The following guide explains a Deathrattle focused Priest deck. It is extremely versatile due to both being one of the best aggro counters available in the game, whilst also being able to compete successfully with late-game focused Control decks. It plays in a very fun, fast paced manner and is relatively simple for newer players to learn.

This Priest deck aims to get off to a fast start with early minions such as Undertaker and Zombie Chow and then carry that momentum throughout the game. It is fantastic at shutting down decks with early and consistent aggression, as well as being able to hold its own in a lot of control matchups.

The Priest Hero Power is key to enforcing and maintaining an advantage with this deck. After getting ahead on board early, you can use your Hero Power to get additional value out of your minions. This will stretch out the resources in your hand and lead to card and board advantage over your opponent. When ahead on board, the Priest Hero Power is perhaps the most powerful in the game and this deck aims to get ahead on board early, and stay there, to take advantage of this.

When deciding whether to heal a minion, always keep in mind your opponent's options. For example, Shamans excel at doing 3 damage with cards like Lightning Bolt, Rockbiter Weapon, and Fire Elemental, so healing a minion out of range of these cards can be extremely frustrating for your opponent.

Your early game turns will consist of quickly building a board using Undertaker and your early Deathrattle minions such as Zombie Chow, Loot Hoarder, and Dark Cultist. Using these minions, you can keep pace with even the fastest decks in the game such as Zoo and Hunter.

Once you have some board presence, you will look to compound an advantage by making efficient trades and healing your minions. This will create 2-for-1 scenarios and generate card advantage for you, which will be of huge significance in the later turns. If you combine this healing strategy with a Northshire Cleric the game can quickly spiral out of control in your favour.

Upon entering the mid-game, you will want to switch to a more aggressive strategy, limiting your trades and pushing through damage to your opponent. This is not an all out aggro deck however, so be sure to make efficient trades when they are available. Remember, trading your minions is vital to complement your Hero Power. Auchenai Soulpriest is a key card to facilitate this as the 2 damage Hero Power will enable you to clear minions effectively, creating more repetitive damage from your minions.

During this period, your AoE cards will come into play. Holy Nova is a powerful tool for boards that are in the balance. It enables you to attack opposing minions and then finish them off with the Holy Nova damage whilst simultaneously healing the damage you took on your own minions. On the other hand, if your opponent does manage to fight off the tempo of this deck and gains a board advantage, you have a powerful board sweep tool in the form of the Auchenai Soulpriest + Circle of Healing combo.

Despite being a fast paced deck, Deathrattle Priest is fully capable of competing in the late-game. You have some of the most powerful late-game plays in the game available to you in the form of Ysera, Cabal Shadow Priest, and Sylvanas Windrunner. Combine this further with the sustainability your Hero Power brings, both to your minions and your life total, plus your ability to cheaply deal with your opponent's late game minions with Shadow Word: Death, and you should be able to seal the game.

When making a final push for lethal damage you should keep an eye out for potential synergy plays between Auchenai Soulpriest and Zombie Chow. For example, with both already on board, you can attack with the Chow and then kill it using Shadow Word: Pain or Circle of Healing. These plays are common finishers and can drastically increase your damage potential beyond what is immediately obvious.

3.1. Synergies & Combinations

Priest is a very combo heavy deck and as such, learning the interactions between your cards is key to playing the class successfully.

Injured Blademaster together with Circle of Healing creates a 4/7 minion for 3 Mana, a hugely powerful tempo play. Combining even further with Northshire Cleric will even draw you a card in the process as well as enabling more possible card draws in the future by healing your Blademaster as it clears your opponent's board.

Auchenai Soulpriest and Circle of Healing turns your Circle of Healing into a 4 damage global AoE. While not always useful when you have minions on board, it is one of the best catch-up mechanisms in the game.

Northshire Cleric in combination with Circle of Healing can be used to draw multiple cards in 1 turn.

Sylvanas Windrunner plus Shadow Word: Death is a powerful combo. Since Shadow Word: Death is able to target your own minions, this combo can be used as a Mind Control effect if your opponent has 1 huge minion in play.

3.2. Mulligans & Matchup Specific Strategies

Deathrattle Priest is a deck that plays out fairly consistently across most matchups. You will mulligan for your Undertakers and accompanying low cost Deathrattle minions, along with Power Word: Shield to help your minions survive early trades.

Against slower control matchups, you can consider keeping Injured Blademaster, especially in conjunction with Circle of Healing, as the game will likely progress slowly enough for you to play out the Blademaster and start to heal it. Northshire Cleric is best mulliganed away against Control as it is too easily dealt with by removal heavy decks. It is much preferred to draw into this card later and play it on a turn when you can get immediate value by healing a minion. The exception to this rule is Control Paladin. In this matchup Cleric can often not be dealt with until Turn 4 and deals extremely efficiently with Paladin's Hero Power.

Against aggro, you can keep Northshire Cleric as it may get incredible value against opposing Leper Gnomes and similar minions. Conversely, you should not keep Injured Blademaster in these matchups as it is often too slow to make an impact. Keeping an Auchenai Soulpriest + Circle of Healing combo against board heavy aggro decks like Zoo is often successful too, as one board clear can often be enough to turn the game in your favour.

3.3. Card Swaps

This deck is built to give an advantage against aggressive decks due to the frequency of such decks in the meta currently. If for some reason you find yourself facing more control, you can cut Shadow Word: Pain for Mind Control to give you more late game power against these decks.

A silence effect in the form of Silence or Mass Dispel can be a strong addition due to the frequency of Deathrattle effects in the meta currently. Try either in the place of a Injured Blademaster.

Baron Rivendare can also be included in the deck in the place of the Defender of Argus. It can create some hugely powerful synergy plays with your Deathrattle minions but is extremely situational and poor in isolation.
