WW DPS Chi Explosion question!

Recommended Posts

Hey guys - first post here!

But let's cut right to it.  So right now I am experiencing that WW monks are dealing an enormous amount of dmg more than others, I have yet to be beat by someone in my heroics and the difference is so vast, I would expect us to see a nerf soon. But I do have one question, and it is based around chi explosion:

In a single target fight, I always dump with chi explosion with at least 3 chi (Generates the TEB stack) but sometimes do end up with 4 chi (grants the aoe effect) but still will cast CE with the 4 chi as you can't always successfully land on 3 chi to dump, so I essentially waste a chi doing an aoe effect on a single target fight. Question is, do you just cast CE with 4 chi and eat the lost one? Do you tiger palm then CE so you don't waste the chi, but this is kind of a waste of a global?

My single target priority is:

Tiger palm to keep up buff

RSK on CD (Keeps up Debuff)

TP and RSK Procs

FoF on CD

Chi explosion with at least 3 chi

Chi wave on CD

Multi Target:

Get out SEF

Tiger palm to keep up buff

RSK on CD (Keeps up Debuff)

FoF

CE with at least 4 chi

Chi wave

TP and RSK Procs

I was able to pull 28k on 3rd boss of heroic slag mines (single target) last night when we popped everything, but I feel like getting this CE question answered would only help!

but this is kind of a waste of a global?

This mostly.

It IMO depends on other factors also for instance, how long does tiger power have remaining? If is about to drop then yes TP then CE.

If not then the global lost by hitting TP instead of CE is probably not worth it.

You have TP procs listed higher than your FoF. I would only use TP to keep the buff up and FoF should have a higher priority provided tiger power wont drop.

Thanks! Although I suppose in a true single target raid boss I should use serenity and ascension vs chi brew and chi explosion so it may not be as big of a factor. But even on a cleave boss you have to single target at certain periods. I will take that advice!

Thanks!

It would really only ever be a waste of a global to tiger palm if you energy cap, let RSK debuff fall off, or delay your FoF. I would say it's more so a waste of a chi if you don't tiger palm in a pure single target scenario.

I have been messing around with all of the 100 talents as a WW monk. While trying to manage my chi with the chi explosion, I've found that in single target encounters it's extremely hard not to end up in a situation where you either waste chi or spend a GCD on a tiger palm when you could have normally spent it on a blackout kick. With the stat priority being what it is, getting only as much haste as you absolutely need, wasting an extra chi just to get an extra stack of brew (or wasting the 4th chi on a single target and getting no benefit) ruins your rotation because you'll suddenly be forced to jab again early without the haste to support it. Then you factor in the combo breaker, and it's a mess of confusion for me. Also, what about times when you are normally able to blackout kick 2x in a row? If you do this with chi explosion, you waste the DOT effect. Because of this, I'm just not going to use this talent. It may be good in large AOE situations, but single target it's a pain in the butt. I'd rather be able to nuke a boss than have slightly better AOE and a more difficult rotation to keep track of.

Another thing that's bugging me is that it seems like the information on icy-veins for WW is slightly out of date. I don't see the top WW monks necessarily using the talents that are suggested. But maybe that's a situational thing.

Using 4 point Chi explosion increases the damage. It's not wasted,it's just slightly more optimal to use 3 chi. How Chi explosion works is each chi gives a bonus effect AND increases the damage. If anything, look at the tooltip in Wowhead. I think it's like 50% AP or something?

CE is amazing for its double dip cleave with SEF copies stacked up and AoE and for those reasons amzing in dungeons. ST though, you should use Serenity for the massive damage and brew stack gain. If you are in a CM and cant respec and don't want to duel WW spec then using at 3 is optimal but using at 4 if you don't get the full refresh of Tiger Power by spending one is alright.
