This Affix Is Killing Your Mythic+ Runs in WoW Midnight Season 1

Midnight Season 1 Dungons

The fifth week of Mythic+ in this season is over, and Nightstalker314 is taking a look at the weekly data provided by Raider.IO. Despite the implementation of bonus rolls, activity decreased overall by 11.27%. The Ascendant affix remained the roughest one within the rotation and dragged down the success rate. With more than 20,000,000 completed runs and 3,000,000 active characters, MN S1 is still outperforming previous seasons in all but one metric. And all of this while the Asian servers have not caught up to their numbers from TWW S3. But let’s look at the details.

Weekly Total Run Performance Compared To Other Seasons

The global drop-off of 11.27% is once again a combination of just 9.41% on the Chinese servers and 12.48% in the other four regions. Compared to previous seasons, MN S1 has only slightly dipped below TWW S1 in total numbers. But the relative decline since the start is still more significant. For week 5, we can also point to a rather lengthy maintenance for patch 12.0.5, which took away a good chunk of the first day of the ID.

First 10 Weeks Compared to Midnight Season 1

After a weaker start, the Chinese servers are slowly stabilizing their usual global share closer to 45%, with 40.27% in week 5. Overall, it seems there is less interest in Midnight or just M+ in the Asian region. When comparing completed runs to character ratios (r/c) for MN S1 and TWW S3, every region shows a between 13.36% to 16.26% higher value. This leads us to believe that there is just less hype around Midnight in Asia.

Completed Runs After 40 Days

MN S1 vs. TWW S3 Metrics After 40 Days

For this comparison, we only have reliable data from these two seasons. For earlier ones, RaiderIO did not have full access to the Chinese armory API. The gaps for certain graphs are tied to temporary issues with the API or RaiderIO’s leaderboards. General activity is slightly higher (+13.02% more runs) in MN S1, likely due to easier tuning. The number of active characters cannot keep up with TWW S3, though. This will drastically change after week 9, since TWW S3 saw a major decline in activity after the start of Legion Remix.

Midnight S1 VS TWW S3

Looking at the different regions, we see a much clearer picture. The EU (+34.75%) and the US (+26.55%) are seeing much higher run numbers in general. The completed runs for Asian servers are on par with TWW S3, but so far, fewer characters and most likely fewer accounts (-19.3% for CN) are participating. Since we do not see much feedback from these regions, this could either be a lack of interest in the expansion setting or tied to class and addon changes.

Completed Runs Ratio

Total Runs Across All Dungeons

The split across all dungeons has narrowed a bit compared to the previous week. Their order has remained unchanged. In general, the in-time percentage has gone down. This, as per usual, is tied to the major affix change. Ascendant still seems to be slightly overtuned. Especially in dungeons where either pulls or the player group can be more spread out, and CC can’t be timed that well.

Total Runs Across Dungeons

The success rate dropped by 0.42 percentage points to 89.29%. Pit (91.13%) remained at number one, but Skyreach (90.72%) and Seat (90.35%) swapped positions. Spire (89.94%) and Terrace (89.51%) also switched positions. Nexus-Point (88.38%) saw the biggest drop, but stayed ahead of Academy (87.55%). Mists of Tirna Scithe (86.10%) wasn’t too far behind, but could still benefit from a few trash nerfs.

Split Across All Key Levels

84.96% of all runs were completed at key level 10 and higher. With 35.99% at level 10 alone, we saw a similar share as in week 4. Key level 12 is already shaping up as the next focal point for progress and vault farming. At key level 16, we also saw the first clear increase (+20.63%) in activity compared to last week. Low-level keys keep losing relevance with a decrease between 24% and 33%. The high-end keys saw continued growth. We were still a key level ahead of TWW S3 in week 5. And the raw number of high-level keys was between 6 and 216 times larger for levels 17 to 21.

Key Level Split

The decrease in the in-time percentage was clearly tied to the impact of the Ascendant affix in lower key levels. Beyond +11, we saw next to no major negative changes, while the percentage for +12 improved by 3.34 points. Meanwhile, between +5 and +11, we saw drop-offs of up to 2.9 points. This affix needs further adjustments. Maybe decreasing the number of orbs would be more useful than a reduced cast time.

Conclusion and Week 6 Forecast

The season is doing really well, despite the lack of interest on Asian servers. Ascendant remains the worst affix in the entire rotation. And for now, it still affects more than half of all runs during these IDs. We’ll also have to see if the final item upgrade in 2 weeks leads to another boost in activity.

As of this writing, 120 hours after the US reset, hourly numbers for the three major regions are close to the previous week. 2.39% and 0.38% ahead for the US and the EU, and just 1.01% behind for CN. This is quite unusual for a regular week, but we’ll look at the details in the next breakdown.
