Frost Mage new Mastery

4 posts in this topic

Hi guys in the new PTR Patchnotes from 24th of July Blizzard presented a change on the mastery of Frost Mages.

It goes like this:

Mastery: Frostburn has been replaced by Mastery: Icicles. When the Mage damages an enemy with their Frostbolt, and Frostfire Bolt (14% + 1.75% per Mastery) of the damage done is stored as an Icicle for 15 seconds. Mastery: Icicles also increases the Water Elemental’s Water Bolt damage by (14% + 1.75% per Mastery). Up to 5 Icicles can be stored at once. Casting Ice Lance launches all stored Icicles at the target.

What do you think how benefical will it be for us mages? because it just proccs from frostbolt and frostfire Bolt it don't seem to be that good because the frostbolt doesn't hit that hard. Because of the frostfirebolt in there it seems like we will have to watchout for haste breakpoints for new bomb ticks to increase the proccrate of brain freeze.

What do you think about that?

It's looking good on ptr currently. Frost is holding it's own with fire and arcane (well it's within a reasonable range). They are constantly tweaking though, so nothing solid yet.

No need to worry about haste breakpoints. Brain Freeze procs scale linearly with haste across all bomb choices, so it's of no concern (yet Posted Image ).

oh ok thought the chance of brain freeze proccs is only avaiable if brain freeze does its tick dmg so gettin to haste breakpoints for an extra tick would be good because nethertempest and living bomb don't have the same breakpoints.

Oh ok got it the procc chance isn't the same for all bombs so it isn't the amount of ticks that will influence the proccrate

There is a great discussion on MMO Champ about how Brain Freeze procs work if you are interested http://www.mmo-champion.com/threads/1302459-Frost-Haste-Caps-amp-You-Quick-Guide. Warning it's long Posted Image. Getting to haste break points can gain you global cooldowns which can be a dps increase (especially on multi target fights like council).

The somewhat simplified explanation is this (and note i'm using some fictional numbers here just to demonstrate the math):

If you had 0 haste you would get 12 ticks on Nether Tempest over 12 seconds.

At 1793 haste you would get 12 ticks on Nether Tempest over 11.5 seconds (the dot time length reduces)

at 1794 haste you would get 13 ticks on Nether Tempest over 12 seconds.

So as you stack haste the frequency of your ticks grows in a linear fashion.
