The New Diablo II Patch is Here! Wait, That's Not a Typo...

The first Diablo II patch, since before Diablo III was released, has surprised many of us.

Back in November, an Engineer job posting appeared on Blizzard.com's Careers page, under the Diablo section, outlining a new position and read like this:

Blizzard Icon Blizzard Careers

Compelling stories. Intense multiplayer. Endless replayability. Qualities that made StarCraft, Warcraft III, and Diablo II the titans of their day. Evolving operating systems, hardware, and online services have made them more difficult to be experienced by their loyal followers or reaching a new generation.

We’re restoring them to glory, and we need your engineering talents, your passion, and your ability to get tough jobs done.

Many speculated at HD remasters of the Holy Trinity, Starcraft, Diablo II and Warcraft III.

While this possibility is far from removed, we are already seeing some fruits from this labor. This thread popped up on Battle.net about 24 ago.

As witnessed in the picture, the new patch is called 1.14a, and it can be downloaded a few ways.

I already had Diablo 2 running on my Windows 10 pc, so for me the process was the usual opening of the game and connecting to the Battle.net servers.

The second method, for those who already have the game installed, is to the run the BNUpdate.exe in the game's directory. This will update the game's files and launch the game after confirming success.

The final way is for those who don't have the game installed. Simply head to your games list in the Battle.net webpage, and download a fresh copy. The fresh copy will install the game fully updated from the dig.

I am still letting the amazement sink in. I know that a few confused responses came when I first mentioned the patch around our digital "office".

Whether this is all that was in mind when Blizzard began this mission to update their classic titles, or if this is a step toward some larger scheme, it is truly great to see a company patching a product sixteen years after release.

To put this in full perspective, Windows XP was released after Diablo II, and has since been removed from active support by Microsoft. That means Diablo II outlasted the most successful Windows release to date.

Not bad Blizzard...

I'd love for them to destroy bots across both Diablo games ;)

Yes, I actually had the D2 itch really bad last fall, and I had been playing here and there, but it required some getting set-up on WIndows 10.

I'm really glad to see them make it accessible to everyone once again!

Happy four year anniversary since the release of Reaper of Souls! The first and only expansion for Diablo 3, it was preceded by about a month by Patch 2.0, which changed a number of gameplay systems in Diablo 3 like Loot 2.0, Paragon 2.0, Difficulty System Rework. The Reaper of Souls then arrived in Sanctuary as Malthael captured the Black Soulstone, becoming the Aspect of Death. The expansion brought:
A new class, the stalwart Crusader Level cap raised to 70 New items/powers only for level 61+ characters. Act V - Westmarch, Blood Marsh, and Battlefields of Eternity as some of the main locations Adventure Mode - Bounties, Nephalem Rifts The Mystic - Enchanting and Transmogrification Kadala and Blood Shard Gambling - The greatest evil of them all With that being said, we’re here to remember all the changes that have come to Diablo 3 since release, whether it was the introduction of the Infernal Machine, Brawling, Legendary Gems, or the removal of the Auction House, Invulnerable Minions, or the rework of Crafting Materials, Bounties, or Reflect affix.
We’ve got 20 Diablo velcro patches to give out. They were given out at BlizzCon 2017 for playing the Diablo demo. To be eligible to win, just post a top-level comment below with your favorite (or least favorite) change that has come to Diablo 3. If you need a refresher on all the changes, check out the condensed patch notes.
      Some additional rules:
You can only enter once. Your reddit account must be at least one month old by the time of this posting (i.e. created before February 25, 2018). All countries are eligible, although I’ll be shipping from the US, so it may take some to get to some parts of the world. Winners will be chosen randomly. Contest ends on April 1st, 11:59 PM PDT.
