Mizutsune Combat Guide
Mizutsune made his return to Monster Hunter Wilds in the first title update released on April 4th, 2025. To unlock his quest, you’ll need to be at least Hunter Rank 21. Once you meet the requirement, head over to Scarlet Forest and speak to Kanya to begin her questline. However, make sure to complete her fishing tutorial side mission first, or you won’t be able to access the Mizutsune quest. After following Kanya and Alma to the Wud Wud, a cutscene will trigger, officially starting the hunt.
To take down Mizutsune efficiently, be sure to bring an ice, thunder, or dragon elemental weapon for optimal damage. He’s equally susceptible to all status effects including poison, sleep, paralysis, blast, and stun. Every utility item works against him too—flash pods, shock traps, and pitfall traps—except for sonic bombs, which have no effect.
Mizutsune is a water-based monster that leans heavily into using bubbles and aquatic attacks. Anytime he leaps around, he releases bubbles that can disorient you. If you get hit by too many, your hunter will begin sliding around uncontrollably, which can be frustrating and throw off your positioning. When facing him from the front, be cautious—he may lunge with a biting attack or spit out three bubbles at once.
If you’re aggressive, he may quickly spin around to whip you with his full body and tail. Occasionally, he’ll leap forward and then spin to slam his tail down behind him. His signature attack involves blasting a stream of water from his mouth while sweeping his head side to side or up and down. He doesn’t always use both directions, but sometimes he’ll combo them together. When you see it coming, either roll to the side before the stream hits or get behind him immediately. If the attack lands, it will inflict waterblight, draining your stamina over time unless you consume a Nulberry.
Disabling his tail early is a solid strategy unless you’re running a hammer—in that case, go for the head to keep him stunned and knocked down. When mounting Mizutsune, you’ll have three wound points to open: his head, midsection, and the base of his tail. Since he’s low to the ground and not particularly large, any of these spots are fairly easy to target, so just pop whichever makes the most sense in the moment.
Enraged State
Mizutsune enters his enraged state when blue flames ignite around his face, and his body starts to glow. During this phase, he becomes far more aggressive, chaining his attacks together more frequently and moving around much faster. He will also attempt to unleash an explosive water blast from his mouth—this is a highly dangerous attack that can come out very quickly and catch you off guard if you’re not prepared. The bubbles he releases during this phase also travel faster and deal significantly more damage. Try your best to navigate around them or lure Mizutsune into a clearer area away from the bubbles. His tail attacks also become notably deadlier during this time.
Truth be told, the high-rank version of Mizutsune is relatively easy. It’s the tempered version you really need to worry about. Not only does he have a much larger health pool, but his bubbles and tail attacks hit incredibly hard—especially when he’s enraged and those blue flames are lit. One of the most dangerous moves he has is the aerial tail slam. He’ll leap straight up into the air and come crashing down on you with his tail. If this hits while he’s enraged, it’s likely to cart you on the spot—it’s absolutely lethal.
Adding to the danger, when Mizutsune is enraged, his bubbles become explosive and can take a massive chunk of your health. In this state, he also never seems to stop moving, making it really difficult to land full combos. Try to bait out his water spray attack—when he starts that, he becomes stationary, giving you a perfect opening to get behind him and go all-in on his head or tail for some serious damage. Another move to watch for is when he lifts his body and then, after a noticeable delay, propels himself forward at you. This move hits extremely hard, so avoid it at all costs.
Every now and then, tempered Mizutsune might charge toward you and follow up with a backflip tail kick. This move is quick, hard to anticipate, and very dangerous, so stay alert. He may also try to slam down on you with one of his front legs—and occasionally he’ll do it twice in a row. This move is more predictable and well-telegraphed, so you can counter it, guard, offset, or dodge. On some occasions, he might simply swipe at you with one of his forelegs, but this rarely happens and isn’t particularly threatening.
Whatever you do, do not fight a tempered Mizutsune in tight, enclosed areas. Always use a luring pod to lead him into a wider, more open space. The best spot for this is Area 15 in the Scarlet Forest. The reason is simple: having a wide area gives you more space to dodge his many bubbles and avoid his tail-slam attacks more effectively.
It’s also worth pointing out that Area 15 contains a massive dam rubble hanging above. You can use your hook slinger to bring it down on the tempered Mizutsune, dealing over 2,000 raw damage and instantly knocking him down. This gives you a fantastic opportunity to go fully offensive while he’s downed, and it’s an essential damage boost if you’re struggling to finish the fight.
If you see a blue wound on tempered Mizutsune, be sure to pop it. Doing so not only dishes out strong damage and knocks him down, but also gives you access to pods from the battle remains that can be used to deal even more damage. Don’t forget to carry a stack of Nulberries as well—they’re crucial for cleansing waterblight after getting sprayed by his water stream.
Conclusion
All in all, Mizutsune isn’t too difficult in high-rank, but his tempered version is a whole different story and definitely poses a real threat. His water attacks and bubbles aren’t much of a problem in high-rank, but during a tempered hunt, they become dangerous tools that can easily lead to a cart if you’re not careful.
Never use a water-elemental weapon against him since he’s completely immune to it, and always make sure to fight him in wide-open spaces. If you're still having trouble, fall back on your utility items like pitfall traps and shock traps for some additional breathing room and free hits. And don’t forget about the dam rubble in Area 15—it’s a free 2,000 damage that can help you turn the tide. Be patient, keep your eyes on his face and bubbles, and prioritize severing that tail early to limit his range of attack. Rinse and repeat, and this flashy water fox will be making a splash no more.
