Anime Trending recently sat down with Final Fantasy XIV localization supervisor and director Michael-Christopher Koji Fox and global community producer Toshio “Foxclon” Murouchi at Otakon in Washington, D.C., to discuss the upcoming Evercold expansion. Among the highlights of the interview were changes to dialogue, challenges with the Evangelion collab, and more. Here’s what we found the most interesting.
Localizing the Evercold Language

Many facets of Evercold are heavily inspired by Norse mythology. Fortunately, the FFXIV localization team had German and French teams near Scandinavia, and one of their translators knew a professor in Iceland who also knew Japanese, Michael-Christopher Koji Fox said. The team had worked with language professionals while making Dawntrail to create an authentic experience as well.
The language in Evercold, being very difficult and based on Norse mythology, posed unique challenges in how words were pronounced and even spelled. “How are you going to represent the thorn (Þ) letter?” Fox posed as one example.
Toshio Murouchi continued, saying that dealing with Evercold names and terms was “much harder” than dealing with tribal names and location names in Dawntrail.
A More Authentic Dialogue Experience

According to Fox, character feedback in Evercold will depend on which areas you’ve completed. For example, if you’ve completed Area B and talk to an NPC, the response you receive will change depending on whether you visited Area C or Area D or neither area.
While this is more work for the FFXIV team, it means that the game will feel more real. Choosing one option over another will mean something and not be just a “gimmick,” Fox said.
The splits in dialogue will make the experience of talking to other characters more authentic. As Fox pointed out, if an NPC starts talking about something that happened in an area you’ve been to, you’ll feel as if they really know what’s going on.
Excitement for Evolved Mode

An Evercold update that many FFXIV players are eager to check out is the new Evolved mode. This mode will allow players to activate multiple actions with a single button. Controls can get complex as each expansion adds new actions, and Fox says that combat will be more streamlined. This is great news, especially for newer Warriors of Light overwhelmed by the number of buttons in their hotbar.
So far we’ve seen only Paladin, Dragoon, White Mage, and Bard demonstrated in Evolved mode. However, Fox says that a future “Letter from the Producer” will showcase every other remaining job.
Evangelion Collab Challenges

Fox said in the AniTrendz interview that the FFXIV team hadn’t officially started work on the Neon Genesis Evangelion crossover. He did emphasize the importance of approaching the localization efforts and respecting both FFXIV and Evangelion communities.
He continued, saying that not forcing FFXIV onto Evangelion and respecting what Evangelion fans expect was the main challenge.
“We have to make sure they have a similar experience in FFXIV and that they’re not saying, ‘Oh, this doesn’t feel like Evangelion.’ That would be the worst thing,” he said.
Game director Naoki Yoshida (Yoshi-P) is a huge Evangelion fan, and Fox said that because of this, they have no margin of error.
“Now It’s Our Turn”

FFXIV players are undoubtedly looking forward to changes in the housing system in the Evercold expansion. While Murouchi had to stay somewhat mum, he did say that during the press conference in Berlin, the folks at Blizzard claimed that the housing system in World of Warcraft was “very luxurious” and better than the one in FFXIV.
“Now it’s our turn,” Murouchi said, continuing that they were referencing WoW’s housing system and bringing in elements from the other big MMO.
What Collabs Do They Want to See?

When asked about collabs they’d personally like to see, Fox replied that the Dr. Pepper collab in Germany was peak and that he still had the soda cans. He also said that he wished that the collab would return someday.
Murouchi mentioned that FFXIV had a beer collab but that it was a Japan-exclusive event. What was particularly interesting was that Fox and Murouchi got to design the beer. Apparently, one can go to Akihabara and buy it!
They also expressed interest in doing a beer collab in the U.S. with American breweries and expand to cider.
“I would personally do quality control for everything!” Fox quipped. 🍻
