hearthstone Brode on Community Feedback. Hints at Arena Changes

Lead Designer Ben Brode has replied to an open question on Reddit regarding the views of the development team on Reddit.

In a recent thread, Redditor alcxander asked:

How do you guys and gals feel when we critique the game after each release or on an on-going basis? Does this subreddit provide you a place of positive/useful critiquing?

I know pretty much everyone on the (now 70+ person!) dev team reads this subreddit pretty frequently. Personally I check it several times a day.

I love it. I love reading stories about people having fun with Hearthstone or exploring new decks. I also love finding opportunities to make the game better. I send every bug report and suggestion to the different teams responsible to make sure we are tracking them. They assure me it's redundant because they are also reading Reddit daily (and most reported bugs have already been caught by QA) but I don't want to miss anything.

Sometimes we disagree with a particular post, and one of the biggest pitfalls is believing that one person's perspective (or even a couple thousand people, in the case of a highly upvoted thread) is representative of everyone. I think it sometimes inspires fervor when people believe that everyone thinks the same thing, so how can we be deciding something different? Reddit is especially powerful at drowning out dissenters through up and down votes. And certain categories of player are just not represented here at all. That's usually irrelevant, because the feedback is helpful either way, but it can amplify a feeling of "community vs developers" which has always felt strange to me. When we go home, we play Hearthstone. We're part of the community, too. I like to feel like we're working together to make the game more awesome.

I also notice that sometimes when people don't have access to the whole picture, it can inspire an angry position. It doesn't always happen, but it comes out as: "I can't imagine any reason for you to do this. The only possible reason I can come up with is that you are bad developers, therefor that must be what is true." This is the hardest feedback for me personally to read. I'm lucky to be able to see the whole picture, so I can see the reasons behind these decisions. This phenomenon is the biggest reason I love interacting with players. I think just hearing the other side of things can take it out of that zone of "you must be idiots" to "oh they actually had reasons for this". Important to note that people often still disagree with those reasons, but it becomes an informed conversation at that point, which is awesome.

Arena Balance is one thing that has received a lot of attention recently, and has spawned a lot of discussion internally. We had plans for tools that would let us make changes in the medium-long term, but the online discussion has made us stop and rethink our timelines and options. That's honestly great. Hoping to have something to share on this in a couple weeks.

Yeah, sometimes there is negativity. But there is always something for us to learn in that, and so we come back every day, hopefully with a curious mind, hoping to find ideas that we can take back to keep making Hearthstone better.

This is another reminder that the Hearthstone development team pay more attention to the community than they often get credit for. It is also a reminder how much Brode loves this game. It is exciting to see that community feedback has hurried up the Arena change process, and of course we'll let you know what that change is as soon as we know ourselves!

      Hearthstone esports will be even bigger in 2017. Not only will there be a bigger Championship Tour, but there will be other global events as well.
      Due to the success of the 2016 Hearthstone Championship Tour (HCT), it is easy to forget that this is only the third year of competitive Hearthstone. Blizzard have been working hard on improving this for 2017, and have recently announced their plans for next year.
      The changes to the HCT itself are pretty spectacular. There will be a global Season Championship instead of regional ones, and they will be held at locations that allow spectators, rather than in a closed studio. Season Championships will include 4 players from each region (Americas, Asia-Pacific, Europe, and China). These players will be decided using regional Playoffs (to replace Preliminaries), and they will use the Swiss Tournament format. 
      The Championships will be synched with Standard. This should mean that the meta is always fresh during the Championship events, and will hopefully reward deckbuilding. Magic: The Gathering uses this format already, and it is something that should greatly benefit Hearthstone viewing. On top of these changes, points and cups have been tidied up, and the prize pool for the year has been set at $2 million.
      There will also be Hearthstone Global Games, which is a world team league featuring teams from different countries, and Inn-vitationals, which will include streamers and celebrities in a more light hearted setting.
      I think that these changes will make a huge difference to our viewing experience in 2017. What do you think? As always, feel free to comment below.

      This week's Tavern Brawl is Captain Blackheart's Treasure. It is the fourth time that this Brawl has been used.
      Captain Blackheart's Treasure was most recently used as the  63rd Tavern Brawl, in late August. This week is the 72nd Tavern Brawl, so as you can see, it is a pretty quick repeat. In this Brawl you are given a deck full of Bloodsail Raiders, and each turn are offered a choice of three cards to put into your hand.
      As always, I would remind people that I feel this is a more skillful Brawl than it first appears. It teaches a lot about planning ahead, and also tempo in general. Given that players can play this Brawl with no cards of their own, I am a big fan of this Brawl from a design standpoint.
      Captain Blackheart's Treasure was originally designed to showcase the Discover mechanic for The League of Explorers. It actually made its debut late however, as it was withdrawn due to technical issues.
