General Information

Welcome to our Beast Mastery Hunter DPS guide for World of Warcraft Legion 7.1.5. Here, you will learn everything you need to know about playing a Beast Mastery Hunter in a raid environment and in Mythic+ dungeons.

About Our Author

This guide has been written by Azortharion, the main theorycrafter of the spec. He is also an accomplished player who raids in Vanguard. You can also watch his stream on Twitch.

1. Class Overview

All the specs have very similar single-target output in patch 7.1.5. Beast Mastery has superior cleave to Marksmanship in general, but worse potential for burst AoE than both Marksmanship and Survival. It is infinitely mobile, which is its biggest asset, and it can deal lots of damage in the hands of a player at any skill level.

2. What Has Changed in 7.1.5?

Beast Mastery has received a number of tuning and design changes in 7.1.5 that will affect its choice of talents, but not so much its basic gameplay.

Changes made to Beast Mastery in 7.1.5 include:

  • Beast Mastery can now use Tar Trap Icon Tar Trap and Freezing Trap Icon Freezing Trap, previously Survival-only spells.
  • The level 15 talent Big Game Hunter Icon Big Game Hunter increases the crit chance of auto- and Cobra Shot by 60% on targets above 80% health, up from 50%.
  • The level 15 talent Way of the Cobra Icon Way of the Cobra now increases Cobra Shot Icon Cobra Shot damage by 10% for every pet/guardian you have active, up from 8%.
  • The level 30 talent Chimaera Shot Icon Chimaera Shot damage increased by 60%.
  • The level 30 talent Dire Frenzy Icon Dire Frenzy's cooldown was reduced to 12 seconds, down from 15 (Dire Beast remains the same 12 seconds as before).
  • The level 45 talent Farstrider Icon Farstrider now gives active ability critical strikes a 15% chance to reset the cooldown on Disengage, up from a 10% chance.
  • The level 60 talent One with the Pack Icon One with the Pack now grants your auto-shot critical strikes to have a 30% increased chance to reset Dire Beast's cooldown, up from a 15% increased chance.
  • The level 60 talent Blink Strikes Icon Blink Strikes now increases pet Basic Attack damage by 100%, up from 50%.
  • The level 90 talent Barrage Icon Barrage now no longer deals double damage to the current target. Instead, it deals the same, low damage to all targets. This is to make it less viable for single-target when it is meant to be an AoE talent. Finally, it deals 80% increased damage for Beast Mastery only.
  • The level 90 talent Volley Icon Volley deals 50% increased damage for Beast Mastery only.
  • The level 100 talent Aspect of the Beast Icon Aspect of the Beast's Ferocity-specific DoT damage has been increased by 100%. The Tenacity-specific effect now reduces pet damage taken by 30% for 6 seconds, up from 15%.
  • The level 100 talent Stampede Icon Stampede's damage was increased by 15.
  • Multi-Shot Icon Multi-Shot damage has been increased by 51.5%.

3. How Does it Work?

  • Focus is the primary resource. It is generated passively at a base rate of 10 focus per second, but certain abilities will amplify this.
  • Dire Beast Icon Dire Beast generates a small amount of focus each cast and also deals damage for its duration.
  • Kill Command Icon Kill Command deals high damage to your pet's current target. This ability will take up most of your DPS.
  • Beast Cleave Icon Beast Cleave causes Multi-Shot to give the pet a 4-second buff that causes its automatic attacks (not Kill Command) to also hit all other targets around it. Combining this with pet-damage increasing cooldowns gives the spec immense AoE capabilities.
  • Bestial Wrath Icon Bestial Wrath increases your overall damage done.
  • Aspect of the Wild Icon Aspect of the Wild increases focus regen massively and also increases critical strike chance by 10% across the board.

4. Strengths

  • Best single-target damage given ideal conditions (The Mantle of Command Icon The Mantle of Command legendary).
  • Very easy to play.
  • Unlimited mobility.
  • Strongest cleave, most reliable on-demand burst single-target.

5. Weaknesses

  • Limited target-switching capabilities due to damage being pet/AI-based.
  • Relies more on correct legendaries and set bonuses than other specs.

6. Viability in the Current Patch

Beast Mastery's main strength now and in the past has been its unlimited mobility and relative ease of play compared to the other Hunter specs. This still holds true in the Nighthold, and that, along with its other strengths and manageable weaknesses, makes it an ideal raiding spec for Nighthold. The biggest problem, and the one that is completely out of the player's hands, is that it relies on legendaries to be good. The good news in that regard is that it has a lot of decent Legendaries, and one of its good Legendaries, Call of the Wild Icon Call of the Wild, is also the best in slot Legendary for Survival Hunters. If you have no DPS legendaries for other specs already, Beast Mastery is a very solid choice, especially for less hardcore scenarios.
