Monk Inna Support Build (Patch 2.4.2 / Season 7)

Table of Contents

With group compositions heavily favoring crowd control, damage mitigation and health sustain, the support Monk maintains a strong position in the metagame. Note that this utility heavy, control-oriented build is strictly multiplayer oriented, a zero DPS spec that plays part of a composition with other damage dealing party members.

the build requires the following set pieces:

1. About the Author

This build is presented to you by Deadset, one of the very few professional Diablo 3 players. Deadset regularly publishes video guides on Youtube, where you can see how this and other builds play out in practice.

2. Multiplayer Progression Build

3. Rotation

The build assumes a protector position in Greater Rifts, opening fights for the DPS characters to clear in relative safety. Begin combat by dropping an Inner Sanctuary Inner Sanctuary circle beneath the DPS of the group, followed by drawing enemies in with your Cyclone Strike Cyclone Strike, and finishing the rotation with a debuffing from Blinding Flash Blinding Flash. Where a support Barbarian will be responsible for long range enemy pulling, you will be responsible for much of the actual enemy stacking, as well as reducing enemy damage through Crippling Wave Crippling Wave Concussion Concussion and Mantra of Salvation Mantra of Salvation Agility Agility. You will be constantly healing your group through the effect of Epiphany Epiphany Soothing Mist Soothing Mist, which you should activate on cooldown.

4. Skills, Runes and Passives

The recommended generator skill for the build is Crippling Wave Crippling Wave, coupled with the support-oriented Concussion Concussion rune, which reduces the damage potential of affected enemies in a generously wide arc. Note that one of the support party members has to slot the legendary gem Iceblink Iceblink and if the task falls to you, you need to swap Concussion Concussion out for the Tsunami Tsunami rune.

Cyclone Strike Cyclone Strike will be used to draw enemies close, and you can choose to either extend its radius to the impressive 34 yards of Implosion Implosion, or counteract some of the Patch 2.4.2 healing reduction of Soothing Mist Soothing Mist with the healing rune Soothing Breeze Soothing Breeze. Note the synergy between the two skills, both scaling their healing property with Health Globe bonuses on gear. While Soothing Breeze Soothing Breeze will be the stronger burst heal of the two, cast it once every four seconds (to maintain Lefebvre's Soliloquy Lefebvre's Soliloquy) instead of spamming it, as monsters get progressively resistant to crowd control and you will make the support Barbarian's job harder.

Inner Sanctuary Inner Sanctuary is a key defensive skill in your arsenal, protecting and strengthening not only you, but nearby allies as well. On a reasonable 20-second base cooldown, this skill will serve as a protective circle when fighting within, and will encase affected allies with a significant shield from the Intervene Intervene rune, again scaling with Health Globe bonuses.

Epiphany Epiphany is a staple in the Monk arsenal, allowing you to stick yourself — and as a consequence, your allies — on a target to ensure the kill. Epiphany Epiphany also increases your Spirit regeneration by 20 per second, ensuring that even the most tenacious Cyclone Strike Cyclone Strike and Mantra of Salvation Mantra of Salvation use will remain uninterrupted. And most important of all, you will be adding the healing effect of Soothing Mist Soothing Mist to your active abilities, dictating the use of high Attack Speed and Health Globe bonuses on gear.

Blinding Flash Blinding Flash extends over the 11-yard circular area of safety of Inner Sanctuary Inner Sanctuary with a 20-yard crowd control from the blinding effect. This utility cooldown brings further value with the damage reduction of Crippling Light Crippling Light, knocking another 25% off the incoming hurt for 5 seconds after the Blind wears off. There is a notable variation of the build that replaces this skill slot with Exploding Palm Exploding Palm The Flesh is Weak The Flesh is Weak for its spreading additive damage debuff; this leads to alterations in gearing and Kanai's Cube, outlined below.

Uncommon among the protective skills because of its spender nature, Mantra of Salvation Mantra of Salvation passively increases all resistances by 20%, and adds 35% dodge chance through the Agility Agility rune. Its active component further increases resistances for a brief duration, and can be spammed reasonably often due to the good resource maintenance of the build. When speedfarming or just generally confident in the group survivability, you can consider replacing Mantra of Salvation Mantra of Salvation Agility Agility for Mantra of Retribution Mantra of Retribution Transgression Transgression, whose passive attack speed bonus is synergistic with most meta-appropriate DPS builds.

This concludes the overview of the Active Skills, now let us look through the Passives.

Beacon of Ytar Beacon of Ytar is a solid foundation for high skill uptime, providing a 20% chunk to your Cooldown Reduction. Every second that you shave off Inner Sanctuary Inner Sanctuary and Blinding Flash Blinding Flash can be the difference of life or death of your DPS teammate.

The Unity Unity passive will contribute to the damage of your group with a substantial 20% additive bonus (growing in value with the reduction of additive damage sources in Patch 2.4.2). You will easily max out the capabilities of the passive with the trio of ally-oriented Mantras originating from the Inna set, and a full multiplayer group.

Alacrity Alacrity adds a 15% separate attack speed multiplier to your Spirit Generators, which offers incredible value to a build that strives to output the maximum number of Crippling Wave Crippling Wave Concussion Concussions in the shortest amount of time.

Resolve Resolve is a key defensive passive reducing the damage of affected enemies on all auto attacks and most elemental affixes, making it a great fit for the current mitigation meta in Greater Rifts. An alternative choice for the slot if you find yourself getting spiked a lot is Near Death Experience Near Death Experience for the cheat death.

5. Best in Slot Gear and Alternatives

In a typical support build fashion, the healing Monk adopts a mixture of sets and utility legendaries to maximize Toughness, cooldown and resource management. Your stat goals for items across the board are high Cooldown Reduction, Crit Chance and Attack Speed, along with a Health Globe Healing Bonus on all the items able to roll the stat (Chest, Shoulders, Boots, Amulet, Rings) to benefit your Epiphany Epiphany Soothing Mist Soothing Mist, Cyclone Strike Cyclone Strike Soothing Breeze Soothing Breeze and Inner Sanctuary Inner Sanctuary Intervene Intervene. The fixed set piece is Inna's Favor Inna's Favor, working with two more pieces of your choice: Inna's Radiance Inna's Radiance, Inna's Vast Expanse Inna's Vast Expanse, Inna's Hold Inna's Hold or Inna's Temperance Inna's Temperance (the boots slot will be taken, so Inna's Sandals Inna's Sandals are not to be considered). Using a cubed Ring of Royal Grandeur Ring of Royal Grandeur, 3 Inna pieces in different combinations will produce the valuable 2- and 4- piece bonuses of the Inna's Mantra set. The benefits of the doubled effectiveness of your chosen Mantra, along with the free base effect of all four Mantras makes the Inna set a staple for the support Monk.

Depending on your allocation of Inna pieces, you will have to choose two armor slots to fit a second set in. Either two piece Raiment of a Thousand Storms (standard build with Blinding Flash Blinding Flash) or two piece Uliana's Strategem (Exploding Palm Exploding Palm variant) need to be implemented, and you can freely choose between the helm, chest, gloves or pants for your chosen second set (again, due to item distribution set boots cannot be slotted). By taking Raiment, you will enjoy a tremendous 25% increase to your Spirit Generator attack speed, leading to better overall healing; by taking Uliana, you increase the party damage better with easily spread Exploding Palm Exploding Palms. Similarly to the Inna set stat priority, you should aim for high Cooldown Reduction, Crit Chance and Attack Speed across the board.

Not responsible for damage dealing in any way, the support Monk can focus on pure utility in the jewelry. Obsidian Ring of the Zodiac Obsidian Ring of the Zodiac is a powerful tool for this cooldown-heavy build: benefiting greatly from the Cyclone Strike Cyclone Strike spam, it allows for permanent uptime of crucial abilities like Epiphany Epiphany, Inner Sanctuary Inner Sanctuary and Blinding Flash Blinding Flash. In your remaining slot, you can take the revamped Oculus Ring Oculus Ring — it now provides up to the impressive 85% multiplicative damage buff in a circular area for your DPS party members to stand in. While its wording is vague, it does trigger off assists, and will thus work on support characters.

To complete the jewelry, you have a number of options for the amulet slot. Arguably your best pick would be a well rolled Hellfire Amulet Hellfire Amulet, with a helpful fifth passive like Seize the Initiative Seize the Initiative or Near Death Experience Near Death Experience. Another great synergistic option is the Act III cache amulet Overwhelming Desire Overwhelming Desire, whose infrequent damage buffing proc benefits much from the attack speed focus of the build. Alternatively, you can obtain an immunity amulet for a highly lethal source of elemental damage. Xephirian Amulet Xephirian Amulet, which renders you immune to lightning, or The Star of Azkaranth The Star of Azkaranth against fire, are the most desirable options. In the stats aim for Cooldown Reduction, Crit Chance, Toughness and Health Globe Healing Bonus.

Illusory Boots Illusory Boots are a crucial piece for the mobility of the build, allowing you to ignore collision and pass freely through enemies — an indispensable freedom in a build lacking Dashing Strike Dashing Strike. These boots are farmed through Act II bounty caches, and are relatively easy to obtain with a good roll due to their fixed stats and no-range affix. Stat-wise, aim strictly for Toughness and mind the ability to roll Health Globe Healing Bonus in the secondary stats.

The shoulder will be taken by Lefebvre's Soliloquy Lefebvre's Soliloquy — a Patch 2.4 addition that reduces incoming damage by up to 50% after casting Cyclone Strike Cyclone Strike, which mimics the playstyle of this crowd control-heavy build. Seek out Cooldown Reduction and high Toughness stats, along with Health Globe healing bonuses to best complement the build.

Two bracers — Strongarm Bracers Strongarm Bracers and Spirit Guards Spirit Guards — can be considered as best-in-slot for the build. With optimized survivability, you should have no problem committing to the additive damage increase from Strongarm Bracers Strongarm Bracers — the Cyclone Strike Cyclone Strike vortex effect counts as a knock up for the purposes of the legendary affix. Nevertheless, if you feel like you are lacking Toughness you can consider Spirit Guards Spirit Guards to multiply your damage reduction by 40% for 3 seconds after using a Spirit Generator — functionally a permanent bonus for this primary-spamming build.

The general recommendation for the weapons is a Pig Sticker Pig Sticker plus Solanium Solanium combo. Pig Sticker Pig Sticker is sought after for its high attack speed (due to its Dagger subtype) and ability to roll five affixes — allowing for Dexterity, Vitality, Attack Speed, Cooldown Reduction AND Life per Hit (if the damage range gets rerolled, which you do not need as a support). It is ideally paired with Solanium Solanium, whose Health Globe on Crit bonuses will feed nicely into Globe-reliant bonuses for your DPS teammates, such as the Gruesome Feast Gruesome Feast passive for Witch Doctors. Alternatively, you can equip the Istvan's Paired Blades set — the two swords Little Rogue Little Rogue and The Slanderer The Slanderer. While depriving you of the Solanium Solanium globes, these weapons will sync with the overall goals of the support Monk — enduring the frontline and attacking as fast as possible to output heals — by supplying you with 30% Armor and Attack Speed when fully stacked.

7. Gems

Your three jewelry sockets will be taken up by the legendary gems Esoteric Alteration Esoteric Alteration, Gogok of Swiftness Gogok of Swiftness, and Gem of Efficacious Toxin Gem of Efficacious Toxin.

  • Esoteric Alteration Esoteric Alteration is one of the strongest sources of elemental mitigation, bringing a welcome Toughness improvement to this frontline build. Improving your elemental resistances with every gem level, as well as providing you with a near-impenetrable last line of defense through the level 25 property, Esoteric Alteration Esoteric Alteration pulls you through the vast majority of elite affix damage spikes. While Esoteric Alteration Esoteric Alteration is the general recommendation for the slot, you might need to swap it out for Iceblink Iceblink, if the other support has not taken the gem. Iceblink Iceblink serves a twofold purpose: first, it adds a potent, scaling slow effect to the short freeze of Tsunami Tsunami; and second, it offers a reliable source of 10% additional party-wide Crit Chance through its level 25 property.
  • Gogok of Swiftness Gogok of Swiftness synergizes well with the build, indirectly providing the entire party with more survivability by increasing your essential Cooldown Reduction, as well as substantial personal Toughness from the Dodge bonuses.
  • The recommended gem for your third and final jewelry slot is Gem of Efficacious Toxin Gem of Efficacious Toxin, for the party-wide damage increase against — and reduced damage from — enemies affected by its poisonous DoT.

8. Kanai's Cube

The Kanai's Cube recommendations are as follows: Flying Dragon Flying Dragon for the weapon slot, Leoric's Crown Leoric's Crown for the armor slot, and Ring of Royal Grandeur Ring of Royal Grandeur for the jewelry slot.

  • Cubing the Flying Dragon Flying Dragon provides you with one of the strongest weapon procs in the game: a chance to double your attack speed with a separate multiplier, an incomparable bonus for a build that benefits so much from IAS.
  • As previously mentioned, Cooldown Reduction is in high demand, and no other item does CDR better than Leoric's Crown Leoric's Crown. Essentially doubling the effect of the gem slotted in your helm, a cubed Leoric's Crown Leoric's Crown will provide you with 25% Cooldown Reduction from a Flawless Royal Diamond Flawless Royal Diamond. If you go for the Exploding Palm Exploding Palm variation of the build however, you will have to lose the Leoric's Crown Leoric's Crown CDR utility in favor of the damage debuff-spreading Gungdo Gear Gungdo Gear.
  • The final item that binds the amalgam of sets together is the Ring of Royal Grandeur Ring of Royal Grandeur. The ability to run with full set bonuses and synergistic rings for your purposes, dodging the undesirable guaranteed stats on the Grandeur altogether by cubing its power, is a tremendous boost to the build.
