Here's the tl;dr version:

  • Average player gold was 302,593
  • Median player gold was 80,000
  • 81.63% of players survey reported bloew average gold levels
  • "The 99%" owns 74.18% of the gold

----

Hello everyone,

Many of you might not recognize me but last year I ran a World of Warcraft Wealth Survey which turned out to be so successful that I decided to do it again this year. This year not only will the survey be gauging player wealth but it will provide the second data point to start tracking inflation hopefully.

The survey is completely anonymous, not even your IP will be tracked, so you can feel safe answering all the questions as honestly as possible (there are some questions about botting that might normally give people pause). I ask everyone who takes the survey to answer as truthfully as possible, nothing is to be gained by lying about anything on the survey.

The survey can be found again at http://xsinthis.net/survey/ and more information can be found at Announcing the World of Warcraft Wealth Survey and World of Warcraft

I'd like to thank everyone in advance for taking the time to complete the survey.

Nice of you to post this here. I completed the survey. I'm at like 180k gold, which I've had since I reached the old gold cap, back in WOTLK. I guess I haven't spent a whole lot of gold during Cataclysm, busy as I was writing guides for Icy Veins :P

Took it. As someone who doesn't participate in gold making it was incredibly boring, lol

Thanks for taking it! I've been trying to get this to as many sites as possible to get the best possible array of responses.

Haha sorry, but thanks for completing it, it's incredibly important to get responses from players from every walk of WoW life!

I'm sitting pretty stable at my end of Cataclysm gold level. So far I have found the only money makers to be selling the 476 tailoring pieces. Seems like the enchanting market has been gimped with the way they did enchanting patterns and JC is overrun with sheer numbers of items. No Elemental market (Volatiles) is also hurting the AH game. Right now there isn't much other than inscription (cards) that is making enough money to justify my time. I made approximately 400k off of enchanting in cata and will have to sit tight till they make changes or I find a new niche.

Completed. Interested in these things. I never care too much about gold. Gold to me is only a means to buy mounts and pets. I never buy gear because I'd rather earn it in raiding (you can't buy heroic gear haha) and I'm self-sufficient with all professions across my account. I often use it to buy my lady pets because she enjoys the crap out of them. Other than that, just enough to cover little things like flying on every toon is really all I need it for. I have about 5-6k on each alt and 65k on my Warlock. You should think about doing a survey where people also put how much real money they make in real life...it'd be interesting to see that correlation if any exists.

    • [Gold] Garrisons
      By Archimage
So I've been watching some Youtube videos (MetaGoblin) and found several videos regarding how to make gold using your garrison in WoD and Legion, spending about 5 minutes each day per character for about 1000g per day per char.
      Section 1: Garrison Setup:
      Large Plot:
Barracks Level 3 (Simply for the +5 Follower Perk)

      Medium Plot:
      Trading Post Level 1
Lunarfall Inn / Frostwolf Tavern Level 3

      Small Plots:
Gem Boutique Level 2 (Assign Follower)
Scribe's Quarters Level 2 (Assign Follower)
      Salvage Yard Level 3 (Pre-Legion)
Alchemy Lab Level 2 (Can replace the Salvage Yard)
      Special:
Pet Menagerie Level 3 (Pet Battle Dailies)
      Shipyard Level 3
      Section 2: Followers and Missions
Using the above setup, you should have about 23 followers able to do Follower Missions. Ideally you should have followers with the Treasure Hunter trait, which can be recruited weekly from your Inn/Tavern.
The Level 3 Inn/Tavern Perk allows you to do Follower Missions that rewards gold, and with each follower doing the mission with the perk increases these rewards.
There are also some follower missions that reward a Medallion of the Legion, Champion's Honor and Ogre Cache (Resources) that can be sold on Auction House
I suggest you get the addon called Master Plan. This allows you to optimally send followers out on missions.
You can get about 200g per character per day simply doing these follower missions.
      Section 3: Shipyard
The shipyard occasionally has missions missions rewarding gold. Simply see the Icy Veins' Garrison Shipyard guide.
      http://www.icy-veins.com/wow/garrison-shipyard-complete-guide
      Section 4: Trading Post
This will allow you to trade those Garrison Resources (GR) that are automatically generated for materials. The only 2 traders you need to be using are:
Pyxni Pennypocket - Sells Herbs at a 1:4 ratio.
Trader Yula / Elder Surehide - Sells Ores and Furs at a 1:4 ratio.
      Section 5: Menagerie
      Simply see Peelyon's guide:

These reward 8-10 Pet Charms per character per day. Also in Legion, you will need about 2000 Charms to buy the new pets and toys.

      Section 6: Small Buildings
      Gem Boutique:
When you assign a follower, you can do a daily quest. These quests can be completed without having the Jewelcrafting profession by using the NPC inside the building.
      Rewards a bag containing 180-250g.
      Scribe's Quarters:
The follower can craft partial orders every day per character. Once you combine 2 partial orders of the same name it can be vendored for about 75-250g.
      Alchemy Lab:
You can craft the Draenic Philosopher's Stone simply to vendor it for 25g
      Salvage Yard:
Follower missions reward a chest that contains items which can be vendored or sold on auction house for gold. I suggest you keep all your boxes until the Transmorg/Wardrobe system is available before opening the chests so you have all the transmorgs that they will provide.
    • Strategy for Update and New Format
      By Valkyr
Hey, with the community buzzing with the latest format news, I bet it has shaken up many people's crafting, disenchanting, pack buying and gold amassing strategy. So wondering what strategy are people following? I guessing it would depend on if you plan on which format you want to play in (or if you wanna play both).

Edit: thought I'd mention some strategies I was contemplating.

      1. Collect all your gold and dust for update and then see whats what. May result in the next two months to be a bit boring and stagnant.

      2. spend gold on classic since that will remain no matter what. Any cards you get which end up being nerfed will be equal to free dust for crafting (either from classic or new set)

      3. Save gold and dust for new expansion even though it will retire in 2 years.

      4. Spend gold on GvG to complete collection or get that particular card for Wild instead of having to craft it.

      5. Get TgT since it will become relevant past update.

      What are you all thinking?
    • Casual & Hardcore WoW Survey
      By badmodem
      Hello,

I'm a lifelong Warcraft fan, player, podcaster and a professor conducting some research regarding Warcraft.

In this study we are interested in your opinions and experiences involving World of Warcraft. We will ask you a few multiple choice survey questions regarding the game, and will ask for 3-4 open ended responses regarding your experiences with other players in World of Warcraft and your feelings towards Blizzard. We don't anticipate the survey taking more than 10 minutes.

If you'd like to take the survey, here is the link: https://ohio.qualtrics.com/SE/?SID=SV_0vxEqtJHoIOxzIp

      Thanks! Jacob aka Modem

    • WoW Research Survey
      By pwn3d
Hi, I’m a doctoral student studying cultural anthropology at the University of Wisconsin at Milwaukee. My dissertation research is on social interaction between WoW players who have pre-existing relationships with each other (family, friends, etc.). Primary topics of my work are on how people “perform” those relationships in-game, and how players relate to their characters.
I’m hoping that you will give me a hand with my work by filling out a short (5-10 minute), anonymous online survey:   https://milwaukee.qualtrics.com/SE/?SID=SV_296XHEQ73Jpyk85   Even if you have only played with people you know through the game, I’d love to hear from you!   Please note: respondents must be over 18 and living in North America (or Hawaii). Apologies to folks outside that region, but the limitation is in place to make comparisons with my interview and observation data, which is taken from Americans (well, and a few Canadians).    Along with the survey, I’m looking for additional people to interview online as well. If you’d be willing to help, please send me an email at:   wowresearch.uwm at gmail dot com     Thanks, Chris   [This post was approved by Damien.]
    • Raid guide to help farm some gold
      By Razkek
Ive been asked by a few people on my stream how I always have over 26k gold in my bags. Thought I'd share a video I made to show you how exactly I make my gold. **sorry for the poor audio quality, I just got a new mic to replace it***
Basically what you want to do is farm the trash off of the first boss in the Dragon Soul raid. Make sure it is set to atleast 25 man mode. DO NOT kill the boss, as this will make it impossible to reset the raid. Hope this helps!
