Build Introduction
Unleash the
Cataclysm to drive your enemies before a storm of Lightning Bolts and Twisters! This is an Ultimate Skill build using the Druid’s
Cataclysm.
This build is best as a Torment 4, Infernal Horde, Helltide, and other world content farming build. While not the highest Pit pusher, it excels as a low-action, lazy farmer that screenkills with little effort. This build is set up to make farming as convenient as possible and minimize worry about buffs or snapshotting!
Strengths and Weaknesses
- Large Area clearing
- Best world content farmer
- Not the highest Pit pusher
- Several Uniques required
Build Requirements
The following Unique Items are required for build functionality to get started on the Cataclysm Druid:
You will also need
Ultimate Efficiency — Druid Temper Manual for Cataclysm Cooldown Reduction.
For smoothness of play, you will need enough
Cataclysm duration and cooldown reduction to keep Cataclysm running. This means:
- Enough ranks in
Endless Tempest from sources like
Mjölnic Ryng. - Enough Cooldown Reduction on your Ultimate Skills from sources like
Airidah’s Inexorable Will.
There’s more info on this in the Cataclysm Cooldown Management section, including extra options.
Quick Navigation
This guide covers everything necessary to get started on your
Cataclysm adventure, including Skill Tree points, Paragon, Gearing, and Seasonal updates. Navigate straight to hot topics here:
Skill Bar and Skill Tree Points
Ravens and
Wolves are for
Nagu rune as an easy generator for Offering. If Nagu is swapped for a more active rune like
Igni, then these skills can be swapped to other options like
Primal Shred for mobility,
Trample for mobility, or
Debilitating Roar for another active use Defensive.
Eternal players complete Renown events in each zone for additional Skill Points, while Seasonal Players engage with the Season Journey and Rank for these Skill points.
See how these Skills play in the Rotation and Playstyle section.
Druid Class Mechanic – Spirit Boons
Druids unlock powerful Spirit Boon passives, giving offerings to the animal spirits to receive their Blessing. Once fully unlocked, activate the final Boon by Spirit Bonding with one of the four animal spirits to take two passives from that row.
| Boon Name | Animal | Effect |
|---|---|---|
| Gift of the Stag | Deer | Gain 30 Maximum Spirit. You gain 10 Spirit every second. |
| Iron Feather | Eagle | Gain 30% Maximum Life |
| Avian Wrath | Eagle | Gain 40% Critical Strike Damage. |
| Calamity | Wolf | Extend the duration of Ultimate Skills by 35%. |
| Overload | Snake | Dealing Storm damage also applies an additional 20% Poisoning damage over 5 seconds. Lucky Hit: Dealing Poison damage has up to a 35% chance to summon a Lightning Bolt on the target dealing 120% damage. |
Strong Cataclysm cooldown reduction and duration are essential for the build. Check the Cataclysm Cooldown Management for more info.
Gear, Stats, Gems, and Runes
Check these sections for all important Cataclysm gearing considerations to improve the power of your character in the endgame.
Legendary Aspects
Gear slots with multiple options are listed in recommended priority. Any slot with a non-required Mythic Unique or Unique Item will include a valid alternative legendary power to use while still leveling and gearing. Combine these with the right stat priorities.
| Slot | Aspect | Unique/Legendary Aspect Power |
|---|---|---|
| 2 Handed Mace | Aspect of the Rabid Beast | Deal 40-80% more Poison Damage. While Shapeshifted, your direct damage is converted into Poison damage. |
| Helm | Lucky Hit: Storm Skills have up to a 10-35% chance to grant 4 Spirit. Your base Storm Skills are now also Werewolf Skills | |
| Chest | Farm – Offensive – | Werebear form is now your true form, and you gain 2-5 Ranks to all Werebear Skills. |
| Gloves | Runeworker’s Conduit Aspect Aspect of Electrified Claws | Critical Strikes with Storm Skills cause Lightning Bolts to periodically strike close enemies for 3 seconds, each dealing Lightning damage. Your Lightning Bolts deal 30-50% increased damage. |
| Pants | Aspect of Cyclonic Force | Cyclone Armor also provides Physical Damage Reduction. In addition, Cyclone Armor will also be applied to all Nearby Allies. |
| Boots | Damaging 200-100 Enemies with Storm Skills grants a charge. Casting any Defensive Skill will grant Max Movement Speed and Unhindered for 1 second for each charge used. While charged, enemies you run into are Immobilized for 1 second. | |
| Amulet | Aspect of the Changeling’s Debt | You deal [25 – 65]%[x] increased damage while hitting a Poisoned enemy as a Werebear or a Crowd Controlled enemy as a Werewolf. |
| Ring 1 | Damage – Aspect of Apogeic FurorCooldown – | Casting an Ultimate Skill increases your Ultimate damage by [6.0 – 10.0]%[x], up to [60 – 100]%[x]. At 10 stacks, your Cooldowns and this bonus are reset. |
| Ring 2 | While Cataclysm is active, you gain unlimited Spirit and deal 20-40% increased damage. Cataclysm receives your Lightning Bolt benefits. |
Insatiable Fury maintains Werebear form, which lets
Provocation ramp by itself without having to think about maintaining form or watching for the buff, so perfect for farming.
Mad Wolf’s Glee with
Tempest Roar will give
Cataclysm extra ranks, reducing its cooldown and improving its damage.
Gloves’ offensive Aspect has a couple of options:
Runeworker’s Conduit Aspect is the highest multiplier and the extra bolts can be good for Lucky Hit triggers.
Aspect of Electrified Claws is a smaller multiplier but the stun can be helpful defensively and trigger
Bad Omen, but it is disruptive when trying to gather large packs in push content.
Aspect of Apogeic Furor can be higher-ramped damage over
Runeworker’s Conduit Aspect, this can be better in Pits if you reach the boss at high stacks.
Vehement Brawler’s Aspect has the worst damage, but the extra ranks can be useful for extra cooldown Reduction
Use a 2-Handed Mace for Overpower Damage.
Once well-geared, it is possible to have enough cooldown reduction to not need both
Khamsin Steppewalkers and
Airidah’s Inexorable Will. A legendary ring offers much higher potential damage and better total Affixes.

Stat Priority and Tempering Affixes
Each line of affixes is listed in order of importance, with some alternatives given. The bolded affixes are the most important targets for Greater Affixes and Masterwork Critical Increases. Check the Tempering guide and Masterworking guide for more details about these topics.
| Slot | Gearing Affixes | Tempering Affixes |
|---|---|---|
| Two-Handed Mace | Maximum Life Willpower Overpower Damage Critical Strike Damage Life on Hit | |

Temperings can be rerolled until they Greater Affix.
After gearing, look at progression systems like Paragon next.
Uniques and Mythic Uniques
The following Unique Items are recommended for the Cataclysm Druid:
Tempest Roar gives Storm spells, including
Cataclysm, the Werewolf tag, allowing them to benefit from multipliers like
Lust for Carnage.
Insatiable Fury – This chest is a convenience item, with useful defensive gear affixes. While equipped, your preferred form is Werebear, which is useful to build
Provocation.
Mad Wolf’s Glee together with
Tempest Roar gives ranks to
Cataclysm, improving its damage and cooldown reduction. You will have to periodically
Pulverize to maintain werebear form, however.
Temerity can be used over Legendary Pants for a greater total defense, but giving up a well rolled pants with high willpower is a damage loss.
-
Mjölnic Ryng gives a significant damage buff during Cataclysm; Cataclysm receives your Lightning Bolt benefits. This means all Lightning Bolt modifiers for damage, utility, and other effects. The ranks in
Endless Tempest will be significant for Cataclysm and Hurricane uptime.
Airidah’s Inexorable Will has two important parts: it clusters enemies together and gives significant cooldown reduction on Ultimate Skills. With enough other sources of cooldown reduction on your
Cataclysm, this item can be skipped in favor of a Legendary Ring with better gear affixes and Offensive Aspect.
Khamsin Steppewalkers offer strong gear affixes, including Nature Magic Cooldown and
Endless Tempest ranks for maintaining Cataclysm. The rampup to get the Unique Effect can be annoying, but that is also the time you are building your first
Provocation so it is not too disruptive.
Check our Unique Item Target-farming guide for information on where to find everything you need.
Mythic Unique Items
These Mythic Unique items are recommended for the build:
- Pit Push –
Shroud of False Death gives +1 to all Passives. This is a lot of damage multipliers, quality of life, and other benefits, and is generally strong to use. However, by replacing
Insatiable Fury, you will have to use
Pulverize to maintain Werebear form for
Provocation to stack up.
Check our Unique Item Target-farming guide for information on where to find everything you need.
Gems and Runewords
Use these recommended Gem and Runeword setups for the Cataclysm Druid:
Gems
| Weapon Gems | Armor Gems | Jewelry Gems |
|---|---|---|
Runewords
Use these Runeword combinations for the Cataclysm Druid, placed in 2-Handed Weapon and Armor slots:
| Runeword Combination | Runeword Effects |
|---|---|
| Nagu Zec | |
| Bac Jah |
Runewords use a conditional Rune of Ritual to generate Offering. The Offering is consumed by the Rune of Invocation to trigger its effect. Runes replace Gems in gear with two sockets. Up to two sets of Runeword Pairs can be placed at a time.
This setup is with farming in mind.
Jah is periodic teleports, and
Zec helps manage Cataclysm Cooldown.
Other options can include:
- Offense – Offensive choices like
Gar can be used over
Jah in content where you do not need the Teleport for mobility. Other triggers like
Neo,
Ahu or
Noc can be used to maintain the Critical Strike Chance. - Skill Ranks –
Vex can also be used in place of
Zec for a bit of damage and cooldown reduction thanks to the Skill Ranks in
Cataclysm. Zec offers more total cooldown reduction while Vex gives a little of everything.
Vex can be maintained with just
Ravens, opening up a Skill Slot.
Nagu is recommended as a convenient passive Offering gain for a lazy casting setup.
Igni and
Cir can be used as an alternative in a more active playstyle, opening up the Companion Skills for other options like
Debilitating Roar for extra defense. - Push –
Ahu
Qax
Nagu
Vex would be a strong push combination for top-end damage. Take Energize Spirit Boon over Iron Feather to keep Spirit topped.
Paragon Board
The following are the preferred Glyphs, Boards, and pathing recommended for making the most of the Cataclysm Druid.
The road to max Paragon is long. The above Paragon tabs show the following:
- The BASE SETUP tab spends 50 fewer points than the FULL SETUP, taking a stricter pathing to take almost all Legendary, Rare, and Magic Nodes, and activates all Glyph Nodes with their secondary effects.
- The FULL SETUP tab completes the Paragon Board in its final form, filling in the rest of the board to get the rest of the Magic and Rare Nodes and filling out Glyph additives.
Glyphs have two significant breakpoint increases. At Level 15, the glyph grows in radius and gains a special effect. At Level 46, the glyph grows to max radius and gains a strong conditional damage multiplier.
Glyphs are placed as if they are at least Level 15+ in radius. Total Boards placed are now limited to a max of 5; the Starter Board and four Class Boards. Rotate boards as necessary.
For a more Defensive setup, exchange
Headhunter for
Werebear.
Season 12 Mechanics
The Season of Slaughter introduces Bloodied Items, Killstreaks, and Bloodied Sigils.
Killstreaks
Slay enemies to advance your Killstreak. Gain Experience and seasonal reputation after the Killstreak completes. Higher Killstreak count gives more rewards.
Bloodied Items
Bloodied Gear will drop throughout Sanctuary, granting additional. stackable Bloodied Affixes that interact with Killstreaks. There are three categories of Bloodied Affixes:
- Rampage Affixes (Armor Slots) increase in power based on Killstreak Tier.
- Feast Affixes (Weapons) gives its periodic bonus every X kills.
- Hunger Affixes (Jewelry) increases drop rewards, scaling with Killstreak Tier.
Chase the following Bloodied Affixes for the Cataclysm Druid:
- Rampage (Armor): Primary Stat per Killstreak Tier.
- Other affixes, such as Critical Strike Chance if not capped or Cooldown Reduction, will also be beneficial.
- Feast (Weapons): Every 25 Kills, Gain Berserking.
- Berserking increases damage and movement speed.
- Hunger (Jewelry): Any
- Hunger Affixes are non-combat power reward increases. The power of the rest of the item will be more important. Feel free to tailor the affixes to what you are grinding for. For example, if you want more seasonal reputation, then Increased Reputation from Kill Streaks will be beneficial.
Bloodied Sigils
Bloodied Sigils empower content and increase Bloodied drop reward volume for your Nightmare Dungeons, Infernal Hordes, and Lair Bosses. These are a step up, as the Relentless Butcher Bloodied Affix increases the difficulty of the content by around a full Torment Tier.
Beware of Bloodsoaked Sigils, which are even further empowered, guaranteeing multiple Bloodied Items and scaling the content to about Pit Tier 100. Cataclysm will struggle to complete these without the very best gear and high paragon.
Mercenaries
Once unlocked, Mercenaries are followers that aid the Player in combat. A main mercenary is chosen to fight alongside you, granting strong buffs or perks, and a secondary Mercenary is chosen to periodically Reinforce you under a chosen Opportunity condition.
Main Mercenary – Subo, the Drunken Archer
- Skills:
Wire Trap,
Ready At Hand,
Cover Fire,
Opening Fire
Reinforcement – Raheir, the Shieldbearer
Subo’s
Opening Fire Critical Strike Damage debuff is a strong damage gain. The minimap target tracking is high-quality of life on top. Other Mercenaries are usable, such as if you need additional defenses like Armor from Raheir.
Build Mechanics
Rotation and Playstyle
Rotation
- Build
Provocation by being in Werebear form, either from
Insatiable Fury or from casts of
Pulverize.
Earthen Bulwark into
Cataclysm. Repeat 2-3 times a minute and enjoy.- Until your next
Provocation is ready, cast
Pulverize for damage reduction,
Ancestral Guidance, and if needed to maintain Werebear form.
Provocation will automatically count up to 10 thanks to
Insatiable Fury; you will maintain Werebear form without having to
Pulverize or other Werebear skills. Be careful not to press other skills that might consume your
Provocation before your Cataclysm can.
Either opt to wait for the first 10 stacks, or completely do not worry about that at all, and your next Cataclysm cast will pick up the Overpower anyway.
Maintaining
Ancestral Guidance is unnecessary in trivial/lower farm content.
Autocasting
Cataclysm
To make this build even simpler, you can autocast your
Cataclysm in a couple of ways:
- Assign a secondary hotkey to your Cataclysm and place your favorite paperweight on the keybind.
- For PC, the Numlock trick from d3 still works for autocasting abilities
- Have Numlock set to on.
- Secondary Bind your skills to Numlock 1-4
- Press and hold the skills you want to autocast, and turn Numlock off while still holding those skills
- Release these keys, and the skills should autocast whenever they are off cooldown and you are out of town.
- Tabbing away from the screen will reset this autocast, and you will need to redo the action.
- Controllers can set Cataclysm to an L2/R2 keybind and position your controller to keep it pressed.
Push Rotation
- Stay in Werebear form for your 10 stacks of
Provocation. Give a small gap near max stacks so you do not accidentally spend your Provocation on anything else. When your stacks are capped: - Cast
Earthen Bulwark to prepare
Resonance for your Cataclysm. - Cast your empowered
Cataclysm.
- Cast
- Maintain Werebear form between casts of
Cataclysm for damage bonuses like
Survival Instincts: - Use
Debilitating Roar for the damage buff and damage reduction debuffs. - If used,
Primal Pulverize for the damage reduction against important enemies and Ancestral Guidance damage multiplier.
- Use
Be careful about wasting a
Provocation on casts other than
Cataclysm, as you want the Overpower buff for every Cataclysm.
Companion Skills are there for
Nagu and are not actively used. In a push build that is actively attacking, replace
Nagu with
Igni. This opens options like
Debilitating Roar for damage reduction or
Primal Shred for mobility.
Use
Earthen Bulwark as necessary for Barrier, Fortify, and Unstoppable.
Skills, Support, and Synergies
The Cataclysm Druid loads its power into its Ultimate Skill
Cataclysm, stacking heavy multipliers and additives to send out Twisters and Lightning Bolts against enemies.
Cataclysm Damage
Lots of parts come together to make Cataclysm do massive damage. Here are the notable ones.
From Items:
Tempest Roar makes Cataclysm a Werewolf Skill, benefitting from multipliers like Lust for Carnage and other Shapeshifting bonuses.
Mjölnic Ryng increases all damage for the duration of Cataclysm and also makes Cataclysm be affected by modifiers to Lightning Bolt. These sources include:
Lightning Augments gives
Cataclysm a high chance to deal double damage.
From Paragon:
- All used Paragon legendary nodes increase Cataclysm damage, but Ancestral Guidance is especially potent, increasing damage based on Spirit when cast. Spirit is increased from a few sources to max this power, including paragon nodes and Gift of the Stag Spirit Boon. Because of
Mjölnic Ryng, we are always at full Spirit.
From other Skill Passives:
Provocation guarantees Overpower for every cast.
Charged Atmosphere boosts lightning bolt damage
Cataclysm has a short 0.5-second lockout for the Lightning Bolts to target the same enemy or area. This will slow down bossing somewhat, but it is manageable.
Poisoned Condition for
Envenom is applied from Overload Spirit Boon, giving all Storm Damage a 5-second Poison for 20% of damage dealt.
Key Passive
The Key Passive for this build is
Ursine Strength:
- Gain 30% Maximum Life, 20% more damage, and a 100% Overpower bonus while in Werebear form and for 8 seconds after leaving it.
We maintain Werebear form with
Insatiable Fury.
Pulverize and
Debilitating Roar can also force Werebear form.
Cataclysm Cooldown Management
Maintaining Cataclysm is essential for output. Having enough duration and cooldown reduction means being able to chain casts without significant downtime between casts.
We gain Cataclysm duration from:
- Calamity Spirit Boon for 35% more Ultimate Duration.
- Ranks in
Endless Tempest.
To lower the cooldown on Cataclysm, we have:
- Skill ranks in Cataclysm reduce cooldown. These are from Skill points and sources like
Vehement Brawler’s Aspect,
Vex or
Mad Wolf’s Glee. - Ultimate Cooldown Reduction from Tempering on Jewelry.
Zec Rune gives Ultimate Cooldown Reduction every trigger. - Ultimate Cooldown Reduction from
Airidah’s Inexorable Will. This is a good affix to target with Greater Affix, and as needed, Masterworking. Eventually, we can skip this item in favor of a legendary ring, which offers better total offense. - Khassim Steppewalkers for Nature Cooldown Reduction.
There are a few very inefficient ways to additionally lower cooldown on Cataclysm. Try all the above before resorting to these:
- Calm before the Storm Spirit Boon. Unfortunately,
Cataclysm has a low total Lucky Hit – the tooltip’s high lucky hit is over its full duration, so is misleading. - Other Unique Items that might have Cooldown Reduction, such as
Harlequin Crest. - Items with Skills ranks that would lower cooldown, like
Mad Wolf’s Glee. Using this Unique would mean swapping from
Insatiable Fury, so having to maintain werebear form with
Pulverize or
Debilitating Roar.
Snapshotting
For those who do not care about snapshots, great news. The Farm Rotation and its gear setup mitigates snaps, so you do not have to worry, think, or stress about them.\
For those interested in mechanics (and what a great section to be reading!), here’s what is going on.
Snapshotting means preparing multipliers, buffs, or other effects into the entire length of the Skill; in this case, our
Cataclysm. Since Season 8, recasts before duration runs out no longer keep buffs, so these buffs need to be loaded into every Cataclysm cast. Don’t worry, it’s a lot to read but not a lot to manage in-game.
What are we snapshotting into our Cataclysm:
| Power | Effect | Trigger |
|---|---|---|
| Guaranteed Overpower | Max | |
| Earth Skills empower your next Storm Skill | ||
| +Skill Ranks | Activating Rune of Ritual |
Provocation guarantees Overpower; you want max stacks before each cast of Cataclysm.
Resonance is a strong elemental multiplier.
Earthen Bulwark is the convenient Earth Skill trigger before each storm skill Cataclysm. Casts of Bulwark will not interfere with
Provocation. - Skill Rank buffs like
Vex grant cooldown reduction to Cataclysm, but only if active when casting Cataclysm. - Another example would be the Skill ranks from
Stormshifter’s Aspect, which would only give Cataclysm Skill Rank Cooldown Reduction if Hurricane is active when casting Cataclysm. This build does not opt to use Hurricane.
- Another example would be the Skill ranks from
Lots of multipliers are not snapshot into the cataclysm, but are instead dynamic or conditional checks, so they only give their bonuses when those conditions are met, such as:
- Form-based multipliers like
Ursine Strength,
Mending, or Survival Instincts. - Status condition Checks, like Poisoned for
Envenom. - Dynamic buffs like
Backlash and
Catastrophe. - Skill Rank increases to Cataclysm’s damage like from
Vex are dynamic.
So how’s this play?
Provocation takes 10 stacks to guarantee an Overpower. I will:
- Cast Werebear skills to be in Werebear form to gain Provocation stacks.
- *Wait* without hitting Skills, and watch Provocation stacks so the passive is not accidentally spent on something that is not Cataclysm.
- When stacks hit 10,
Earthen Bulwark into
Cataclysm. - Repeat each Cataclysm.
At this point, you should see Blue/Orange numbers indicating Cataclysm is overpowering. Not all Lightning Bolts will be Overpowered Cataclysm Bolts, as some are coming from other sources like
Runeworker’s Conduit Aspect,
Charged Atmosphere, and Overload Spirit Boon.
Provocation
Provocation – After 10 seconds of Werebear form, your next non-Defensive Skill will Overpower and deal increased damage.
Provocation is how we Overpower our Cataclysm for a large damage multiplier.
At least one point in
Provocation is required. Provocation takes 10 seconds in Werebear form to be ready to trigger. With
Insatiable Fury, Werebear form is automatically maintained, so counting and buff watching becomes less necessary.
Sometimes the Provocation stack buff will be pushed off the buff bar because too many other active buffs…There is no solution to this other than keeping count or waiting a bit for the buffs to reappear.
Bug: Other Duration Skills like
Hurricane can eat your
Provocation or prematurely end the Overpower on your Cataclysm!
How worth is Overpowering our Cataclysm? Willpower users like Druids get thousands in additive overpower damage. This is not the giga multiplier it used to be, but it is still substantial. However, at high gear and paragon, even un-Overpowered Cataclysm can kill T4 world content, so there is a point where it is overkill.
Elixirs, Incense, and Health Potions
The Alchemist offers helpful consumables at the cost of foraged materials found throughout Sanctuary.
- Craft
Elixir of Resourcefulness II to scale
Ancestral Guidance. - One of each Incense Category can be used, for a total of three active Incenses at a time. In priority:
- Defensive –
Reddamine Buzz for Max Life. - Core Stat –
Blessed Guide for Willpower. - Resistance –
Soothing Spices for All Resist, All Resist Maximum, and Armor.
- Defensive –
Season Updates
Not much is changing with Druid this season. Expect the same gameplay and meta as previous seasons. Cataclysm may struggle to compete in Bloodied and Bloodsoaked Sigil content without much higher gear investment than usual.
The following list details the important changes in the Season 12 Patch Updates that are specific to the Cataclysm Druid, as well as any Known Bugs. For general Season 12 information, check out our Season 12 Hub.
Skills and Stats:
Thunderstruck - Previous: Storm Skills deal increased damage equal to 20% of your Damage vs Close and Damage vs Distant bonuses, up to 60%.
- Now: Storm Skills deal 60% increased damage, and 15% chance to Critically Strike.
Known Bugs:
- Some additive lightning bolt damage sources, such as Lightning Bolt Tempers and
Electrocution, are not properly scaling Cataclysm damage. - The electrocution glyph is still taken for its working multipliers.
- Using
Provocation on other duration Skills like
Hurricane will cancel the active Overpower on
Cataclysm. This is why we do not recommend Hurricane with
Stormshifter’s Aspect.
