beginner question on buyibg packs

Playing for about a week. Have unlocked all classes. Trying to get basic cards. Have bought a couple classic packs. If I were to invest in a bunch of packs, should I focus on classic or the new expansion cards?

Definitely classic (as opposed to GvG) packs to begin with.

If your goal is to build viable decks for ranked play then I think Classic packs will be more helpful than The Grand Tournament packs. Most decks in the current meta are built from Classic packs (the exceptions being mech decks using GvG packs). This may change, at least temporarily, as a lot of people experiment with The Grand Tournament cards, but the long-term effect of TGT is still unknown. So if you don't have a lot of money to invest in the game then I think TGT is a bit of a risk, while Classic packs will definitely help you build some good decks.  

 

That said, if your goal is to get the most cards for your money you may want to take advantage of the one-time-only deal for pre-purchasing The Grand Tournament. If you end up playing Hearthstone for a long time then you'll eventually want TGT cards anyway. Especially if money isn't an issue and you are able buy some Classic packs in addition to the pre-purchase, then I would at least consider it. Getting 50 packs for $50 USD is a pretty good deal.

 

An even better deal is to use Amazon coins if able. Right now you can buy $50-worth of Amazon coins for only $40, effectively meaning you can get the 50 TGT packs for only $0.80 per pack. Plus you get bonus coins when you make the purchase which can be used toward future card purchases. I'm planning to do this myself.

Try to find a deck you want to build and buy packs accordingly to missing cards. If you don’t have a "dream deck", buy classic packs since most of the decks use mainly classic cards.

Maybe use a cheap deck from this site and buy packs that you need to build it. You will need a few GvG cards, but almost all cards are from classic packs.
