General Information

Welcome to our Frost Death Knight DPS guide for World of Warcraft Legion 7.0.3. Here, you will learn everything you need to know about playing a Frost Death Knight in a raid environment, although most of the content also applies to normal and heroic dungeons.

About Our Reviewer

This guide has been reviewed and approved by Tegu, one of the best DPS Death Knights in the world, who raids in Serenity. You can follow him on Twitter, and you can watch his stream on Twitch.

1. Class Overview

The Frost specialisation (which now only allows for dual-wielding One-Handed Weapons) provides reasonable single target and AoE DPS, but it currently appears to be behind Unholy in both areas.

Its playstyle is straightforward, and its rotation is easy to learn and master.

2. Significant 7.0.3 Changes

The Frost specialisation has undergone considerable changes from Warlords of Draenor. While several key abilities have been retained and the playstyle has similarities, many things have changed. Here are the most important differences.

  • The Rune System has been drastically simplified (there is now only one type of Rune, and Runes recharge individually).
  • Dual-wielding One-Handed Weapons is now the only possible way of playing the specialisation.
  • Runic Empowerment Icon Runic Empowerment is now a passive ability, and is the only means of increasing Rune regeneration rate.
  • Presences have been removed.
  • Blood Plague has been removed, and Frost Fever Icon Frost Fever can only be applied by Howling Blast Icon Howling Blast.
  • Soul Reaper, Icy Touch, Plague Strike, Blood Boil, Death and Decay, and Army of the Dead have been removed.
  • Rime Icon Rime now also increases the damage of Howling Blast.
  • Killing Machine Icon Killing Machine now has a chance to proc from auto attack critical strikes (as opposed to just from auto attacks).

3. Strengths

  • Good sustained cleave damage
  • Reasonably easy to learn and master

4. Weaknesses

  • Weak single target damage
  • Lacking AoE burst damage
  • Weak defensive toolkit compared to Unholy
  • Lacks Unholy's passive movement speed bonus
  • Nothing unique that it can bring to help the raid

5. Contents

To make it easy to navigate the guide, we have split it into 7 pages:

6. ChangeLog

  • 22 Jul. 2016: Added Strengths and Weaknesses.
  • 18 Jul. 2016: Updated for the Legion pre-patch.
