Barbarian Support Build with Raekor (Patch 2.4.2 / Season 8)

Table of Contents

With a focus shifted away from perma-stun and damage buffs into Toughness boosting and crowd control, the support Barbarian rises to meet the requirements of the metagame. This crowd control and buff-oriented build is strictly multiplayer oriented, a zero DPS spec that plays part of a composition with other damage dealing party members.

the build requires the following set pieces:

1. About the Author

This build is presented to you by Deadset, one of the very few professional Diablo 3 players. Deadset regularly publishes video guides on Youtube, where you can see how this and other builds play out in practice.

2. Multiplayer Progression Build

3. Rotation

The Support Barb assumes a leader position in Greater Rifts, controlling fights for the DPS characters to clear in relative safety. Furious Charge Furious Charge headlong into the rift, aggroing and drawing enemies into a big pile near your DPS teammate(s) with Ancient Spear Ancient Spear through the Harpoon Harpoon effect. The support Barb will also be responsible for several crucial party buffs and debuffs. You will make monsters more susceptible to damage through Threatening Shout Threatening Shout Falter Falter, while supporting your allies with Ignore Pain Ignore Pain Mob Rule Mob Rule and War Cry War Cry Veteran's Warning Veteran's Warning on cooldown. Ground Stomp Ground Stomp Jarring Slam Jarring Slam is not only a utility stun at your disposal, but also a targeted tool to feed Health Globes to your Witch Doctor DPS (stacking Gruesome Feast Gruesome Feast).

4. Skills, Runes and Passives

The build purposefully lists no particular rune for Furious Charge Furious Charge, since you can take any rune you like and still receive the benefits of all five runes from the 4-piece set bonus of the Raekor set — a vital part of the playstyle, as it brings its signature mobility. The cooldown reduction of Merciless Assault Merciless Assault, the freezing effect of Cold Rush Cold Rush and the double charge effect of Dreadnought Dreadnought work together to supercharge your scouting potential, not to mention a lifesaving proc of Band of Might Band of Might.

What can be considered the signature move of the Support Barb, as well as the source of long range crowd control, Ancient Spear Ancient Spear is taken with either of the displacement runes — Rage Flip Rage Flip or Harpoon Harpoon. The guide recommends Rage Flip Rage Flip, as it complements your ahead-of-group scouting better, and by dragging behind you results in a slightly longer distance pull than the competing Harpoon Harpoon, albeit with a slightly higher skill cap to use. Regardless of your choice, use Ancient Spear Ancient Spear liberally to group big groups of enemies tightly together, benefiting the AoE of your DPS allies.

Besides the excellent crowd control, the support Barbarian implements four utility skills — split in half between enfeebling the enemy and strengthening his allies.

You will be flipping the base damage debuff of Threatening Shout Threatening Shout into an increase of damage against affected monsters with the Falter Falter rune. You will also need to use Ground Stomp Ground Stomp regularly into packs your group has engaged; not only to add a helpful stun, but also to produce Health Globes from the Jarring Slam Jarring Slam rune. This is important due to Globe-reliant bonuses for your DPS teammates, such as the Gruesome Feast Gruesome Feast passive for Witch Doctors.

You will be flipping the base damage debuff of Threatening Shout Threatening Shout into an increase of damage against affected monsters with the Falter Falter rune. The skill also has a considerable Fury generation aspect, which is useful in keeping up the Ancient Spear Ancient Spear spam.

War Cry War Cry is a two-in-one utility skill that brings extra Toughness with the Veteran's Warning Veteran's Warning rune. The buff has a fire-and-forget nature with its double screen (100 yard) radius and a duration three times the natural cooldown — but situations will arise when you need it for the Fury generation, so War Cry War Cry is not as passive as it first seems.

Arguably the most important Toughness increase you can provide to the party, Ignore Pain Ignore Pain takes on a role of a group-wide buff with the rune Mob Rule Mob Rule. With a generous, screen-wide range of 50 yards, this versatile damage reduction tool cuts the incoming hurt in half for you and by a quarter for party members, and provides immunity to control-impairing effects (stuns, freezes, immobilizes, etc.) The potency of Ignore Pain Ignore Pain is a major reason for the cooldown reduction focus of the build, as well as the necessity for Pride of Cassius Pride of Cassius to reach permanence of the buff.

This concludes the overview of the Active Skills, now let us look through the Passives.

In a proper setup, your DPS teammates will not be the only ones benefiting from Health Globe generation. You can take great advantage of it yourself through the Pound of Flesh Pound of Flesh passive, granting you a substantial increase of movement speed (20% at 5 stacks, not affected by the 25% cap), along with some helpful health sustain.

A passive you will not see outside support setups, Inspiring Presence Inspiring Presence is a pure utility addition that doubles the duration of War Cry War Cry and Threatening Shout Threatening Shout. On top of that, it supplies the party with a %-based life regeneration effect with a humongous range that you constantly refresh.

To strengthen a build that frequently scouts dangerous, unexplored territory and dives headfirst into the fray, you will be taking Sword and Board Sword and Board. Synergizing nicely with a worn Stormshield Stormshield, this passive will cut incoming damage by another 30%, as well as improve Fury management with a 20% reduction.

Your final passive slot is more flexible than the rest; a commonly suggested choice is the Nerves of Steel Nerves of Steel cheat death, allowing you a free pass from burst affixes once every minute. Other viable options include the strong mitigation of Tough as Nails Tough as Nails, bringing in a physical protection counterpart to the elemental resistance of Superstition Superstition, or the near-death bulwark of Relentless Relentless.

5. Best in Slot Gear and Alternatives

Following the role stereotypes, the Support Barb uses a mixture of sets and utility legendaries to maximize Toughness, cooldown and resource management. Note that the value of experience gemming and gear has been greatly diminished since Patch 2.4, all but eliminating the formerly favored XP-oriented item setups.

The desired armor set is The Legacy of Raekor, incorporating Raekor's Wraps Raekor's Wraps, Raekor's Burden Raekor's Burden, Raekor's Breeches Raekor's Breeches and Raekor's Heart Raekor's Heart to attain Furious Charge Furious Charge CDR from the 2-piece bonus and all runes from the 4-piece bonus. Rolls-wise, aim for Vitality, Cooldown Reduction and Crit Chance on Raekor's Wraps Raekor's Wraps, CDR and Toughness stats on Raekor's Burden Raekor's Burden, and full Toughness stats on Raekor's Breeches Raekor's Breeches and Raekor's Heart Raekor's Heart.

Free of damage dealing concerns, the support Barbarian can focus on pure utility in the jewelry. You have three recommended rings — Obsidian Ring of the Zodiac Obsidian Ring of the Zodiac, Band of Might Band of Might and Oculus Ring Oculus Ring — two of which you will equip and Cube the third, according to your better rolled items. Obsidian Ring of the Zodiac Obsidian Ring of the Zodiac is a powerful tool for this cooldown-heavy build: benefiting greatly from the heavy Ancient Spear Ancient Spear use, it allows for permanent uptime of crucial abilities like Ignore Pain Ignore Pain, Threatening Shout Threatening Shout, and War Cry War Cry. Band of Might Band of Might will provide you with up to 60% damage reduction for the paltry requirement of a Furious Charge Furious Charge once every 8 seconds — a mandatory ingredient of your survival in high GRs. Finally, the revamped Oculus Ring Oculus Ring will provide up to the impressive 85% multiplicative damage buff in a circular area for your DPS party members to stand in. While its wording is vague, it does trigger off assists, and will thus work on support characters.

To complete the jewelry, it is recommended to obtain an immunity amulet for a highly lethal source of elemental damage. Xephirian Amulet Xephirian Amulet, which renders you immune to lightning, or The Star of Azkaranth The Star of Azkaranth against fire, are the most desirable options. Other variants include the proc-based grouping utiltiy of The Ess of Johan The Ess of Johan, or a nicely rolled Hellfire Amulet Hellfire Amulet with a synergistic passive like Relentless Relentless.

A crucial piece for the Support Barbarian is the mighty belt Pride of Cassius Pride of Cassius, whose legendary power extends the duration of Ignore Pain Ignore Pain by up to 6 seconds. Obtaining the maximum value of the unique bonus solidifies the uptime of your strongest mitigation buff, and thankfully the belt is common enough to obtain a BiS roll relatively quickly. Regardless, it can be cubed if you get a well-rolled Chilanik's Chain Chilanik's Chain first; stat-wise the two belts are interchangeable, but Chilanik's Chain Chilanik's Chain is easier to maximize through Kanai's Cube because of its broader legendary affix range.

Resetting survivability cooldowns is top priority in Greater Rifts, and no other helm will empower your socket bonuses quite like a Leoric's Crown Leoric's Crown. Essentially doubling the effect of the gem slotted in your helm, this legendary will bump your CDR by 25% with a Flawless Royal Diamond Flawless Royal Diamond.

You have some wiggle room when deciding on your bracer; a case can be made for the party-wide additive damage increase of Strongarm Bracers Strongarm Bracers, triggered by the Furious Charge Furious Charge knockup. Better yet though, you can take the elite-spawning Nemesis Bracers Nemesis Bracers to shorten the time spent looking for champion packs — at least one elite spawner should be present in the group, and you are well suited to the task as the scout.

Illusory Boots Illusory Boots are a crucial piece for the mobility of the build, allowing you to ignore collision and pass freely through enemies — an indispensable bonus for a character tasked with scouting and monster control. These boots are farmed through Act II bounty caches, and are relatively easy to obtain with a good roll due to their fixed stats and no-range affix. Stat-wise, aim strictly for Toughness.

You have a degree of freedom in choosing your weapon and offhand, with many recognized and highly ranking viable combinations. The standard recommendation (especially if you are new to the playstyle) is the Pig Sticker Pig StickerStormshield Stormshield combo. Pig Sticker Pig Sticker conveniently offers five primary stats and a superior dagger attack speed. Since supports care nothing about Weapon Damage, Pig Sticker Pig Sticker is a pure stat stick that needs Strength, Vitality, Cooldown Reduction, Attack Speed, and ideally the damage range gets rerolled into Resource Cost Reduction (or one of the missing aforementioned stats). Alternatively, you can equip the Istvan's Paired Blades set — the two swords Little Rogue Little Rogue and The Slanderer The Slanderer. While depriving you of the Stormshield Stormshield defensive bulwark, these weapons will sync with the overall goals of the support Barbarian by supplying you with 30% Armor and Attack Speed when fully stacked.

7. Gems

Your three jewelry sockets will be taken up by the legendary gems Wreath of Lightning Wreath of Lightning, Gogok of Swiftness Gogok of Swiftness, and Gem of Efficacious Toxin Gem of Efficacious Toxin.

  • Wreath of Lightning Wreath of Lightning provides you with a nice AoE proc to aggro enemies with, along with an extremely helpful 25% movement speed for the duration of the proc — easily obtainable from the gem's level 25 property.
  • Gogok of Swiftness Gogok of Swiftness synergizes well with the build, indirectly providing the entire party with more survivability by increasing your essential Cooldown Reduction, as well as substantial personal Toughness from the Dodge bonuses.
  • The recommended gem for your third and final jewelry slot is Gem of Efficacious Toxin Gem of Efficacious Toxin, for the party-wide damage increase against — and reduced damage from — enemies affected by its poisonous DoT.

8. Kanai's Cube

The Kanai's Cube recommendations are as follows: Solanium Solanium for the weapon slot, Chilanik's Chain Chilanik's Chain or Pride of Cassius Pride of Cassius for the armor slot, and Obsidian Ring of the Zodiac Obsidian Ring of the Zodiac, Band of Might Band of Might, or Oculus Ring Oculus Ring for the jewelry slot.

  • The recommended item for the weapon slot is Solanium Solanium, whose Health Globe on Crit bonuses will feed nicely into Globe-reliant bonuses for your DPS teammates, such as the Gruesome Feast Gruesome Feast passive for Witch Doctors.
  • One core Kanai's Cube item is Chilanik's Chain Chilanik's Chain for the armor slot. This belt provides a party-wide movement speed buff when you activate War Cry War Cry, essential both during XP runs (for efficiency) and progression content (to skip bad fights). As mentioned above, this slot is interchangeable with Pride of Cassius Pride of Cassius depending on your better rolled item.
  • As previously mentioned, your jewelry slot will be taken up by your worst roll of the three necessary rings for the build — Obsidian Ring of the Zodiac Obsidian Ring of the Zodiac, Band of Might Band of Might and Oculus Ring Oculus Ring.
