They were the first hero class and for quite awhile in WotLK they were super powerful. The goal with hero classes was to make them OP one xpac and kinda poop tacos the rest. So in beta demon hunters were insane dps wise and there original tier set was rediculous. However, blizzard sort of reigned that in and killed their old mentality. There is however, a sort of general consensus that the devs buffs the classes and specs they play, hence why mage is always in the top of the dps meters and that, mage is the most played dev class and DKs are very unrepresented. Two theorycrafters for DKs did get hired by blizz but they were kind of shoved in the closet and the door padlocked. The poor summary of it all though is here, on mmo, on gamefaqs, on wowhead, on various other forums, there are hundreds of easy fixes recommended by players, there are soooooo many ways to fix dks that would take moments to do.
