ToS Mythic Progress Race Day 1: US Day

Day one of the Tomb of Sargeras Mythic progress race didn't exactly go as expected, as only four bosses died while the US and OC guilds had the run of the place. And even so, only two guilds managed to end the day on 4/9, but let's start at the beginning, shall we.

Only two guilds went into the Tomb early, almost as soon as it opened up this week, and for the majority of the day it was a race between Easy and Big Dumb Guild. The first kill of the day came around 2 hours after maintenance concluded and it was Easy that broke into the Tomb first, with BDG only 5 minutes behind. After Goroth they parted ways, as they both went on to down different bosses, again within only 10 minutes of each other, with Easy going for the Demonic Inquisition and BDG for Harjatan.

That's where the lead started to form for Big Dumb Guild, as they downed Demonic Inquisition a good half hour before Easy ended Harjatan for that 3/9. From there BDG had it pretty much in hand with a solid lead, but what we didn't expect was that it would take so long until the next kill. It was only two guilds downing stuff in Mythic ToS for a long time, but we got a third an hour after Easy got to 3/9, with Benched joining the Goroth killing club and moving on to 2/9 before anyone else downed the first boss.

It ended up taking Big Dumb Guild 4 hours to down Sisters of the Moon and get that first 4/9 on the board, after which they rewarded themselves by going to do Heroic splits. The fourth guild to pop up on the scoreboard was Instant Dollars, closely followed by Limit, who were done with their splits and were about to steamroll through right to the top. Easy couldn't get Sisters down in time, at least not before Limit whizzed past everyone and got to 3/9 within 30 or so minutes of entering the raid, and becoming the only other guild to down Sisters of the Moon 3 hours after that.

A lot more guilds had entered the race at this point, as the evening raiding teams came in, and the ranks quickly started to fill up. At the moment only Big Dumb Guild and Limit have gotten past Sisters and to 4/9, so it seems Mistress Sassz'ine and/or the Desolate Host are the first really big roadblock of the raid, even though Sisters seemed quite a big step up from the first three bosses. In the end it is a little surprising to see only four bosses go down on US day, as many people were expecting even a 7 boss clear. To compare, on the first day of Nighthold we saw 6 bosses die, and even with the 1 boss deficit ToS has, it seems significantly harder - at least for the US/OC guilds so far. Currently there are 19 guilds on 3/9, 8 on 2/9 and 26 with only Goroth down.

The EU maintenance has ended already, but the top guilds will be running Heroic splits before heading into Mythic, however we can still expect quite a lot of kills today from the EU side. Let's see if Sassz'ine/Host is really as tough as she appears to be!

Ain't that the truth!

The thing is, with Legion having changed loot a lot (As in even heroic (even normal?)) dungeons can drop ilvl 940 loot. While the odds are of course extremely low, Being able to roll very often (As opposed to say 3-4 times a week pre-legion), eventually you'll manage to get those high level items.

 

This makes it so it's (relatively to pre-legion) easy to squeeze out that extra 2-3% dps or hps to beat an encounter. It used to always be "We'll try again next week as we'll have better gear by then" and while weekly resets are of course still very important for trinkets and sets, the fact that the previous tier can still be relevant if it rolled titanforged, definitely is a great boon.

 

Of course, numbers aren't everything - thankfully - and that's why we still see "only" 5/9 for the first day of US. Legion has turned it upside down to make it less of a numbers game, making it so there's more emphasis on mechanics. And it's always fun and challenging to come up with new ways to beat those mechanics. On the other end, it can also be frustrating if you suddenly get a revelation "Oh if we had 3 of class X this would be easy...", so let us hope that it's not too dependent on specific things like needing at least 5 classes with immunities or much less melee classes etc.

Well that was when it was 4/9 :D But plenty of people were thinking 7 or even 8/9, including some top guilds.

      Here come more hotfixes, today focused on the Brawler's Guild issues, Wintergrasp Honor gains have been buffed, Paladins get a reduction in haste gains for Light of the protector and there's more quest and achievement fixes as well.

      The Dinner Impossible is now again possible to achieve in Arathi Basin. Allied Races
      Brawler’s Guild
      · Players who purchase a Rumble Card should now be automatically added to the queue for the upcoming rumble.
      · Fixed an issue that prevented players from receiving credit for "Solving the Mystery " after killing a mystery boss.
      · Fixed an issue that prevented Mindbreaker Gzzaj from dealing damage to Alliance players when casting Mind Break.
      · Fixed a bug that prevented players from being awarded victory if a player defeated Ro-Shambo playing the Rock, Paper, Scissors game.
      Classes
      · Paladin
      Fixed an issue that allowed Light of the Protector ’s global cooldown to be reduced more than intended by haste.  
      Player versus Player
      · Honor gained within Battle for Wintergrasp has been increased, putting it in line with other Epic Battlegrounds.
      · The Ivory Feather can be used once again in battlegrounds to gain Mark of Prey .
       
      Quests
      · Players will no longer be trapped in the combat phase for "The Darnassus Mission ".
      · Fixed a bug that caused spider NPCs to evade and prevent players from completing "The Council Has Spoken ".

      Game Director Ion Hazzikostas today answered your Battle for Azeroth questions and here are the highlights! The WoW dev team is internally discussing a level squish and no Allied Races are planned for Patch 8.2.
      Q&A Highlights
      They're not ready to talk about Rise of Azshara just yet, but the big info dump is coming very soon. They are working on ways to lessen the RNG of the Weekly Mythic Cache. In the past, they've experimented with different ilvl gaps and found that 15 item level gaps between difficulties work best for rewards to feal meaningful. The WoW development team has no incentive to make something that makes people spend more time in the short term, but isn't fun and it's burning them out, that's a terrible design. All they want to do is to make a game that is as engaging and fun as possible. Secondary stats are more important than primary stats in some instances and that's a problem they're trying to address. They're going to add a Caverns of Time portal in the next content update to Portal Rooms. There's a UI improvement in the works that will help players with path finding when the quest takes place on a different continent. The "Hide Chest" function is coming in the next content update. The team is also working to loosen transmog restrictions and make them more consistent across the board. They want to increase character customization, but not at the level of sliders. Adding eye color options is a possibility, but the way how the engine derives data from the game and how characters are built does not allow for simple height adjustments. Allied Races serve as a tool of deepening their storytelling and they're excited to add new ones where it make sense. Rise of Azshara is not going to have a new set of Allied Races. Repeatable Allied Race unlock questlines are a cool suggestion, they're going to discuss it with the dev team. 120 is a very large number when it comes to levels. It would be too overwhelming and not fun to reward players for each earned level. They're internally discussing a level squish, to make levels feel meaningful again. WoW Classic will have a dedicated RP realm. RPPVP is not planned right now. From a technical perspective, they shifted the infrastructure for how groups are built from Guilds to Communities (something that is consistent and tied in to the Battle.net platform more broadly). They've lost some things in the transition. They've readded the ability to have guild ranks that couldn't speak in chat. Two Sides to Every Tale was added to recognize two very distinct narratives in Battle for Azeroth, it's not a beginning trend of playing both factions. It's very similar to Double Agent. Legion was an awkward place for the game's economy. After BfA launched, they increased Gold gain from various sources to help players support repairs. Guilds can earn Gold by selling BoE items and they also want motivate Gold collectors by adding sinks. There are no plans to remove the Demon Hunter realm restriction in Battle for Azeroth. Reputations are tied to outdoor content. They don't plan to make dungeons award reputation. Hati was a beloved companion specific to Hunters so they brought him back. Thal'kiel may also return in the future, but they have nothing specific to announce at this time. Click here to watch the VOD.

      Tiger's Peak, introduced back in Mists of Pandaria, will be removed from the pool of Arena maps with next week's maintenance. 
      In order to fix some bugs with Tiger's Peak, Blizzard today announced they're disabling the Arena until further notice. They expect it to re-open in a future game update, so it's likely going to be added back to the pools of Arena maps in Patch 8.2.

      In order to fix some issues with Tiger’s Peak, we’re removing it from the pool of Arena maps. This should take place during our next scheduled maintenance.

      Following the raid on the Zandalari capital of Dazar'alor, both the Alliance and the Horde are reeling and licking their wounds, as they set sail for the Great Blue Beyond and what they is a crack in the ocean, a chasm surrounded by waterfalls.
      Nazjatar [Return to Top]
      The 8.2 zone is the capital city of the naga race. We'll face Queen Azshara and her forces in combat here and below is a map of the new zone.

      The Horde will make friends with former Naga slaves, sea giants, crabs, and some sort of goblin creatures. The Alliance will befriend a deep sea tribe (depicted on the right).

      Nazjatar focuses on replayable content. They have a whole team working on sandbox systems and updated world quests across Nazjatar to help the world feel more alive. A whole new set of world quests awaits in the new zone, unlike anything we've ever seen. Public events will periodically pop up similar to Legion assaults. We should be seeing new stuff even after months of playing in Nazjatar. Timeless Isle shrines that spawned mini-events should also make a comeback here.

      Azshara's Eternal Palace Raid [Return to Top]
      The headlining raid of Patch 8.2 will include 8 bosses. We will be investigating a Naga Hatchery and there may even be an underwater boss. The picture below shows off the bioluminescent Naga architecture of the raid entrance.

      Mechagon & Mechagon Megadungeon [Return to Top]
      Mechagon is an ancient gnome city, and a secondary smaller zone coming in 8.2. Both factions are going to make friends with junker gnomes. We're going to learn a lot about their culture. We will find out that here is a gorgeous society inside yet another vault that we'll have to break our way into.
      Inside there, the higher caste gnomes live. Those, that have given themselves over to King Mechagon and his vision to turn everybody into robotic components. In this society, the more robot parts you have, the higher up you go in society. Our junker gnome friends have decided that just wasn't for them, so we're going to help them break back into the city. The entrance to Mechagon is located in Boralus.

      We're going to meet a lot of new robot enemies that are on the side of King Mechagon and taking the fight to King Mechagon himself, in a new dungeon.

      The Megadungeon will feature 8 bosses and it will be Mythic only for a while. It will have two wings later on, similar to how Karazhan was handled back in Legion.

      For all those who like PvP, Blizzard's adding a new arena in this area.

      Battle for Azeroth Season 3 [Return to Top]
      We're going to see a Nazjatar-themed Affix similar to Infested & Reaping, an item level increase, and a new PvP Season. New mounts for Season 3 are Vicious Basilisks, and a new Gladiator proto-drake.

      Flying [Return to Top]
      Flying will be added to the game along with new cool mounts that include bees and mechanical parrots.

      Heritage Armor [Return to Top]
      The Tauren and the Gnomes are going to receive Heritage Armor in Rise of Azshara. Tauren will go on a spiritual journey with the spiritwalkers to find out why things are restless in Thunder Bluff. 

      If you're a gnomish engineer, you will receive goggles that you can put on your forehead.

      Heroic Warfronts [Return to Top]
      According to the Vanion Interview, the goal of Heroic Warfronts is to bring the Normal raid experience that a group of friends can complete together. They're intended for 10+ players. They're not going to be challenging for Mythic raid groups, however. There are no plans to introduce new Warfronts in Patch 8.2.
      Island Expeditions 
      Two new Islands are planned, Crestfall and Snowblossom Village. Crestfall will be the first one to have some lore and will come wth elements of the Warcraft II map (dragon skeletons). Snowblossom Village is a small Pandaren town in the hills, where they've been fighting the vermin. 

      New Foes [Return to Top]
      New enemies include Old God themed jellyfish and various Naga warriors.

      New Rewards 
      We're going to see Naga themed armor sets in the Eternal Palace raid and various rewards, including a crab mount that walks sideways, and a Baby Naga pet wielding a tiny fork!

      The Story Continues... [Return to Top]
      In a Taliesin & Evitel interview with Jeremy Feasel, it was revealed that Blizzard's moving away from gating the story. On a shot from BlizzCon, we also see Sylvanas wielding Xal'atath, which is quite interesting, because the Priest Artifact is returning as part of the Crucible of Storms raid intro.

      We're going to continue helping Magni heal Azeroth. It's not great, but it's going to get better.

      System Updates [Return to Top]
      Azerite Armor & Heart of Azeroth Improvements 
      Game Director Ion Hazzikostas unveiled during the Live Q&A on December 14 that Azerite Armor will have all traits unlocked immediately in Rise of Azshara. They're shifting Artifact Power to Heart of Azeroth, allowing you to unlock permanent powers, similar to Legion Artifacts. The neckpiece will offer a new avenue of progression that complements Azerite Armor. Azerite pieces are still going to have five rings.
      Bodyguard System Returning 
      Legion's bodyguard system is returning in Rise of Azshara. The initial plan was to make it work with Advanced AI, currently used in Island Expeditions & the Comp Stomp PvP Brawl. We'll have to wait until Patch 8.2 is available on PTR to find out more.

      Trial of Style is back with Season 4 starting today and Blizzard added four new Ensembles in Patch 8.1.5 which can be purchased for 60 Trial of Style Tokens each. You can queue up for the event by talking to a transmogrifier through March 24.
