WoW’s Player Housing system is gaining “immense respect”, with another MMO set to take notes!
During a press Q&A at Final Fantasy XIV Fan Fest Berlin, Game Producer and Director Yoshi-P was asked about the future of FFXIV’s housing system. Yoshi-P was quick to bring up WoW’s Player Housing system, praising it as a valuable source of research for the FFXIV team.
“I got hands-on with the WoW housing system myself, and I really do appreciate it. It’s amazing.”
It is no secret that Blizzard took huge inspiration from FFXIV when designing their own Player Housing system, taking elements that frustrated players and ensuring they would not also be present in WoW.
While Player Housing is nothing new to FFXIV, the system has long been criticised for its complicated UI and limited accessibility. However, Yoshi-P confirmed that the team is planning “two very big overhauls for housing” in Evercold—the game’s next expansion. The first of these updates will be a UI overhaul, but Yoshi-P stayed tight-lipped about the second big change, teasing that it is something players have asked for.
It is interesting to see the relationship between the two biggest subscription MMOs evolve. Rather than simply competing, both games have frequently taken inspiration from each other—and this time, WoW’s Player Housing seems to have truly impressed.
But Blizzard isn’t getting complacent, with plenty of exciting new Player Housing updates coming with Patch 12.1. We’ll be getting Artisanal Room Plans, Blueprints (import/export feature), and we’ll finally be able to bring our pets home!
