Gold Making: Farming for Whelplings

Recommended Posts

19910-gold-making-farming-for-whelplings

The whelpling family are very desirable as both companions and battle pets. This guide shows you where to farm them and also provides some extra hints to maximize your profit potential!

Introduction

For those that enjoy farming for items pet farming can be a rewarding task. The drop rate for some pets can be low but offer a high price on the auction house in return.  An example of this is the whelpling family which are amongst some of my best sellers with regards to battle pets.  They are all found out in open zones which allows players to farm for them as much as they wish rather than being constrained to instances and weekly lockouts.

Within this guide I will show where to farm each of the trade-able whelpling pets and give you hints to maximize your farming potential.

Although it is entirely feasible to sell these pets at level 1, I highly recommend you quickly level them to level 25 using my garrison pet leveling guide.  This will not only increase the pets value (and your profits) but it will also increase the pets sale-ability.

You can find my garrison pet guide HERE.  Make sure you check out the "Deebs, Tyri and Puzzle" fight to help you level your pets in 5-10 minutes!

For each whelpling I will be posting an average pet price.  This value is a global average of the pet (taken at time of writing from https://wow-pets.com/) and it may fluctuate depending on your server population and region.  I will also give a comparison between the level 1 and the level 25 price.

Lastly, I recommend downloading and installing the addon Rarity.  It is by no means essential, however it useful when farming for battle pets (and also mounts).  It helps to track your total kills when farming for a particular drop, giving you an indication as to how "lucky" you are.  It is also useful in helpinf to confirm that the mobs you are killing are the correct ones.

The Whelplings

There are currently 5 trade-able whelplings in game:

Azure Whelpling

The inv_misc_head_dragon_blue.jpgAzure Whelpling can drop from all mobs in Winterspring.

Average price at level 1: 21k

Average price at level 25: 27k

Drop Chance: ~1 in 10000

Owned by ~22% of players (source)

With a low drop chance this pet can be fairly frustrating to farm, however it commands the highest price out of all the whelpling pets.  Even though all mobs have the same drop rate it is possible to increase your overall gold making potential / efficiency.  This is done through farming mobs that also drop transmog gear.  This ensures that your time is not "wasted" as you will still have items to sell if you are unsuccessful in obtaining the pet itself.

I recommend killing mobs inside the yeti cave just to the south east of Everlook (67,54) and also around Lake Kel'theril.  Both locations can yield a range of valuable items such as inv_chest_chain_07.jpgBloodforged Chestpiece, inv_chest_plate07.jpgJade Breastplate and inv_shoulder_18.jpgArachnidian Pauldrons.

Another particular mob to farm is the Shardtooth Mauler just to the north east of Everlook.  It has been rumoured that these have a chance to drop inv_pants_02.jpgGlorious Legplates.

Dark Whelpling

The inv_misc_head_dragon_black.jpgDark Whelpling drops from black whelplings in a number of different locations including Dustwallow Marsh, Wetlands and the Badlands.

Average price at level 1: 8k

Average price at level 25: 12k

Drop Chance: ~1 in 1000

Owned by ~30% of players (source)

The Dark whelpling is one of the more common whelpling drops, however it still commands quite a high price.

The whelplings outside Onyxia's Lair in Dustwallow Marsh reportedly have a higher drop rate than other areas, however the Ebon Whelp which is located in the Wetlands has a chance to drop both the Dark Whelpling and the Crimson Whelpling.  Be aware these are a little spread out so ranged attacks and a inv_eng_mechanicalboomerang2.jpgLoot-A-Rang will help speed up your farming.

Tiny Crimson Whelpling

The inv_misc_head_dragon_01.jpgTiny Crimson Whelpling drops from all mobs in the Wetlands.

Average price at level 1: 20k

Average price at level 25: 25k

Drop Chance: ~1 in 10000

Owned by ~16% of players (source)

Although each mob has the same chance to drop the whelpling there is a particular location that I recommend.  At (67,47) there are several groups of mobs with an almost instant respawn rate.  This ensures you can mass farm very quickly.  Vendor mounts such as ability_mount_mammoth_brown.jpgReins of the Traveler's Tundra Mammoth are useful as your bags will fill up quickly.  Sadly there are not many valuable items that drop from these mobs (although you will get some general cloth etc).

As above if you want to increase your chances of a pet drop the Ebon Whelp will give you a chance at the Dark Whelpling as well.

Emerald Whelpling

The inv_misc_head_dragon_green.jpgEmerald Whelpling drops from Noxious Whelp in Feralas (north west corner of the zone around 46,9).

Average price at level 1: 17k

Average price at level 25: 21k

Drop Chance: ~1 in 1000

Owned by ~22% of players (source)

These whelplings are fairly spread out so as mentioned above, utilizing ranged attacks and inv_eng_mechanicalboomerang2.jpgLoot-A-Rang will help to speed up the process.  The respawn rate can be quite low, so it is advised that you use a realm hop addon as well (such as Server Hop) to ensure you are maximizing your time.

An added bonus by farming for these pets is the potential to drop a inv_egg_02.jpgSprite Darter Egg which contains a Sprite Darter Hatchling.  These pet drops from all mobs in Feralas and can fetch anywhere from 15-20k gold.

Bronze Whelpling

The Bronze Whelpling is contained inside inv_eng_crate2.jpgTime-Locked Box and drops from Iron Horde mobs in the "updated" version of the Blasted Lands.

Average price at level 1:10k

Average price at level 25: 15k

Drop Chance: ~1 in 500

Owned by ~23% of players (source)

Like the Dark Whelpling this has quite  a high chance to drop compared to the other whelpling.  It is feasible to farm any of the Iron Horde mobs in the zone, however Okril'lon Hold has been known to be a favourite area for a number of farmers due to the fast respawn rates.

Remember the pet is contained within inv_eng_crate2.jpgTime-Locked Box and only becomes the Bronze whelpling when learned and caged.

Wrap Up

I hope you find this information useful.  Even if you do not enjoy farming the statistics above may encourage you to at least check your auction house for cheap whelplings in order to flip them.  Personally, I utilize a combination of farming, flipping and leveling to 25 to ensure I can keep my prices (and profits) to a premium!

Some of the whelplings have an extremely low drop chance, so try not to get too frustrated.  Rarity will help you to track your kills, which can be motivation or a curse depending on your outlook!

Good luck if you head out into the World to farm and let me know of any of your successes below!

We had the opportunity to attend a group interview where developers answered some interesting questions about The War Within.
Production Director Michael Bybee and Senior Game Designer Sean McCann had a lot to say during the interview, thanks to many great questions from the many WoW community figures asking them!
      Delves:
Delves will be cross-faction. There will be Warband-bound rewards from Delves. Levels and Gear: 11 difficulty tiers total, with tier 9 and above not offering any new loot, mainly for bragging rights. Tiers 1 and 2 immediately selectable, 3 at max level, 4-11 when season 1 starts. There might be higher tiers as well, some possibly with just a boos room. Included in the Great Vault; gear for Tiers 8-9 equivalent to Mythic+5. Most delves will have static maps, with the dynamic part being enemy spawns, treasures and similar. The rotation of these dynamic changes are currently on a daily basis, but that may change as it's still being decided. Unlimited entries, but restrictions on the number of rare and epic keys. No downscaling in higher tier Delves, they can be outgeared. Companions: Brann progresses up to level 50, advancements shared with your Warbound. Brann is the companion for Season 1, with different companions planned for future seasons.
      Warbands:
No account-wide gold, but you will be able to deposit your gold to the Warband bank, where other members can take it out. Double click to log in Warband chars should be available, but not 100% sure yet. No plans to add more than 4 characters in Warband screen. Unclear if there will be additional poses and other options for the Warband screen, it's still being discussed. Events
More Holiday event updates, as there is now a "Live Team" that only focuses on the ongoing events in the game, including adding new ones like Azeroth Archives. Each zone will have its own world event, and the Hallowfall one is particularly special (no details shred though). Itemization:
Discussions about Legendaries are not ready to be disclosed. Aiming to broaden the sources for acquiring class sets in The War Within. Game Mechanics and Systems:
Archaeology: Not included at the launch of The War Within. Dragonriding: Leaderboards considered for future updates but not confirmed. Professions:
NPC work orders for professions, mostly for skilling up.
      Raids and Mythic+:
Heroic week is coming back! Mythic difficulty will unlock a week after the raid releases once again. Dungeon rotations from season to season will remain, as well as adding old ones in to the rotation. Plans underway to enhance the soloability of Battle for Azeroth raids; details to be announced. Mythic system has been reset: Mythic +10 is now the starting point. Discussions ongoing for more affix combinations; no new affixes announced yet. Raid testing coming later on in the Beta. Engine and Feature Updates:
Major updates include the Warbands system and improved ocean visuals at Isle of Dorn. Overhaul of the Group Manager to simplify group coordination. Follower Dungeons available from the start for leveling, allowing dungeons to be part of the zone story; potential expansion to include Follower Raids based on player feedback. Early Access and Launch:
Set to start at the end of the week with a Tuesday game launch. New raid opening delayed to prevent early access advantages, ensuring no unfair benefits from the most expensive pre-order options. Customizations:
No new glyphs for character customization at launch, with a commitment to add more customization options throughout the expansion. An idea for sharable links/codes for transmog setups was mentioned, and while they did not confirm it was being worked on, there was a seeming hint that it may be, even with the code showing where to get parts you're missing from the transmog set. Feedback and Development:
Evaluating player feedback on Brann’s performance in Delves and overall class balance in the Alpha.

Sikran, Captain of the Sureki (no model yet)
Born into a noble family, Silkran established himself as an arrogant duelist within Queen Ansuerk's court. Never knowing the cut of an enemy's blade, Sikran dispatched his rivals one-by-one and was proclaimed Captain of the Sureki by the queen herself. This indomitable fighter now ensures that any who threaten the throne fall before its might.
      Rasha'nan
Twisted by Queen Ansurek's experiments, Rasha'nan was transformed from a proud nerubian into a monstrous winged horror. Trapped within her new form, shattered memories of her former self drive Rasha'nan into an unquenchable rage.

      Eggtender Ovi'nax
Deep within the bowels of the queen's palace, Eggtender Ovi'nax conducts abominable experiments with the black blood found in Azj-Kahet. This corpulent horror lumbers through the palace's cavernous depths, regurgitating inky sludge onto hatchlings to observe its gruesome effects.

      Nexus-Princess Ky'veza
Nexus-Princess Ky'veza arrived at Nerub-ar Palace only recently, quickly establishing herself as a confidante of Queen Ansurek. Yet, these two powerful nerubians harbor a hatred for each other even more powerful than their loyalty to the throne. While unleashing their considerable strength onto their enemies, each is also fighting to ensure their counterpart does not survive.

      Queen Ansurek
After a revelation of traitors in her court, Queen Ansurek decides she must eradicate the palace's invaders herself. However, paranoia over whom she can trust gnaws at her psyche.
