your next Cataclysm cast will pick up the Overpower anyway.

After some decent gear, the Overpower will not even need to be active to one-shot most T4 enemies.

Autocasting CataclysmCataclysm

To make this build even simpler, you can autocast your CataclysmCataclysm in a couple of ways:

  • Assign a secondary hotkey to your Cataclysm and place your favorite paperweight on the keybind.
  • For PC, the Numlock trick from d3 still works for autocasting abilities
    • Have Numlock set to on.
    • Secondary Bind your skills to Numlock 1-4
    • Press and hold the skills you want to autocast, and turn Numlock off while still holding those skills
    • Release these keys, and the skills should autocast whenever they are off cooldown and you are out of town.
    • Tabbing away from the screen will reset this autocast, and you will need to redo the action.
  • Controllers can set Cataclysm to an L2/R2 keybind and position your controller to keep it pressed.

Push Rotation

  1. Stay in Werebear form for your 10 stacks of ProvocationProvocation. Give a small gap near max stacks so you do not accidentally spend your Provocation on anything else. When your stacks are capped:
  2. Maintain Werebear form between casts of CataclysmCataclysm for damage bonuses like Survival Instincts:

Be careful about wasting a ProvocationProvocation on casts other than CataclysmCataclysm, as you want the Overpower buff for every Cataclysm.

Companion Skills are there for NaguNagu and are not actively used. In a push build that is actively attacking, replace NaguNagu with IgniIgni. This lets you replace companion skills for options like Primal PulverizePrimal Pulverize for damage reduction or Primal ShredPrimal Shred for mobility.

Use Earthen BulwarkEarthen Bulwark as necessary for Barrier, Fortify, and Unstoppable.

Skills, Support, and Synergies

The Cataclysm Druid loads its power into its Ultimate Skill CataclysmCataclysm, stacking heavy multipliers and additives to send out Twisters and Lightning Bolts against enemies.

Cataclysm Damage

Lots of parts come together to make Cataclysm do massive damage. Here are the notable ones.

From Items:

From Paragon:

  • All used Paragon legendary nodes increase Cataclysm damage, but Ancestral Guidance is especially potent, increasing damage based on Spirit when cast. Spirit is increased from a few sources to max this power, including paragon nodes and Gift of the Stag Spirit Boon. Because of Mjölnic RyngMjölnic Ryng, we are always at full Spirit.

From other Skill Passives:

CataclysmCataclysm has a short 0.5-second lockout for the Lightning Bolts to target the same enemy or area. This will slow down bossing somewhat, but it is manageable.

Poisoned Condition for EnvenomEnvenom is applied from Overload Spirit Boon, giving all Storm Damage a 5-second Poison for 20% of damage dealt.

Key Passive

The Key Passive for this build is Ursine StrengthUrsine Strength:

  • Gain 30% Maximum Life, 20% more damage, and a 100% Overpower bonus while in Werebear form and for 8 seconds after leaving it.

We maintain Werebear form with Insatiable FuryInsatiable Fury. If used, MaulMaul can force Werebear form.

Cataclysm Cooldown Management

Maintaining Cataclysm is essential for output. Having enough duration and cooldown reduction means being able to chain casts without significant downtime between casts.

We gain Cataclysm duration from:

  • Calamity Spirit Boon for 35% more Ultimate Duration.
  • Ranks in Endless TempestEndless Tempest.

To lower the cooldown on Cataclysm, we have:

  • Skill ranks in Cataclysm reduce cooldown. These are from Skill points and sources like Vehement Brawler's AspectVehement Brawler’s Aspect.
  • Ultimate Cooldown Reduction from Tempering on Jewelry.
  • ZecZec Rune gives Ultimate Cooldown Reduction every trigger.
  • Ultimate Cooldown Reduction from Airidah's Inexorable WillAiridah’s Inexorable Will. This is a good affix to target with Greater Affix, and as needed, Masterworking. After your duration and cooldown are sufficient, the masterworking can be moved onto the Willpower% Affix instead.
  • Khassim Steppewalkers for Nature Cooldown Reduction

There are a few very inefficient ways to additionally lower cooldown on Cataclysm. Try all the above before resorting to these:

  • Calm before the Storm Spirit Boon. Unfortunately, CataclysmCataclysm has a low total Lucky Hit – the tooltip’s high lucky hit is over its full duration, so misleading.
  • Other Unique Items that might have Cooldown Reduction, such as Harlequin CrestHarlequin Crest
  • Items with Skills ranks that would lower cooldown, like Mad Wolf's GleeMad Wolf’s Glee. Using this Unique would mean swapping from Insatiable FuryInsatiable Fury, so having to maintain werebear form with MaulMaul.

Snapshotting

For those who do not care about snapshots, great news. The Farm Rotation and its gear setup mitigates snaps, so you do not have to worry, think, or stress about them.\

For those interested in mechanics (and what a great section to be reading!), here’s what is going on.

Snapshotting means preparing multipliers, buffs, or other effects into the entire length of the Skill; in this case, our CataclysmCataclysm. Since Season 8, recasts before duration runs out no longer keep buffs, so these buffs need to be loaded into every Cataclysm cast. Don’t worry, it’s a lot to read but not a lot to manage in-game.

What are we snapshotting into our Cataclysm:

PowerEffectTrigger
ProvocationProvocationGuaranteed OverpowerMax ProvocationProvocation stacks from being in Werebear form
ResonanceResonanceEarth Skills empower your next Storm SkillEarthen BulwarkEarthen Bulwark before each CataclysmCataclysm
  • ProvocationProvocation guarantees Overpower; you want max stacks before each cast of Cataclysm.
  • ResonanceResonance is a strong elemental multiplier. Earthen BulwarkEarthen Bulwark is the convenient Earth Skill trigger before each storm skill Cataclysm. Casts of Bulwark will not interfere with ProvocationProvocation.

Lots of multipliers are not snapshot into the cataclysm, but are instead dynamic or conditional checks, so they only give their bonuses when those conditions are met, such as:

So how’s this play? ProvocationProvocation takes 10 stacks to guarantee an Overpower. I will:

  • Cast Werebear skills to be in Werebear form to gain Provocation stacks.
  • *Wait* without hitting Skills, and watch Provocation stacks so the passive is not accidentally spent on something that is not Cataclysm.
  • When stacks hit 10, Earthen BulwarkEarthen Bulwark into CataclysmCataclysm.
  • Repeat each Cataclysm.

At this point, you should see Blue/Orange numbers indicating Cataclysm is overpowering. Not all Lightning Bolts will be Overpowered Cataclysm Bolts, as some are coming from other sources like Runeworker's Conduit AspectRuneworker’s Conduit Aspect, Charged AtmosphereCharged Atmosphere, and Overload Spirit Boon.

Provocation

ProvocationProvocation – After 10 seconds of Werebear form, your next non-Defensive Skill will Overpower and deal increased damage.

ProvocationProvocation is how we Overpower our Cataclysm for a large damage multiplier.

At least one point in ProvocationProvocation is required. Provocation takes 10 seconds in Werebear form to be ready to trigger. With Insatiable FuryInsatiable Fury, Werebear form is automatically maintained, so counting and buff watching becomes less necessary.

Sometimes the Provocation stack buff will be pushed off the buff bar because too many other active buffs…There is no solution to this other than keeping count or waiting a bit for the buffs to reappear.

Bug: Other Duration Skills like HurricaneHurricane can eat your ProvocationProvocation or prematurely end the Overpower on your Cataclysm!

How worth is Overpowering our Cataclysm? Willpower users like Druids get thousands in additive overpower damage. This is not the giga multiplier it used to be, but it is still substantial. However, at high gear and paragon, even un-Overpowered Cataclysm can kill T4 world content, so there is a point where it is overkill.

Elixirs, Incense, and Health Potions

The Alchemist offers helpful consumables at the cost of foraged materials found throughout Sanctuary.

Season 11 Updates

Note that there are lots of sweeping changes to defensive systems, gearing, masterworking, tempering, and season journey. Don’t be afraid to take a couple of extra defensive choices over previous seasons to keep things smooth. Cataclysm should remain a solid world farmer build.

The new Khassim Steppewalkers are a nice addition for Cataclysm-based builds, and the new Bad OmenBad Omen should give a nice bump to damage.

Is the new Melted Heart of SeligMelted Heart of Selig worth using? It is a nice bump to Ancestral Guidance but should not outperform a well rolled legendary Amulet.

The following list details the important changes in the Season 11 Patch Updates that are specific to the Cataclysm Druid, as well as any Known Bugs. For general Season 11 information, check out our Season 11 Hub.

Itemization:

  • Aspect of the Rabid BearAspect of the Rabid Bear
    • Previous: While Grizzly Rage is active, your direct damage is converted into Poison damage, you deal 40-80% more Poison damage, and you passively spread Rabies.
    • Now: Deal 40-80% more Poison Damage. While Shapeshifted, your direct damage is converted into Poison damage.
  • New Item – Khassim Steppewalkers: Damaging 150-100 Enemies with Nature Magic Skills grants Max Movement Speed and Unhindered for 4-8 seconds. Enemies you run through are Immobilized for 1 second.
  • Mjölnic RyngMjölnic Ryng – Now restores 500 spirit instead of fully restoring Spirit.

Skills and Stats:

  • Preserving Earthen BulwarkPreserving Earthen Bulwark – Fortify reduced from 18% to 10% of Maximum Life.
  • Bad OmenBad Omen
    • Now also calls Lightning Bolts when applying Immobilize and Stun.
    • Ranks in this passive now increase the damage of the Lightning Bolts instead of the chance to strike enemies.
  • Defensive PostureDefensive Posture
    • Previous: Increases the amount of Fortify you gain from all sources by 5% and you gain 3% Damage Reduction while Fortified.
    • Now: Increases the amount of Fortify you gain from all sources by 5%.

Bug Fixes

  • Fixed an issue where the Movement Speed buff from Khasim Steppewalkers could be permanently granted when casting two defensive skills in a row.
  • Fixed an issue where the description for the buff from Khasim Steppewalkers displayed the wrong values.

Known Bugs:

  • Some additive lightning bolt damage sources, such as Lightning Bolt Tempers and ElectrocutionElectrocution, are not properly scaling Cataclysm damage.
    • The electrocution glyph is still taken for its working multipliers.
  • Using ProvocationProvocation on other duration Skills like HurricaneHurricane will cancel the active Overpower on CataclysmCataclysm.
