Build Introduction

This Blood WaveBlood Wave build relies on the Path of DarknessPath of Darkness upgrade and full Fer of the Black ShroudBlack Shroud Charm set to make the most of The Gloom WardThe Gloom Ward Shadowblight power. While being quite expensive to gear and setup-heavy in terms of playstyle, its performance makes it worth the effort. Shadowblight Blood WaveWave is a strong challenger for the crown in the Necromancer meta.

Skill Bar and Skill Tree Points

Suggested Skill Bar
SeverSeverIron MaidenIron MaidenBlightBlightBlood WaveBlood WaveHemorrhageHemorrhageBone PrisonBone Prison

Use the Skill Tree above to complete the 83-point build. 69 skill points are gained by leveling, and 14 skill points are locked behind the Season Rank System or Renown for Seasonal or Eternal characters, respectively.

DecrepifyDecrepify is applied through WatWat Runeword, so it is not present on the Skills Bar. Also, it is the lowest priority skill and only the last Skill Points are used to level it above 1/15.

The new Lord of Hatred expansion Skill Tree unlocks in stages, permanently unlocking new skill clusters. For example, Necromancer Curses unlock at level 13, so from level 13 it is possible to refund all previously allocated skill points and start leveling skills starting from the Curses cluster right away (or anywhere above it).

Skill points from the Season Rank System or Renown do not affect Skill Tree progress and can be allocated to skill ranks you already unlocked.

Gear, Stats, Gems and Runes

The following sections cover the essential itemization to improve the power of your character in the endgame of Diablo 4.

For the dedicated page on Gear Systems and Itemization Overview, check the guide here.

Choosing Uniques vs Unique Charms

With itemization changes in the Lord of Hatred expansion, Unique gear now has mostly randomized but immutable affixes, like any Legendary item would. It is important to seek pieces with mostly recommended affixes. The Unique Aspect value, if not satisfactory, can be rerolled via Horadric Cube.

Most Unique Aspects can be extracted into a Charm via the Horadric Cube, and generally only one can be equipped in the Talisman system.

For build-defining Uniques, it is worth having both the physical version (with recommended affixes you would expect on a Legendary piece in the same slot) and the Charm version.

A Unique Charm effectively allows you to shuffle two Unique Aspects from the same or conflicting gear slots, or to have a Unique Aspect equipped while the gear slot is occupied by a superior gear piece – until a better version is found.

Paragon Board

Board attachment order and pathways:

  1. Frailty
  2. Wither
  3. Frailty – Glyph Slot
  4. Scent of Death
  5. Scent of Death – Glyph Slot
  6. Blood Begets Blood
  7. Blood Begets Blood – Glyph Slot
  8. Wither – Glyph Slot

It is imperative to level up all Glyphs to level 15 first to increase their activation radius, and then to level 51 to unlock the secondary damage multiplier. For more information about Paragon Glyphs and how to level them, see here.

Some paragon points are locked behind the Season Rank System. The remaining Paragon points are used to take all Intelligence nodes you can reach and any Magic nodes you may find useful.

Season 13 Mechanics

Season 13 does not offer specific seasonal mechanics due to the release of the Lord of Hatred expansion. Many new features are available to explore, including War Plans, Talismans, Horadric Cube, and Echoing Hatred. Additionally, several buildcrafting systems were overhauled, such as Skill Trees, Tempering, Aspects and Uniques.

For a complete overview of the current Season, its mechanics and theme, new leveling activities, and other changes, please take a look at our comprehensive season hub here.

Talismans

The Lord of Hatred expansion introduces Talismans as a new character progression and itemization layer. Find, equip, and fill a suitable Horadric Seal with a variety of Charms. These grant everything from plain stats similar to any gear piece to powerful set effects, doubling down on and elevating Necromancer archetypes to new heights.

This builds Talisman goalposts would be:

  • The Gloom WardThe Gloom Ward is to be equipped, if The Gloom WardThe Gloom Ward of the desired quality is not obtained and equipped.
  • Bloodless ScreamBloodless Scream is the second most potent Unique Charm for the build.
  • Legendary Seal with +1 Charm Slot affix, to unlock 6 Charm slots asap.
  • Full Fer of the Black ShroudBlack Shroud set of any quality. 5-set takes priority over any other Charms except The Gloom WardThe Gloom Ward if it is still used.
  • Charms replacements with better versions of themselves, including affixes like:
    • + to Darkness Skills
    • +%[x] Shadow Damage
    • Cooldown Reduction
    • +% Maximum Life
    • +% Movement Speed
    • +% All Stats

Mercenaries

During the Vessel of Hatred campaign, you will unlock Mercenaries to assist you. While you can choose freely early on, we recommend Aldkin as your main merc:

For the reinforcement, stick with Raheir, utilizing BastionBastion when you are hit with a Control Impairing effect.

Rotation and Build Mechanics

This build rotation is designed to reset the cooldown of Blood WaveBlood Wave by semi-automated generation and consumption of Blood Orbs. Besides that, skills rotation is tailored for naturally activating most damage multipliers for the next Blood WaveBlood Wave cast. The ultimate goal of the build is to provide a stream of normalized high Shadow damage instances to proc The Gloom WardThe Gloom Ward.

Rotation and Playstyle

  1. If Blood WaveBlood Wave is on cooldown and Blood Orbs are available in the vicinity, pick them up using Blood MaidenBlood Maiden casts.
  2. Engage enemies by cursing most of them with a few Blood MaidenBlood Maiden casts.
  3. Apply WhirlpoolWhirlpool BlightBlights and Blood Runs ColdBlood Runs Cold HemorrhageHemorrhage to Freeze as many non-Boss mobs as possible and generate Blood Orbs.
  4. Keep generating Blood Orbs using the previous step and collecting them with Blood MaidenBlood Maiden casts until Blood WaveBlood Wave is off cooldown.
  5. Reposition yourself to be able to hit most of the frozen enemies if you are using Kessime's LegacyKessime’s Legacy.
  6. Cast Bone PrisonBone Prison, covering as many enemies as possible, followed by Blood WaveBlood Wave.
  7. If too many enemies are still alive and close, disengage and pull back a bit of distance, letting Spirit Wolves grab the aggro.
  8. Repeat.

Cooldown Reduction Contributors

Cooldown Reduction engine is a set of abilities, upgrades and buffs that reduce active cooldowns by fulfilling certain conditions. This build relies primarily on Fastblood AspectFastblood Aspect and Blood Orb collection. Secondarily, it uses Lucky Hit against enemies cursed by DecrepifyDecrepify with the Cooldown Reduction upgrade, which is automatically applied by IgniIgni WatWat runeword.

Lucky Hit triggers:

  • Aldkin mercenary Flame SurgeFlame Surge (AoE)
  • BlightBlight (high Lucky Hit Chance, AoE)
  • Blood WaveBlood Wave (high base Lucky Hit Chance, AoE)
  • HemorrhageHemorrhage (high base Lucky Hit Chance)
  • CehCeh Spirit Wolf (high base Lucky Hit Chance)
