Blizzard released a new patch for the Overwatch Beta last night, adjusting a few heroes that seemed to be a bit to powerful after the big rework over the break.


According to the Developer Update in November, the design goal for the rework for both Bastion and Torbjörn was to make them less frustrating to play against for players with less experience while making them viable in high end competitive games. While we did see Bastion and Torbjörn indeed included in competitive play in the last week, they did feel even stronger on public and extremely frustrating to play against without a coordinated team.

In order to adjust both Heroes to a level that matches the original design philosophy Blizzard felt it was needed to release a small balance patch.

General:


Miscellaneous

  • Completed a tuning pass for end-of-match commendations
  • Increased the cooldown on using Voice Lines

Hero Balance Changes:


Bastion

  • Configuration: Recon
    • Maximum weapon spread decreased by 25%
  • Configuration: Sentry
    • No longer gains any armor bonus
    • All changes to bullet damage made in our February 9 beta patch have been reverted
Developer comments: We’ve given Configuration: Recon a bit of a boost to allow Bastion to “run-and-gun” more efficiently when needed. We’ve also made significant changes to Bastion’s survivability and offensive capabilities when in Configuration: Sentry. By removing the 300 additional armor, Bastion is now more vulnerable to attack; however, its overall damage output has been increased (as a result of reverting earlier nerfs to sentry bullet damage). We’re very eager to see how both of these updates play out in the beta. 

D.Va

  • D.Va’s mech is no longer move- or aim-locked after being called down
  • Self-Destruct
    • Ultimate charge now generates passively even when D.Va is dead or her mech is destroyed
  • Call Mech
    • Ultimate cost decreased by 20%
Developer comments: The changes we made to how heroes gain Ultimate charge in the February 9 beta patch had some unintended side effects for D.Va, making it much harder for her to generate Ultimate than before. These changes should help correct this pain point, as well as provide a nice quality-of-life change to the process of summoning her mech. 

Mei

  • Endothermic Blaster
    • Alternate Fire
      • Ammo cost decreased from 50 to 40
Developer comments: The goal of this small change is make it so that using Mei’s alternate fire doesn’t feel like it’s compromising her primary fire.

Mercy

  • Guardian Angel
    • Can no longer target the souls of dead allies
Developer comments: The change we made to Guardian Angel in the February 9 beta patch (allowing the ability to target the souls of dead allies) was intended to help Mercy get to where her Resurrect may be the most needed. In practice, this change caused problems. We saw a lot of feedback from players noting that they’d accidentally target a dead ally when they meant to target a living ally, or that they’d target a dead ally thinking it was a living ally initially. As a result, we’ve reverted the original change. 

Torbjörn

  • Turret bullet damage decreased from 16 to 14
  • Turret repair amount decreased from 100 to 50 health per swing
  • Rivet Gun
    • Maximum ammo decreased from 20 to 18
  • Alternate Fire
    • Cost decreased from 5 to 3
Developer comments: Torbjörn’s turrets currently feel a little too powerful, so (to start) we’re taking away some of their power as well as removing Torbjörn’s ability to out-repair reasonable incoming damage. Torbjörn’s Rivet gun is also getting a small boost to allow for more liberal use of his Alternate Fire when needed.

Bugfixes


General

  • Fixed several in-game locations in which it was possible to use Tracer’s Blink ability to exit intended play space
  • Fixed an issue when blue-colored effects would sometimes get “stuck” on screen
  • Fixed a crash that could happen when opening Loot Boxes
  • Fixed several client- and sever-side crashes

Heroes

  • Fixed an issue that caused Zenyatta to receive more credit than intended for kill assists when determining Play of the Game

Spectating

  • Projectiles will now appear to line up more correctly with targets when viewing a player in Spectator Mode

After some players pointed out that the change to Mercy in this patch is not a quality of life change, but rather another nerf, the Game Director of Overwatch, Jeff Kaplan, quickly clarified on the forums that the changes on Mercy will likely be reverted soon.

We'll probably revert the change to allow you to use Guardian Angel to target corpses. We thought we were making a quality of life adjustment based on feedback. The intention was not to nerf Mercy.

      Overwatch is about to experience its very first Christmas next week and some primary info on the event has already surfaced.
      The Christmas Spirit will grace the world of Overwatch with its presence next Tuesday the 13th of December, as it was confirmed earlier today on Twitter.
      Placeholder for tweet 806196531795673088 French site JudgeHype has done some digging and has datamined some first details on this upcoming event. First of all, there will be a special Christmas-themed weekly Brawl, while one to three maps will probably feature festive decorations. All heroes will receive a new emote, spray and voice line, as well as one or two skins, emotes and highlight intros. Lastly, Torbjorn is probably getting a Santa skin, along with a respective emote and highlight intro.
      Hopefully we will know more about the even soon! Are you looking forward to it?

      Overwatch won the Best Game of the Year award. Other nominees included Titanfall 2, Doom, Inside and  Uncharted 4: A Thief's End.

      The second award for Best Game Direction was won by Blizzard for Overwatch. Other nominees were Dice, Naughty Dog, id Software and Respawn.

      The third season of Overwatch competitive play has gone live and brought with it some changes in they way skill rating is calculated, and there was also a smaller patch with just bug fixes deployed earlier today. You can check out both below:

      Season 3 has begun! Before you crack your knuckles and kick off your placement matches, here’s a quick overview of what's new in Competitive Play.

      If you’re an avid player, you undoubtedly noticed that Competitive Play wasn’t completely disabled when Season 2 ended last week. Instead, it was replaced with an Off-Season mode, which allows you to continue using the Competitive Play ruleset without your skill rating being affected.

      This gives everyone the freedom to break away from the meta and experiment with new hero combinations and strategies without having to worry about being moved to a lower tier. Players in the Diamond, Master, and Grandmaster tiers can also take a week-long breather and avoid any skill rating decay.
      We’re expecting each off-season to last about seven days, after which everyone will need to complete their placement matches for the new season.

      After giving the Skill Rating system a major overhaul in Season 2, we noticed both the Gold and Platinum tiers were significantly overpopulated. This meant that some players were initially achieving inappropriately high skill ratings and then experiencing a downward adjustment within the first few matches of the season. This also meant that competition within the Gold and Platinum tiers could vary widely from match to match.

      To address these issues, we’ve made some slight adjustments to the Skill Rating system—and, as a result, skill ratings will be more widely distributed across all tiers for Season 3. Many players will be ranked lower than expected after their Season 3 placement matches; however, this should normalize as the season progresses.

      Now that you're up to speed on the latest changes to Competitive Play, it’s time to put your skills to the test! Season 3 is live right now on PC, Xbox One, and PlayStation 4.

      It's time for Game Director Jeff Kaplan to discuss the very long awaited Symmetra changes, coming to the PTR soon. He talks about how situational she currently is, the long amount of time she needs to set up and more.
      But the headline is that she'll be the first OW Hero to have 2 ultimates to choose from at all times. You'll be able to toggle between the current teleporter and a shield generator that puts a substantial shield on all team mates in a large radius, ignoring line of sight. They have also recently cancelled a large graphic novel that was going to go into the backstory and founding of the Overwatch organization, saying that the story has changed since its inception. The other reason behind it might be because they want to tell that story in an actual separate game, using the Overwatch engine. With the main game being so popular, having so many well liked/loved characters and the animated shorts adding more and more backstory and character to the Heroes, it seems Blizzard may have decided to go full out and make a whole single player experience around it.
      Now, usually these job listings will at least mention the franchise they're related to, even for an unannounced project, so this could still be related to a new IP or even a first person foray into a different franchise (anyone remember Starcraft: Ghost?). In any case, Overwatch seems to be the perfect candidate, especially since Blizzard had already said there will probably be an Overwatch 2.
