General Information

Welcome to our Elemental Shaman DPS guide for World of Warcraft Legion 7.0.3. Here, you will learn everything you need to know about playing an Elemental Shaman in a raid environment and in Mythic+ dungeons.

About Our Author

This guide has been written by Furty who raids in Serenity, one of the top World of Warcraft guilds. He plays most classes at the highest level. You can follow him on Twitter and watch him play on Twitch.

1. Class Overview

Elemental Shaman is a damage dealing spellcaster with a straightforward but flexible toolkit. While it does not capitalize on any specific niche, Elemental can approach a multitude of environments without feeling compromised. Whether you are questing, powering through dungeons, or zoning into a raid for the first time, this is a spec that always feels like it has a place at the table. This specialization feels particularly at home when sustained cleave or AoE is present, but not a priority, as Elemental does both very efficiently while maintaining full single target presence. Through talents, Elemental also has access to some potent burst potential, allowing them to surge ahead during damage checks or dungeon bosses.

2. What Has Changed?

  • Elemental now uses a new resource, Maelstrom, to fuel damage output rather than Lightning Shield Icon Lightning Shield charges.
  • Shock cooldowns removed.
  • Many totems can now be placed with a targeting reticle without requiring a talent investment.
  • Many of the niche totems, such as Grounding Totem, have either been removed or relegated to PvP-only roles.
  • Mastery has been reworked (again).
  • Many glyphs are no longer present within the game.
  • Many changes to the talent tree, including a variety of new abilities and passives.

3. Strengths

  • Good single target burst
  • Efficient cleave and AoE
  • Flexible toolkit
  • Good raid utility

4. Weaknesses

  • Deals with movement poorly
  • Significant damage ramp up in most situations
  • Low overall damage output on most fights
  • Scales poorly

5. Viability in the Current Patch

Elemental is currently an average specialization. While Elemental does deal with most fight types well, it also does not specialize enough to bring something unique to a raid group. Damage output is a little too weak to displace the dominant classes.
