wow Gold Making: Farming for Whelplings

1 post in this topic

The whelpling family are very desirable as both companions and battle pets. This guide shows you where to farm them and also provides some extra hints to maximize your profit potential!

For those that enjoy farming for items pet farming can be a rewarding task. The drop rate for some pets can be low but offer a high price on the auction house in return.  An example of this is the whelpling family which are amongst some of my best sellers with regards to battle pets.  They are all found out in open zones which allows players to farm for them as much as they wish rather than being constrained to instances and weekly lockouts.
Within this guide I will show where to farm each of the trade-able whelpling pets and give you hints to maximize your farming potential.
Although it is entirely feasible to sell these pets at level 1, I highly recommend you quickly level them to level 25 using my garrison pet leveling guide.  This will not only increase the pets value (and your profits) but it will also increase the pets sale-ability.
You can find my garrison pet guide HERE.  Make sure you check out the "Deebs, Tyri and Puzzle" fight to help you level your pets in 5-10 minutes!
For each whelpling I will be posting an average pet price.  This value is a global average of the pet (taken at time of writing from and it may fluctuate depending on your server population and region.  I will also give a comparison between the level 1 and the level 25 price.
Lastly, I recommend downloading and installing the addon Rarity.  It is by no means essential, however it useful when farming for battle pets (and also mounts).  It helps to track your total kills when farming for a particular drop, giving you an indication as to how "lucky" you are.  It is also useful in helpinf to confirm that the mobs you are killing are the correct ones.

The Whelplings

There are currently 5 trade-able whelplings in game:

Azure Whelpling

The inv_misc_head_dragon_blue.jpgAzure Whelpling can drop from all mobs in Winterspring.
Average price at level 1: 21k
Average price at level 25: 27k
Drop Chance: ~1 in 10000
Owned by ~22% of players (source)
With a low drop chance this pet can be fairly frustrating to farm, however it commands the highest price out of all the whelpling pets.  Even though all mobs have the same drop rate it is possible to increase your overall gold making potential / efficiency.  This is done through farming mobs that also drop transmog gear.  This ensures that your time is not "wasted" as you will still have items to sell if you are unsuccessful in obtaining the pet itself.
I recommend killing mobs inside the yeti cave just to the south east of Everlook (67,54) and also around Lake Kel'theril.  Both locations can yield a range of valuable items such as inv_chest_chain_07.jpgBloodforged Chestpiece, inv_chest_plate07.jpgJade Breastplate and inv_shoulder_18.jpgArachnidian Pauldrons.
Another particular mob to farm is the Shardtooth Mauler just to the north east of Everlook.  It has been rumoured that these have a chance to drop inv_pants_02.jpgGlorious Legplates.

Dark Whelpling

The inv_misc_head_dragon_black.jpgDark Whelpling drops from black whelplings in a number of different locations including Dustwallow Marsh, Wetlands and the Badlands.
Average price at level 1: 8k
Average price at level 25: 12k
Drop Chance: ~1 in 1000
Owned by ~30% of players (source)
The Dark whelpling is one of the more common whelpling drops, however it still commands quite a high price.
The whelplings outside Onyxia's Lair in Dustwallow Marsh reportedly have a higher drop rate than other areas, however the Ebon Whelp which is located in the Wetlands has a chance to drop both the Dark Whelpling and the Crimson Whelpling.  Be aware these are a little spread out so ranged attacks and a inv_eng_mechanicalboomerang2.jpgLoot-A-Rang will help speed up your farming.

Tiny Crimson Whelpling

The inv_misc_head_dragon_01.jpgTiny Crimson Whelpling drops from all mobs in the Wetlands.
Average price at level 1: 20k
Average price at level 25: 25k
Drop Chance: ~1 in 10000
Owned by ~16% of players (source)
Although each mob has the same chance to drop the whelpling there is a particular location that I recommend.  At (67,47) there are several groups of mobs with an almost instant respawn rate.  This ensures you can mass farm very quickly.  Vendor mounts such as ability_mount_mammoth_brown.jpgReins of the Traveler's Tundra Mammoth are useful as your bags will fill up quickly.  Sadly there are not many valuable items that drop from these mobs (although you will get some general cloth etc).
As above if you want to increase your chances of a pet drop the Ebon Whelp will give you a chance at the Dark Whelpling as well.

Emerald Whelpling

The inv_misc_head_dragon_green.jpgEmerald Whelpling drops from Noxious Whelp in Feralas (north west corner of the zone around 46,9).
Average price at level 1: 17k
Average price at level 25: 21k
Drop Chance: ~1 in 1000
Owned by ~22% of players (source)
These whelplings are fairly spread out so as mentioned above, utilizing ranged attacks and inv_eng_mechanicalboomerang2.jpgLoot-A-Rang will help to speed up the process.  The respawn rate can be quite low, so it is advised that you use a realm hop addon as well (such as Server Hop) to ensure you are maximizing your time.
An added bonus by farming for these pets is the potential to drop a inv_egg_02.jpgSprite Darter Egg which contains a Sprite Darter Hatchling.  These pet drops from all mobs in Feralas and can fetch anywhere from 15-20k gold.

Bronze Whelpling

The Bronze Whelpling is contained inside inv_eng_crate2.jpgTime-Locked Box and drops from Iron Horde mobs in the "updated" version of the Blasted Lands.
Average price at level 1:10k
Average price at level 25: 15k
Drop Chance: ~1 in 500
Owned by ~23% of players (source)
Like the Dark Whelpling this has quite  a high chance to drop compared to the other whelpling.  It is feasible to farm any of the Iron Horde mobs in the zone, however Okril'lon Hold has been known to be a favourite area for a number of farmers due to the fast respawn rates.
Remember the pet is contained within inv_eng_crate2.jpgTime-Locked Box and only becomes the Bronze whelpling when learned and caged.

Wrap Up

I hope you find this information useful.  Even if you do not enjoy farming the statistics above may encourage you to at least check your auction house for cheap whelplings in order to flip them.  Personally, I utilize a combination of farming, flipping and leveling to 25 to ensure I can keep my prices (and profits) to a premium!
Some of the whelplings have an extremely low drop chance, so try not to get too frustrated.  Rarity will help you to track your kills, which can be motivation or a curse depending on your outlook!
Good luck if you head out into the World to farm and let me know of any of your successes below!

The boss has been found and killed! See how to do it yourself as well as a mount pic and boss fight video.
Update 2: ZosynPriest has discovered Nightbane is a timed event, similar to Zul'Aman. Once you enter the instance, you'll have a fixed timer, indicated by the "The strange chill of a dark presence winds through the air" emote and from that moment you have exactly eight minutes to finish the Opera event and click Soul Fragment.
Failing the Event gives you the following emote: "The air grows slightly warmer".
After collecting the first fragment, you will get a buff Medivh's Echo, which is now your new timer.

You can gain +5 minutes for every fragment you collect.
1 is in Opera audience 1 before the Maiden of Virtue 1 after killing Moroes 1 in the Spider Room 1 after Curator When you manage to complete it in time, your buff will change to Medivh's Presence. Go to Nightbane's room and talk to Medivh. It awards the One Night in Karazhan and he will summon Nightbane for you. After wipes Nightbane won't despawn.
Update: It seems some players have already summoned Nightbane. Observing the player's armory he doesn't have the last boss achievement. Maybe he finished the quest line already by switching lockouts.
My theory was that Nightbane became available during the final part of the quest. Why? Look at the list of the following items. All are a requirement for the above quests and guess what? The items are always +1 by ID and go from first to last (all are quest items related to Karazhan ring quest line).
Empty Box of Motivator Crystals Box of 'New' Horseshoes Bouquet of Roses Positive Review Negative Review Negative Review Little Red's Cape  Charred Bone Fragments (party loot) start the following quest that isn't in-game yet. We'll probably assemble Nightbane from the bone fragments -> Nightbane Transform.
Remember the Violet Seal of the Archmage? New versions of the old Karazhan ring have been added. They can be obtained through a series of quests that might lead to Nightbane
There are four versions of the ring ranging from item level 850 up to 875.
Violet Seal of the Archmage Fragments of the Past need to be completed to get the initial version of the ring. Violet Seal of the Archmage Complete Book Wyrms followed by Rebooting the Cleaner to get the first ring upgrade. Violet Seal of the Archmage Now for the third upgrade there are no quests in any databases. I fiddled around with in-game linking and found two more quests, which will likely upgrade the ring to its 860 version.
The horseshoes can be a drop from Attumen or Midnight.

Violet Seal of the Grand Magus The last ring has the same item level as Nightbane loot and offers a teleport to Karazhan on a 4-hour cooldown. I assume it's the final reward after defeating Nightbane.

2 days, 2 hotfixes, with relatively minor changes, but Warlocks can now be Warlocks again and enslave demons above level 109! And, as usual with hotfixes there is one "finally, why did it take them this long!" in here as well, as we'll stop getting as many follower item level missions if we have all of them maxed out on ilevel!
      October 26th
      Death Knight
Fixed a bug that caused Dark Transformation to not trigger some additional effects, and not correctly transform abominations into flesh golems. Druid
Fixed a bug where Shred could sometimes fail to deal damage or generate combo points. Full Moon is again in the Arcane school. Hunter
Bestial Fury will correctly increase Bestial Wrath's damage bonus to your pet and Hati. Warlock
Enslave Demon can correctly target enemies up to one level above the caster. Class Halls
Missions will be less likely to offer follower armor set items to players that have maxed out the item level of all their champions. Items
The legendary Rogue ring Insignia of Ravenholdt should now be able to hit creatures with large hitboxes. The legendary Warlock belt Power Cord of Lethtendris should no longer incorrectly have a chance to be activated by targets that already have Unstable Affliction. PvP
      Honor Talents
Thorns now has a 1 second cooldown between procs. Quests
Killing the Waking Nightmare first during quest, "Waking Nightmares" will no longer prevent players from seeing Slumbering Nightmare. Previous hotfixes.

Cleared Heroic and Normal Emerald Nightmare in the first week of it's release.
      Classes Needed:
      Balance Druid
      Shadow Priest
Always looking for exceptional DPS of any class.

      About Us:
We are a guild, made up of former members of <Red Shift> and <Casually Addicted>, on Bleeding Hollow (PvP Server on a Chicago Datacenter) that have a common goal and will do what is necessary to achieve it. We are Shifty Casuals.
We are a group of professional adults, who believe success in raiding doesn't correlate to number in days/hours you spend raiding. We are starting a fresh page within our guild history and sticking to a 3 day a week raid schedule.
We don't tolerate elitism, bigotry, misogyny or any of the like. We enjoy our calm, adult environment and have no qualms with protecting it.
We do loot council which is fair and distributes loot for the progression of the raid as a whole and not an individual player. No favoritism, no loot drama.
We have our sights set on top 100 US for Legion and are looking for like-minded individuals to join our ranks.

Raid Days and Times (All times in EST as that is our server time):
      · Tuesday 8:45pm-11:45pm
      · Wednesday 8:45pm-11:45pm
      · Thursday 8:45pm-11:45pm

      Who We Want:
Since we are reforming and building for the expansion now is a great time to get in on the ground floor and clear content with us, while prepping for the new expansion. These are some key traits that we are looking for:
      · Someone who understands that 3 nights a week raiding means that you need to bring your A-game each and every night. Attendance is expected to be near 100%. By committing to raid, you are committing yourself to our raiding schedule.
      · The ability to perform under pressure. We only recruit impressive players, and spots are always competitive.
      · Extensive class knowledge of your class. (IE: Alpha/beta testing, keeping up with theorycrafting, properly gemmed/enchanted, always be up to date on the intricacies of your class (not solely your spec(s)) and on the utility of the entire raid group.)
      · A computer that can handle 20-30 man raiding and the ability to communicate via VOIP when needed. You must have a working headset and mic, and you must be prepared to use them. We will not read chat during boss fights. Inability to give a vocal response will not be tolerated as it directly hinders progression.
      · Tough skin. We're always looking to improve ourselves as should you. Constructive criticism is encouraged, but flaming and insulting is not tolerated whatsoever.

Here are some changes that were not present in 7.1 Patch Notes.
Legion Companion app has been updated with Artifact Research. Galakras  can now be soloed. It takes only two shots from the same cannon to bring her down. Mount drops now get announced in Guild Chat. Ancient Mana Nodes in Suramar appear as blue icons. Withered J'im is now required for Unleashed Monstrosities. Funny fact, because we've got him up twice in a row by accident. Deepening Shadows animation is now purple and harder to see during the Cordana Felsong encounter. Sephuz's Secret has been nerfed. Silence or CC damage-dealing abilities will no longer proc it. Dalaran Guards will now tell you where the Transmogrifier is (same place as Enchanting). Followers can now be right-clicked and added to missions. Players can now hide their belts at the Transmogrifier. Weapons that disappeared when sheathing now appear properly. Weapon positioning for fist weapons has been improved. Items granting Artifact Power that are channeled, can be now consumed while moving. Crafted gear can now be upgraded with Obliterum up to item level 855 (up from 850). Glyph of the Blazing Savior should work now. Crystal Vials can now be purchased in stacks of 20 (up from 5). Questing
Active Quests number tracking is back! The quest at the end of the Order Hall to unlock the third relic slot has had its World Quest requirement reduced to 20 (down from 30). Class Hall Upgrades that complete a World Quest no longer count toward emissary bounty chests. Selecting the emissary icon will change maps to that specific zone, where you need to complete the World Quests. A cutscene has been added when using Flight Master's Whistle. Class Changes
      Death Knight
Wraith Walk  can now be used while dead. Druid
Travel Form has the same speed as mounts. Troll's Flight Form makes bat noises again. The Druid's Class Hall had a Mailbox added. The Order Hall set acts now as a dress, instead of chest & legs. Druids entering Suramar City now get transformed into a mana saber when shapeshifted. The same should apply for Shaman's Ghost Wolf. Mage
Teleport abilities have had icons updated. Felo'melorn's fire balls now have slightly different styles based on your Artifact appearance. They can be turned off entirely by talking to Archmage Melis. Priest
Shadowform no longer affects mounts. There's a proc icon when Holy Fire is reset. Shaman
Earthbind Totem has returned. Glyph of the Spectral Raptor now uses an updated model with more pixels! Warlock
Demonic Gateway activation & travel time decreased. Enslave Demon's cap has been decreased to 109 (down from 110). Glyph of the Voidlord now has a unique model. Contagion is now 15% (up from 12%). Casting Circle no longer grants immunity when you stand in it.

Will Nightbane be Karazhan's secret 9th boss? There's a lot of evidence.
The earlier Mount Journal entry listed the Smoldering Ember Wyrm to be a drop from Nightbane, which is a good indication that Karazhan will have an additional boss, bringing the total number of encounters to nine. The updated entry lists the Drop as "Return from Karazhan".

If you examine the journal description a little more carefully, there's mention of Arcanogos, who is none other than Nightbane.
      Possible Loot
All the instance loot starts at 855+ whereas some is listed at 875+. It seems that Nightbane will be dropping the mount, relics and a trinket.
      Nightbane Loot Tables
Assuming the dragon will drop the mount (Smoldering Ember Wyrm), Wowhead suggest the following loot:
Bones of the Restless Scale of Arcanagos Even the loot item carries the name  "Arcanogos" Searing Cinder Ethereal Urn Maybe the boss will become accessible after defeating Karazhan's final boss - Viz’aduum the Watcher. Your thoughts?
