Protection Warrior Threat Issues Post 6.0

Recommended Posts

Hello all and thanks for reading,

I'm making this post as a concerned Protection Warrior in the face of Threat Generation. I am not certain if I am just doing something wrong as of 6.0 or not.

Prior to 6.0 I was consistently top threat no matter what, I even had to be careful when tanking alongside other tanks, as I would easily rip aggro right back after they had taunted, and consistently be near 3-5% of ripping it off of them while they were actively tanking even without any vengeance.'

As of 6.0 I am in a reverse situation but amplified.

When tanking along DKs and Druids I am very easily out-threatened. (I have not yet tanked along a Paladin, Warrior or Monk as my guild does not run those classes in Tank Roles)

I am doing similar rotations to what I was doing before 6.0, I keep my DR up at all times when actively tanking, I primarily focus on using skills in the priority of Shield Slam > Revenge = Heroic Strike (Proc'd) > Devestate

Has anyone else been having severe threat issues or I am doing something wrong since 6.0?

(when tanking against a DK or Druid, or perhaps other class as well)

Thanks.

I really haven't been having any threat issues myself, unless I'm ripping threat off of people. I also haven't tanked with a druid or DK yet. However, I don't anticipate any particular issues. What does your gear look like? What talents are you running?

I am 580 and Prioritizing Mastery, I hardly think it is a gear issue.

My Standard Talents other than obvious choices are

Heavy Reprecussions

Shockwave

Bloodbath

Shockwave is a sub-optimal choice unless you are in need of the stun. Dragon Roar does roughly 3.5 times the damage of Shockwave, meaning that even if you're hitting three targets every time, you'll still do more with Dragon Roar even before considering the two extra lost GCDs of Shockwave. For your t3 talents, Heavy Repercussions works, but Sudden Death does better damage. Unyielding Strikes does more damage depending on when you're using it and requires you to put a lot of rage into it in order to make it do good damage.

I don't see any issues with the priority you've stated. If you're still having issues, you may want to consider switching to a crit-focused build. Mastery is better for smoothness, but crit performs better in total damage reduction and damage output. You'll be more spiky, but you may have a better time with threat.

If you send me some logs, I can look through those and see if I can find anything else.

The threat thing is going to be an ongoing issue because of our highest quality-of-life upgrade:  The loss of Vengeance.

Vengeance created a mechanic that allowed the currently active tank to generate significantly more aggro than the inactive tank.  However, currently on live, all tanks have identical threat generators.  Therefore, whichever tank deals the most damage (and thusly generates the most threat) will always rip aggro.  The threat requirement to break aggro while in melee with the target is 110%, so, if one tank generates 111% the DPS of their cotank, they will always peel over time.  This is not only symptomatic of gearing discrepancies, but also of the fact that tank DPS is in no way balanced on live for lvl 90 tanks.  Blood DK output is superior to some DPS classes, Bears run about par to DPS, Warriors seem to be at proper 75%, and Paladins are producing much lower, maybe 40% of a DPS.  I don't know any Brewmasters to beg logs off or tank with to see how they are faring.

This is a situation I have been discussing quietly with my tanking guildmates, but the first time I saw it brought up mainstream.  Good to know I'm not going nuts.  :)

Thanks.

Yeah, there's no real issues with warriors threat atm, however tanking with a dk atm is hard, from what I hear they are basically magnets for threat right now. I've not tried on my pala as I tank alongside a BrM monk mostly, a warrior everyone and again and a Druid every now and again. The Druid is much lower ilvl (589 vs 570ish) but in AoE situations unless I was really trying to pull threat off him he would just take it all no problems (however as a pala I'm used to awful snap AoE snap aggro).

When taking with a warrior I didn't find I was ripping aggro off him overly easily.

Try mastery and Armor elixirs instread of Stam/strength flasks with strength food if you still find it hard to keep threat, it's a great damage increase and therefor threat increase and cause SoO is so face roll atm you shouldn't have stam issues!

Ps... Why do I keep finding myself on these warrior forums?!?!

I'd personally love to see a need for threat meters again. I think it'd be fantastic to have bosses not be tauntable and tank swaps mediated by the tanks' management of their threat levels.

The only time I've experienced threat issues is with my current tanking partner, who is a DK, stacking the crap out of Crit (instead of Mastery). He does absurd DPS and consequently generates absurd threat. Either way, make sure the tank you're running with is using a survivability build as opposed to a straight damage build. This late in the xpack, it's pretty common for people to just forsake doing things correctly.

I'm currently stacking crit (with a little haste to get socket bonuses).
