Frost Death Knight 7.3

Recommended Posts

Hello guys, keep in mind that this guide is for pre-patch only and everything can change at any time. Also the gear list right now isn't accurate, i'd try to put a *BiS* these days. Special thanks once again to TheQ, Mini from Midwinter, Bantesaurus from Enigma and the IRC Death Knight community of #Acherus for helping me out with the Frost guide.

Thanks for being so fast on updating, really helps me as I'm brand new to DK on top of all the changes!

The guide says to have Rune of the Fallen Crusader on your main hand, is this still optimal with talents like Shattering Strikes?  Would having both weapons with Razorice not be good?

Hey Isp, double razorice is a dps loss go with Rune of Fallen Crusader in your main-hand and Razorice off-hand.

Thanks for answering my question, do you think the same will be standard in Legion, Fallen Crusader main hand, Razorice off had?

Most likely yes unless they change something with talents / artifact traits / tuning etc. I would keep the guide updated so if something changes i'd  let you guys know.

So its haste/crit are the preferred stat.  Comparing Frost DK to other class specs, this spec seems to be the only one who has a good balance on quantity (haste)  vs quality (crit) approach.  Will stick to the "machine gun" build to see how it will work for my play style

I observed some of the HFC runs with both Unholy and Frost specs, seems like Frost "machine gun spec" beats unholy on 2 target sustain cleave. Outside of that Unholy is destroying Frost for both single target and AoE. Gonna update some stuff from the frost rotations which is gonna improve the dps for 2 targets later on when i wake up. @Machine gun build i agree with you about stats like crit & haste being close to each other. I think the only boss worth using the so called *Machine gun spec/rotation* is Hellfire High Council with talents: Icy Talons, Frozen Pulse, Avalanche, Frostscythe and Glacial Advance.

Right now with current tuning is behind  Crit and Haste, yes.

It is good for aoe but you want to stack Crit and Haste over Mastery in general.

On 3T should frost or unholy pull ahead?

once you get your artifact you will have Frozen core (10%), Cold as Ice (3-6% with relics), Razor Ice are practically multi dipping your mastery to amplify your frost damage that I don't think you will be relying on mastery at all, not now nor when we get our artifact

Btw, whats the hardest hitting ability on single and multi target?, this will be my determining factor on which route to go for on the artifact.  Thanks

A lot of things can change in that one month so nothing is set in stone when it comes to stat weights and Artifact Weapon.  If tuned right Obliterate with Rime in theory should be better for single target than Frostscythe, something that should be Blizzard's intend when it comes to balancing and Frostscythe for 2 + targets with Killing Machine. I can't imagine that they would balance Frost in such a way where you want to use Frostscythe even for single target.

I Tried to play with crit and haste and just got 84k dps on dummys followed your guide complete

then i tried out mastery>crit and got 109k dps on dummys

i used Obliveratiton with 1 frost strike and got for the next 6 secounds my t18 4set bonus trigered so ist was completly useless

maybe i am doing something wrong but how is this possible

BTW i got gs 740

@aloch3 I wouldn't trust dummy dmg try in raids also the only situation where mastery is big is for AoE like i said. They haven't tuned the talents and classes to be working with t18 4p, i wouldn't pick BoS or GA for single target so that leaves you with Obliteration which you could delay if you are on a streak with 4p t18. Right now unholy is KING pretty much everywhere i'd suggest you to try Icy Talons, Frozen Pulse, Avalanche, FrostScythe and Glacial Advance for High Council, Iskar and maybe even Tyrant if you can cleave through the entire fight. Give it a try in raids and not  with dummys, make sure your stats are balanced  between Crit and Haste so you can feed up the Frostscythe with KM's, avoid dropping Icy Talons. Those 3 fights are the only ones imo you can compete with Unholy, Frost single target is garbage.

Do the artifact perks that impact Obliterate also impact Frostscythe if picked? I'd hate to pick that talent and lose the artifact perks on Obliterate

Well there are 2 artifact traits that work only  with Obliterate, 1 that works with Obliterate and  Frostscythe and rest more or less is % damage to your frost abilities. A week or two before legion i'd update the guide for the new expansion but untill then a lot can change with traits / talents / abilities. Sadly i don't really see how frost will be viable in Emerald Nightmare ( first raid instance of the expansion ) but who knows!

Here you can find Frost calculator with the traits if you need http://www.wowhead.com/artifact-calc/death-knight/frost/AgHgIMA.

The guides for the DKs (both frost and unholy) look really good, will they be getting a section like some of the other guides that state each specs strengths/weaknesses and viability?

Hey Mark we have Overview of the specs but we  can be more detailed with them  i guess. I'm thinking to add section like that for Legion, rather pointless for Pre-patch. If you want the guide to have something specific write it down and i'd try to deliver. Probably gonna make  section explaining which spec you should play for each boss in Legion or something like that, right now Unholy is just king everywhere except maybe Hellfire Council. Feedback is appreciated.

Any ideas on frost trinkets yet? I'm still rocking M DC and H EDH but Reaper's Harvest looks tempting now that I actually use obliterate. There's also unending hunger, cursed plume, chipped soul prism and maybe even skull of war.

We've entered Season 4 and the Awakened raids have arrived, as we'll be rotating through one raid a week, starting with VotI! The charts will be looking quite different week-over-week here in Season 4, so the comparisons will be a little less useful, but it's still fun to see just how much things change as we move from one raid to another.
Note: We are using Normalized scores instead of raw DPS for the Warcraft Logs rankings. The u.gg rankings at the bottom are raw DPS. Normalized scores take into account the outlier boss fights where certain specs could stack massive DPS (due to the nature of the fight, whether it's AoE spam or something else), which would then affect their overall score for the whole raid.
      Mythic
      Overall Damage 95th Percentile
As expected, we see a giant switch up from Amirdrassil as we head into the Vault, with Marksmanship coming out on top, and by a large margin, followed by Windwalker, with the two specs sticking together and rising from their previous 18th and 19th spots! Outlaw is the most stable spec, as it only drops 1 spot compared to Amirdrassil and Season 3, while Beast Mastery is the most improved, jumping from 2nd to last right into 5th, 20 spots up! The previous No.1, Subtlety, finds itself 16 spots down, with Unholy losing 13 from its old perch at No.2. Some of the more stable specs are Havoc, Arms and Frost DK. We still find Augmentation being incorrectly calculated down in the bottom 3, this time joined by Assassination, which fell off quite a bit, and Affliction, which only dropped 4 spots.

95th percentile Mythic data by Warcraft Logs.
      Overall Damage All Percentiles
Arms is doing a lot better in the generalist bracket, rising 1 from Season 3, as Outlaw falls back behind it. Shadow is also doing a little better here than in the top percentiles, in 6th, as Devastation finds itself further down in 9th, but still doing a lot better than last season. Elemental closes out the top 10, 3 spots higher than the previous week (and raid), while the bottom 3 switches out one Warlock for another.
All percentiles Mythic data by Warcraft Logs.
      Boss Only Damage All Percentiles
While it may have lost a lot in the overall damage charts, Unholy is still up there, and actually gains a spot to come out at the very top! Beast Mastery makes a giant leap here as well to land in 2nd, with Fire only gaining 2 spots in 3rd. Devastation finds itself in 6th, quite far away from its almost-bottom-3 position from S3. Speaking of the bottom, Fury drops down there from the middle of the pack, as Balance joins from even higher up, losing 16 spots between seasons/raids.
All percentiles Mythic data by Warcraft Logs.
      Heroic
      Overall Damage All Percentiles
Heroic actually remained pretty stable, despite the Season and raid change, with Arcane coming out on top and pushing Subtlety down 1, and Enhancement not even moving at all. Arms and Unholy moved up quite a bit and Marksmanship and Windwalker showed up at the end of the top 10, but those are pretty much all the major changes here.

All percentiles Heroic data by Warcraft Logs.

      U.GG Raw Mythic DPS Rankings
U.gg's rankings are based on actual DPS taken from Warcraft Logs data, focusing on the top players and span the past two weeks. This chart is for Mythic only.
Marksmanship is also dominating the raw DPS charts, but we do see Demonology come up to 2nd, much higher than in the points charts. Shadow is doing great, even sitting in front of Windwalker, with Fire being fairly stable season-to-season, same as Havoc, and Beast Mastery moving out of the bottom and right on up into 7th. Devastation breaks into the top 10, while Fury is hanging in there, losing 8 spots from its previous 2nd.
      Mythic chart by u.gg.

Meanwhile, if you're looking for more information you can check out our Dragonflight class guides, Vault, Aberrus and Amirdrassil boss guides, the raid DPS tier list, as well as more data from Warcraft Logs here.

Here comes another interesting hirumaredx video, this time focusing on very hard to obtain transmogrification cosmetic options (and the tusks didn't even make the cut)!
From the humble Apron tabard, which would take a solid couple of months to get (and which we may or may not be able to get during the Mist of Pandaria Remix event much easier), to things like the Party Sync item rewards, the Eternal Palace raid drop Pauldrons of Za'qul (which apparently won the hardest single shoulders to get award), the archaeology Zin'rokh, Destroyer of Worlds blade, the extremely involved OG Naxxramas tier 3 armor set looks, and more!

Here's a collection of hotfixes for Dragonflight, Season of Discovery and Cataclysm Classic for the past week, featuring class tuning in SoD, plenty of Season 4 fixes for retail most focused on items, and plenty more.
      Hotfixes (Source)
      Classes
Fixed a bug with damage dealt by Rip and Tear, Internal Combustion, and Tear Open Wounds in Awakened raids. Dungeons and Raids
Raid Finder now required item level 463 if the raid is Awakened. Brackenhide Hollow Addressed an issue where Stinkbreath can turn while casting Stinkbreath. Addressed an issue where Wilted Oak’s Necrotic Breath visual can be out of sync with the creature’s facing. Items
Veteran track items or items obtained from Awakened Outdoor Activities should now properly be able to be converted into Class Set items at the Revival Catalyst. Resolved multiple issues with Dragonflight Season 4 tier set items not functioning after equipping certain Season 3 set items. Dreambound gear caches from the Dreamsurge Coalesence vendor will now correctly award Season 4 Explorer 1/8 (item level 454 gear) and tokens will properly display the correct item level of its contents. Fixed an issue that prevented Tiered Medallion Setting from functioning on Season 4 necklaces. Fixed an issue preventing Season 4 crests from properly converting to their lower-tier currency. Season 3 (Dreaming) crests are now correctly removed from players’ currency tabs. Players have received a small amount of gold for their unused Dreaming Crests. Players can now earn up to 120 crests of each type per week in Dragonflight Season 4 (was a maximum of 90 per week in Season 3). This will allow for up to 8 upgrades per week, per crest type (was 6 in Season 3). Developers’ notes: For players who don’t reach their maximum crest earnings in a given week, we’ve implemented the increasing-seasonal-cap system from previous seasons. Please note that this increase is likely applicable to Season 4 only. We expect the weekly maximum to return to 90 for The War Within Season One. Quests
“A Multi-Front Battle” can now be completed. Resolved an issue where abandoning the quest “Something Worth Celebrating” could make it unavailable. Cataclysm Classic
The dates for Children’s Week have been adjusted so that the holiday begins and ends three days later than previously scheduled. Season of Discovery
Using an Unconscious Dig Rat no longer dismisses pets. Mage Displacement no longer functions if the most recent use of Blink was on a different continent or in a different instance. Players who have completed the quest “Warranty Claim” but have misplaced their Pristine G-7 C.O.R.E. Processor before handing in the quest “Salvaging the Salvagematic” may now speak with the Lost and Found vendor Rix Xizzix in Booty Bay to recover the misplaced quest item. Fixed a Sunken Temple issue where the Atal’ai Defenders encounter would not reset properly. Druid The Natural Weapons talents now increases all damage done by druids in Season of Discovery, instead of just physical damage. The Gale Winds rune now reduces the mana cost of Hurricane by 60%. Swiftmend no longer consumes a Rejuvenation or Regrowth effect on the target when used. Developers’ notes: Please note that it does still require Rejuvenation or Regrowth to be on the target to be used. Hunter Rapid Killing now reduces the cooldown of Rapid Fire by 80% (was a reduction of 2 minutes). Chimera Shot weapon damage percent increased to 135% (was 120%). Explosive Shot base damage before attack power increased by 50%. Sniper Training has an additional new effect: while Sniper Training is at 5 stacks, Aimed Shot is instant. Serpent Spread now causes Multi-shot to apply Serpent Sting to its targets for 12 seconds (was 6 seconds). Steady Shot now deals 100% weapon damage (was 75%). Developers’ notes: There are more adjustments coming for Hunters. In general, we intend to improve the ranged playstyle and diminish the melee playstyle so that the two become more equivalent. Paladin Seal of Righteousness damage can now be critical hits. Sacred Shield’s duration is extended to 60 seconds (was 30 seconds). Crusader Strike has now gained an additional effect: Crusader strike now refreshes all judgement effects active on the target to a 30 second remaining duration. Seal of Martyrdom can now “twist” with other seals, including Seal of Command. Developers’ notes: Seal twisting was an interesting emergent effect that became popular during the original Burning Crusade, that utilized the slower server messaging system used in early versions of WoW to slightly extend the duration of the paladin’s active seal for a short time whenever a second seal was cast. This effectively allowed paladins to momentarily gain the benefit of two seals at once if they timed the application of a new seal to line up perfectly just before their weapon swing. We recreated this playstyle in Burning Crusade Classic and since then it’s been a popular request in other versions of original WoW, including Season of Discovery. As the game matures and we continue to listen to player feedback however, we recognize that for some, this is part of the charm and uniqueness of playing a paladin during those early eras of WoW’s history. We consider this change to be experimental and we will watch the performance and behavior of Retribution closely after this change. Priest Shadowform now increases all shadow damage done by 25% (was 15%). Rogue Saber Slash bleed now stacks up to 5 times. Saber Slash bleed now also increases the impact damage done by Sinister Strike and Saber Slash by 15% per stack for the rogue who applied the bleed. Saber Slash bleed now deals 3% of the rogue’s Attack Power in damage per tick (was 5%). Shaman Mental Dexterity now only triggers from dealing damage with Stormstrike and Lava Lash, and it now lasts 30 seconds (was 10 seconds). Burn now increases Flame Shock Damage by 100% and flame shock DoT duration by 6 seconds, and causes Flame Shock to strike up to 5 targets (was 3 targets). Developers’ notes: We’ve received a lot of feedback about the overall usability of mental dexterity, particularly for Elemental Shamans. This ability was not intended to be used by elemental, so the adjustments we’ve made are to help ensure its usage is a bit more enhancement-centric. To compensate, we’ve increased the output and usability of the Burn rune, with a slight quality-of-life improvement in the form of a Flame Shock duration increase which allows two Lava Burst casts to be used within a single Flame Shock duration.
