Lagiacrus Introduction
Lagiacrus is a returning monster from Monster Hunter Tri and is classified as a Leviathan. He looks like an alligator but with blue scales and has prominent crystals on his back that are imbued with lightning. He primarily relies on water and his lighting attacks and we all know that electricity mixed with water is no good for the hunter. But worry not, I am here to help you out with our Lagiacrus guide.

Unlocking Lagiacrus
Lagiacrus is another returning monster added to Monster Hunter Wilds in the second title update on June 30th, 2025. To unlock his quest, you’ll need to reach Hunter Rank 31. Once you’ve hit the required rank, head to the Scarlet Forest and speak to Erik to begin the quest Trembling Blue Currents. Before you can start the Lagiacrus questline, make sure you’ve completed the main story mission A World Upside Down and the side mission Forest Dosuhagam, as both are required to unlock it.
After you follow Erik for a bit, you will discover Rathalos’s tracks. And eventually you will come across the Lord of the Sea himself - Lagiacrus, In this mission you have to actually capture him, and not slay him or you will fail the quest, so keep that in mind and bring in a pitfall trap or a shock trap and at least 2 tranq bombs.
Lagiacrus Combat Guide
Let’s go over Lagiacrus’s strengths, weaknesses, his attack moves and how to fight him. Make sure to bring a Fire, Ice or Dragon elemental weapon with you if you are wanting to go for the fastest kill time or just optimal damage in general. Lagiacrus is mostly weak to poison, sleep, and blast. He can be stunned and paralyzed too but not as easily, so I do not recommend going for those status effects. Everything can be used against him as well including flash pods, shock traps and pitfall traps with the only exception being sonic bombs which are completely useless.
Lagiacrus is a water-based monster with lightning powers, as I mentioned earlier. Most of the time, you’ll end up fighting him either along the shore or underwater. That’s right — his hunt is especially unique, as he’s currently the only monster in Monster Hunter Wilds that can be fought underwater. However, you won’t be able to use your weapon freely while submerged. Instead, you’ll have to rely on your slinger to latch onto him, stab him with your knife to open wounds, and then follow up with your weapon to burst them.
Before we dive deeper into the underwater mechanics, let’s go over his basic land-based moves. Lagiacrus has quite a diverse move-set, and he can be a little tricky to read thanks to his long tail and his ability to coil up like a snake. Be especially cautious when positioning yourself near the back or sides of his tail — he’ll often attempt to body slam you sideways while simultaneously whipping his tail. This move has a deceptively wide reach. You can counter it with a longsword foresight slash, guard it, or, of course, simply dodge out of the way
If you’re focusing on cutting off his tail, be aware that Lagiacrus will lift his tail with a slight delay before slamming it down on you. Right after, he’ll immediately follow up with a tail swipe to either the left or right. It’s best to guard, counter, or offset this attack. While you can dodge the slam itself, there’s a decent chance you might get caught by the follow-up swipe — so stay sharp.
When you mount Lagiacrus, you’ll be able to hop between his head, mid-back, and the base of his tail. I recommend creating wounds on both his head and tail, but make it a priority to pop the tail wound until it gets severed. Doing this weakens his tail-based attacks and slightly shortens his overall body length. If you’re positioned in front of him, he might roll forward toward you and then slap you clean across the face with his tail, sending you flying back to your momma’s house. This particular attack is well-telegraphed — you’ll notice him pulling his head and upper body back as he prepares to roll. I suggest blocking, countering if your timing’s solid, or just running far away to safely dodge it.
Occasionally, Lagiacrus will spit out lightning orbs if you’re in front of him at a distance. Don’t panic — just pick a direction and run to either side. They might look intimidating, but their hitboxes aren’t too bad and they’re pretty easy to avoid.
If you’re standing right next to Lagiacrus, he’ll sometimes start coiling up like a snake, whipping you with either his face or tail as he turns his body around to face the opposite direction. I recommend guarding or countering this move, the offset timing is a little awkward here, and if you try dodging, there’s a good chance you’ll get clipped by either the tail or the head.
Lagiacrus also has a signature lightning move where he charges up his entire body and releases a massive shockwave around him. If you’re wearing low-defense armor or have poor Thunder resistance, this move can one-shot you. It’s one of his most devastating attacks, and it’s surprisingly easy to miss the tell. The moment you see him turning his neck toward his body while standing still, that’s your signal to immediately run for it.
While it’s technically possible to counter the explosion itself with your longsword, you’ll likely still get hit by the lingering electric shocks on the ground afterward so it’s much safer to just run away. Another move to watch for is his charging head bite. You’ll know it’s coming when he pulls his head back. This one’s pretty straightforward: you can easily guard, offset, or counter it. Finally, if you’re standing in front of him, Lagiacrus may lift up his chest and head before slamming them down after a short delay. This attack hits hard if it connects, so it’s best to either guard, offset, or — ideally counter it. You can also dodge if you’re not comfortable with the timing, but make sure to dodge to the sides, not backward.
If you’re at a distance, Lagiacrus may charge at you with his full body strength. This attack is well-telegraphed and pretty easy to dodge — just pick a side and run toward it. Countering and guarding work too if you prefer to hold your ground.
Underwater Combat
As you continue to chip away at Lagiacrus’s health, he’ll eventually retreat to where he feels most at home — the sea. Now, there’s no full-on underwater combat here like there was in Monster Hunter Tri. Instead, you’ll use your Hook Slinger to latch onto Lagiacrus, stab him to create wounds, and open him up for more damage. You’ll also find Sharp Barnacle Clusters around the area that you can interact with using your Hook Slinger to collect Sharp Pods. These do solid damage when fired at Lagiacrus, so grab them whenever you can and aim for the face. Don’t forget to use Submerged Rubble in the environment as traps too — they can turn the tide of the fight in your favor.
His move-set underwater might seem intimidating at first, but it’s really not that bad. Since you can’t use your weapons freely underwater, you won’t need to worry about counters or guards. Just focus on dodging to the sides when he fires lightning balls or lunges at you. The goal here is to deal as much damage as quickly as possible to prevent him from unleashing any devastating attacks.
Enraged State
Now, let’s quickly talk about his enraged state. You’ll know he’s enraged when he lets out a loud-roar and his crystals begin pulsating with lightning. In this state, Lagiacrus attacks faster and hits significantly harder. Some of his moves, like the body slam and charge, can even happen twice in a row, so stay on your toes. When he is enraged it’s not worth risking trying to get more damage on him. Just try to survive for as long as possible and only hit and run when you can, that is of course unless you manage to knock him down or mount him.
Conclusion
In conclusion, Lagiacrus is a unique and fun fight that stays largely faithful to its original counterpart from Monster Hunter Tri, with some new underwater mechanics added to keep the experience reminiscent of the old days. It’s not an overly difficult fight — unless, of course, you’re taking on the Tempered version, which is much deadlier and comes with a larger health pool. In that case, my best advice is to play more cautiously than you would against his regular high-rank counterpart.
If you’re struggling to handle the fight solo, don’t hesitate to call in the NPC support hunters for extra distractions, or post your quest online to get help from fellow players. Also, make good use of environmental traps whenever you can, or bait him into them using a Luring Pod. And if you really want to turn the odds in your favor, lure him into a fight with Rathalos and watch them duke it out in an epic turf war — it’s a great way to score some free extra damage. Rinse and repeat, and before long, the Lord of the Seas will become the Lord of the Grave.
