1. Introduction

Hearthstone can be played without spending any real money, but by plotting out an efficient gold-grinding path, you will obtain the cards you desire much faster. In this guide we will show you a few tricks that can improve your gold farming efficiency, and help you get started with the basics.

2. How to Earn Gold in Hearthstone

There are 4 ways to earn gold in Hearthstone:

  • completing Daily Quests;
  • completing Unique Quests;
  • winning games in Play Mode;
  • playing in the Arena.

2.1. Hearthstone Daily Quests

Each day, you will receive 1 new daily quest that will be stored in your Quest Log. You can have up to 3 daily quests in your log at any time, however you will not be able to receive any new daily quests until you complete at least one of them and make space for a new quest.

Daily quests reward between 40 and 100 Gold each, and can be completed in Play Mode or in the Arena. You can not complete Daily Quests by challenging your friends, or by playing against the AI.

Once per day, you are able to replace one daily with a random other quest by pressing the small X in the upper right corner of the quest, in your Quest Log. Whenever you have a quest that does not reward 60 or more gold, you should try to replace it, since there is a chance to get a new quest that does.

Here is a list of all the Daily Quests in Hearthstone.

Name Objective Reward
Class #1 or Class #2 Victory Win 2 games with Class #1 or Class #2 40 Gold

2.3. Earning Gold in Play Mode

Winning 3 games in Play Mode awards 10 Gold, up to a maximum of 100 Gold per day. This feature is exclusive to Play Mode (both Casual and Ranked games count towards your progression), which means you will not benefit from it while playing the Arena, Practice Mode, or when challenging your friends.

2.4. Earning Gold in the Arena

The entry into the Arena costs 150 Gold (or 1.99 USD / 1.49 GPB / 1.79 EUR). Regardless of the outcome, each Arena run is guaranteed to reward 1 Card Pack. Most players invest all their hard-earned Gold in the Arena, instead of buying Card Packs in the Shop. This is because, if you are able to win at least a few games in each Arena run, you will make up your Gold's worth (or even gain rewards exceeding the entry cost). Additionally, playing the Arena improves your understanding of the game strategy and mechanics. By becoming a better player in the Arena, you will be able to get more value from your investment proportionally to the outcome of each entry.

Below, we provide a list of the rewards you stand to receive, depending on your performance in the Arena. In addition to the listed rewards, you will always receive a Card Pack, and you always have a chance of getting a random card as a reward (this card could be of any rarity, and it could also be Golden). Whenever you receive a card, this diminishes the other rewards somewhat. When we mention an amount of combined Gold and Arcane Dust, this means that the distribution of the two is not fixed. For example, if we mention that you stand to receive 50 combined Gold and Arcane Dust, this could be 50 Gold, 50 Arcane Dust, or some other combination such as 20 Gold and 30 Arcane Dust. Note that each extra win upgrades the "key" used to unlock the rewards.

Wins Key Possible Rewards
0 Novice About 25-30 combined Gold and Arcane Dust
1 Apprentice About 30-50 combined Gold and Arcane Dust
2 Journeyman About 40-50 combined Gold and Arcane Dust
3 Copper About 25-30 Gold, 25 combined Gold and Arcane Dust
4 Silver About 45-60 Gold, 25 combined Gold and Arcane Dust
5 Gold About 55 gold, and about 55 combined Gold and Arcane Dust
6 Platinum About 75 gold, and about 55 combined Gold and Arcane Dust
7 Diamond About 150-180 Gold, about 25 Arcane Dust
8 Champion About 150-220 Gold, and about 25-50 Arcane Dust
9 Ruby About 150-300 Gold, and about 25-70 Arcane Dust
10 Frostborn About 150-350 Gold, and about 25-90 Arcane Dust
11 Molten About 150-485 Gold, and about 25-90 Arcane Dust
12 Lightforge About 150-525 Gold, about 25-90 Arcane Dust, as well as possibly an additional Card Pack

2.5. Tavern Brawl

Players with at least 1 level 20 class are able to participate in the Tavern Brawl each week (Wednesday to Monday). The first successful Tavern Brawl game in any given week will reward the player with 1 Classic Card Pack.

3. Best way to get started in Hearthstone

After you have completed the tutorial, you should focus on completing easy, accessible Unique Quests.

  1. Get your Mage to level 10 (play against different classes until you win a game). This will reward you with 100 Gold.
  2. Unlock all classes (defeat each class). This will reward you with 100 Gold.
  3. Level all classes up to level 10. Doing so will reward you with 100 Gold, and you will also unlock all the Basic cards in the process.
  4. Defeat each class in Expert Practice Mode. This will reward you with 100 Gold.
  5. Play 3 games in Play Mode. This will reward you with 100 Gold and with 1 Card Pack.
  6. Enter the Arena. The first Arena entry is free.

From this point on, the only reliable sources of Gold will be winning games in Play Mode, completing Daily Quests, and participating in the Arena. Investing your hard-earned Gold in the Arena is a good choice, however you should check our Arena Guides before you do so in order to learn as much as possible from your first Arena runs and get a better reward at the end of each one.

Play Mode can award you with up to 100 Gold each day, however for that you need to win 30 games, which can be time consuming and sometimes difficult with only Basic cards. You should grind your victories with an aggro deck; Mage would be great as it is extremely easy and fast to play.

We have Basic decks listed for all the classes in the game. Using these decks will ensure that the decks you build from Basic cards (the only cards you are likely to have at this stage) are as strong as possible.
