New to Frost DK

12 posts in this topic

So i am new to a DK, and I am raiding as frost DW and I fell that I should be doing more dps than I am . For my rotation, I use PoF on CD, I place defile, Oblit, the once KM procs frost strike, then use howling blast when rime procs. So i think i am doing things right, but i have no clue.

Here are the links to the things I know will help.

Hi.

A couple points of improvement to be noted.

The first big one is your blood plague uptime is realllllly low, only 66%. You want to strive for 100% disease uptime. Use one of your unholy runes to cast plague strike whenever your blood plague is about to run out. The other is that you have plague leech but you only used it once. Plague leech should be used on CD to give extra runes. Now the first problem leads into the second. Without both frost fever and blood plague up you can't use plague leech. So more of fixing problem A will help fix problem B. Everything else looks pretty good. As far as your talent choices go however, I would recommend blood tap. Even though LEET players disagree with me, its really easy to macro into frost strike. As dual wield frost strike is your big hitting ability and you will be smashing it constantly so you will have more runes to work with. Last just make sure if you choose defile that the boss is marinating in it the ENTIRE duration. Seeing as you have trouble with disease upkeep I might recommend switching to necrotic plague, I prefer that even for frost just because I have a bad relationship with RNGesus. The second I drop defile even if the mechanic dictates the boss will stand there for 4 minutes straight he ends up moving on me T_T

SO TLDR version:

More blood plague uptime

More Plague leech

Recommend switch to blood tap

Make sure your bosses are well marinated and seasoned with defile

Part 2 I came back for more.

I also noticed you don't use soul reaper often or sometimes not at all. Soul reaper is our finishing move once the boss drops below 35% health. once that happens that should be your number 1 priority. You will see huge deeps increase. Also I don't see you using empower runic weapon every fight. This is a HUGE ability for us with a big CD. Cast it during the beginning of the fight when you have burned all your runes. It recovers some and gives you some runic power to boost. So you should see a lot more runes and a lot more damage.

Thank you so much for the advice, I will be trying it tonight, we will see how it goes.

I compared first four minutes of one of your attempts to another similarly geared DK.

- You had way less damage from Defile than him, try to time it on the adds, you sat on it meaning you lost dps saving it too much?

- You only cast one Soul Reaper on the add wave, and that never triggered (so you cast it way late and the add died)

- You cast similar amount of Howling Blasts, but he cast 10 more Frost Strikes compared to you

- He had 24 Obliterates while you had 18

- You had 34 Plague strikes, why? It should be pretty close to 10 casts in a 4min fight. This is pretty alarming and a big resource waste.

- You are using Runic Corruption instead of Blood Tap. You should just try to start learning it since its a DPS increase.

Consider this: Defile might not be for you, not only does it require you to think ahead and place it optimally, it also means you will have to use Plague Strike for the disease. You could try switching to Necrotic Plague and completely removing Plague Strike from your bars to bit simplify your rotation (HB will keep up NP by itself).

Doing it this way means the talent is worse than other talents in the same tier. If you don't want to think about it at all and you're thinking of macroing it, you should go with Runic Corruption.

You'll want to use BT after you have 5 stacks IF:

A: Target is below 35% and a rune is required to cast Soul Reaper

B: Defile is off cooldown and a rune is required to cast Defile

Otherwise cast BT once every time you go over 10 charges.

Oh I agree completely. It's just for a newer player its easier to do it this way and once they feel comfy doing good dps they can then min max to do LEET dps :)

Personally, I'm always of the opinion that if you're going to train yourself with bad habits to start you should just not train yourself at all.

Unlike the other talents in the tier, Blood Tap provides nothing but tines that can get you extra Howling Blast casts, meaning no unholy runes. Because you also choose when to use it, you'll never end up wasting it, and you can use it more when you find yourself with downtime and to guarantee runes for important abilities when they matter, like Soul Reaper.

Also, I recommend using Necrotic Plague unless you have exceptionally good tanks where you can consistently rely on getting every tick of every defile.

Indeed. It's also more newbie friendly and having it simplifies ST your rotation by removing three abilities from it.

1) No need to Plague Strike

2) DnD is only used with 3+ targets if they live long enough and don't move around

3) You only Outbreak for extra NP stack when you have nothing else to cast -- which for DW /w Blood Tap is pretty damn rare -- so basicly, you can pretty much ignore using it at all.
