Gearing a Retribution Paladin
Welcome to our Gear Page for Retribution Paladin. This guide contains all the information you need to know about how to gear a Retribution Paladin, including crafted gear, embellishments, and trinkets.
For more specific information about how stats work for Retribution, you can visit our Stats guide:
The Importance of "Simming Yourself" as a Retribution Paladin
With the sheer number of possible gear combinations, a generic stat priority or BiS list is often not going to be the best way to determine how to gear your character. Instead, you can use Raidbots to get a better idea of how changing different items will affect your character. Especially for Retribution, you will frequently find the values of different stats fluctuate a lot as you upgrade your gear, so using a more objective metric to help you make gearing decisions is invaluable.
If you are not experienced with using Raidbots, see the guide below for more information on how to use it:

Retribution Paladin Tier Set for Dragonflight Season 3
The Tier Set bonus for Dragonflight Season 3 for Retribution Paladin is the Zealous Pyreknight's Ardor. The bonuses it provides are:
- Paladin Retribution 10.2 Class Set 2pc — Expurgation lasts an additional 3 seconds and deals 30% more damage. Casting Judgment or Divine Toll on a target with Expurgation causes Wrathful Sanction, damaging the target and resonating half of the initial damage to up to 4 nearby enemies.
- Paladin Retribution 10.2 Class Set 4pc — Wrathful Sanction grants you Echoes of Wrath, causing your next Final Verdict or Divine Storm to deal damage a second time at 25% effectiveness.
These bonuses dramatically increase the power of Judgment and buff your spender damage significantly, too. You should use both bonuses as soon as possible, replacing older tier sets as soon as you can.
Since you only need 4 out of the 5 items to activate the bonus, you can drop the Gloves for other items if necessary, depending on your current gear.
Retribution Paladin Crafted Gear and Embellishments
Crafted Gear for Retribution Paladin
In general, you should focus your early crafts on getting embellished gear. For more information on that, see the section below.
Once you have your two embellished items, the next best item to craft will usually be a weapon, such as Obsidian Seared Claymore. They do cost 2 Spark of Dreams, so you may not be able to craft one early on, but if you are yet to acquire a high item-level weapon later in the season, it is an excellent option. Next, jewelry is a good choice since you can customize its secondary stats as required, and all crafted rings come with a socket. Finally, fill out any low-item level non-tier slots such as bracers, cloak, belt, and feet, and then you have the option of crafting additional embellished items for different content types.
When crafting gear, you will want to use a missive to set the item's secondary stats. Although you should sim your options to check what the best one for your gear setup would be, a good default to use is Draconic Missive of the Aurora.
Embellishments for Retribution Paladin
Choosing embellishments largely depends on the type of content you want to mainly do. Fortunately, there is some overlap between desirable embellishments for Raid and for Mythic+.
For Raid, you will want to craft two Plate slots with Shadowflame-Tempered Armor Patch. The theoretical best slots to craft these on are your Bracers and Cloak, with Boots and Belt being similar alternatives, but you can put it on any slot that you have at low item level at the time. Blue Silken Lining is an alternative that can be competitive if you have very high uptime on its buff, but is impractical for progression. Elemental Lariat is another popular embellishment, but requires full sockets to be competitive at all, and even then is a subpar option for single-target compared to the other embellishments.
For Mythic+, Frostfire Legguards of Preparation is the best choice for AoE since the Haste effect will proc on every new pack, and many bosses spawn new enemies that can proc it, too. Shadowflame-Tempered Armor Patch is the best choice for priority damage with its slot following the same crafting heuristics as Raid. Other embellishments like Blue Silken Lining, Elemental Lariat, and Allied Wristguard of Companionship also see some use as embellishments that are more generally decent options for both single-target and AoE. The recommendation is to use Frostfire Legguards of Preparation and Shadowflame-Tempered Armor Patch as the strongest overall embellishments, but other combinations are also viable, although they come with limitations as mentioned above.
Retribution Paladin Trinkets
Retribution wants different trinkets depending on the situation. On single-target, trinkets with damage procs or on-use damage effects tend to be stronger, while on AoE, trinkets that provide secondary stats tend to be best.
For single-target, the strongest trinkets in Season 3 are:
- Cataclysmic Signet Brand - This trinket is the strongest for sustained combat, but it does require at least a few minutes to consistently stack up. It does a very small amount of cleave damage, too, but not a significant amount when compared to other trinkets.
- Ashes of the Embersoul - Provides passive Haste and has an on-use effect that removes that Haste to provide you with a very large Strength buff. This is an extremely strong burst trinket, and is best used with Avenging Wrath.
- Augury of the Primal Flame - A damage proc that has very high variance. It can proc much more or much less than expected, so be wary when using it that it is very inconsistent.
- Rezan's Gleaming Eye - Another purely passive damage proc trinket. It summons a dinosaur to attack your target.
- Branch of the Tormented Ancient - An on-use damage trinket that slows you when used until you use enough abilities to break it. This should usually happen in a matter of seconds, so this drawback is fairly insignificant. It does gain damage with extra targets as well, though not enough for it to be one of the strongest trinkets on AoE.
For AoE, the strongest trinkets in Season 3 are:
- Pip's Emerald Friendship Badge - A passive stat-stick that will occasionally cycle through the buffs it provides, empowering them as it does.
- Ashes of the Embersoul - See above. This is one of the best AoE trinkets while also being a strong single-target trinket as well, making it a good choice for situations where both types of damage are useful.
- Porcelain Crab - A passive Mastery proc trinket. Mastery generally is not an amazing stat, but it tends to perform better on AoE than it does on single-target, especially with other stat-based trinkets rather than damage proc ones.
- Ember of Nullification - A passive Versatility stat-stick. Its extra effect is rarely relevant. An unexciting but solid option.
- Augury of the Primal Flame - Although this trinket is primarily strong on single-target, if you want a trinket that can also do decent AoE damage while still predominantly being single-target focused this is a strong choice.
