Russel Brower Leaves Blizzard

Recommended Posts

Senior Audio Director Russel Brower has left Blizzard Entertainment. He explained in a Facebook post that with the success of a "sound-decentralization" initiative, his position was no longer relevant.

Russel Brower was the Director of Audio and Lead Composer at Blizzard Entertainment. He produced music for Warcraft III, World of Warcraft and all its expansions, for example the Burning Crusade opening theme.

He also composed the legendary "Invincible"!

We wish him luck in his future endeavors! Here's the full announcement:

To anyone familiar with my work at #Blizzard,

It’s with a heavy heart that I post this status update, but as they say, “all good things…”

I’m extremely proud of the amazingly talented team I helped build and the creative output we’ve accomplished together over these past 12 years. As the company has grown, the topography of the Sound team has adjusted accordingly, and the last couple of years have been no exception. With the success of a “sound de-centralization” initiative, my current position of overall Sr. Audio Director/Composer is no longer relevant and is being eliminated.

Today is my last day, though there is an excellent chance I will continue to contribute to Blizzard’s projects as a freelance composer. Obviously, I have a lot to figure out, so I do not have any further information to share as to what I will be doing next….yet. (Except for my solo album— that is well under way; stay tuned!)

I would like to express my heartfelt thanks to EVERYONE reading this: all of our Players, Music Lovers, and the countless new friends I’ve made worldwide, for the incredible and indelible life experiences I have enjoyed while at Blizzard. Especially the Players— each of you have truly enriched our lives by playing our games, meeting us at #BlizzCon and #Nerdtacular, attending our music concerts the world over, enjoying our soundtrack albums and sheet music— the list goes on and on. We have so much to be proud of and I am truly grateful to each of you and to all my Blizzard colleagues for putting up with me over the last 12 years and teaching me so much.

I look forward to staying in touch with ALL of you, be it here on FaceBook, Twitter (handle-change coming up), and at future concerts (actually I have several #VGL shows still to come this year in Europe, China and Brazil.)

WATCH THIS SPACE for news of my solo album, the first track of which I just recorded in June with 51 of the FINEST studio musicians in Los Angeles!!! #AFM #Local47 FTW!

Wishing each of you all my best, with tons of gratitude,

Russell Brower

I think it means they want to hire freelancers (external artists and composers) to do music for them or have different music for every region.

If you carefully watch blizzard news you will that more and more of the old employes are leaving.Despite the polite tweets for appearances ( dont forget icy veins works for blizzard) it doesnt take a genious to see that they either get replaced or they see what blizzard has become and abandon ship

While I am sad to see someone as accomplished as Brower leave, this part here should be more than enough to alleviate most people's concerns. I look forward to hearing more of his work, and, of course, the work from other artists and freelance composers in the future. A lot of his work will remain in the game as it is, and I expect that other pieces will be worked with or adapted, such as what happened with Azuna, remixing a Burning Crusade elf theme.

To me, I think the technology has jumped up with people being able to compose at home, and Blizzard has so many games and franchises, that they probably have people working on various projects cross game universe at the same time.

Surely sad to hear, his work has been solid but I wouldn't be worried about him, having worked for Blizzard is the best 'recommendation letter' you can get.

This is my feelings here. If there was bad blood between him and Blizzard he wouldn't be saying that there's an excellent chance he does freelance work for them and with 12 years a Blizzard this is a man who is going to be landing on his feet.

My guess is they are moving to a central team to cover day to day sound needs across multiple games and instead freelancing the big picture once an expansion type stuff. Thing is, if they consolidated teams they may not have had a position available for him and his options were to leave or take a demotion, there is no harm in that it happens sometimes.

Pretty much my view on this, too. With how things are being represented, it doesn't seem like simple niceness. They seem to be genuinely leaving each other on good terms and, hopefully, they'll maintain those and work together again.

You mean like how we cover Starcraft? Except that we don't, since we cover the games that our team here actively play in our free time and only a small portion of us play SC ranked.

Anyway, as Sawz has said, tin foil hats ahoy!

Why exactly should this board belong to Blizzard? Is every board that hosts car-enthusiasts related to Daimler or General Motors?

I have written quite a lot of postings concerning Blizzard, how I see the development of Blizzard games in general and what my opinion is on several of them. And these comments were not in favor of Blizzard, on the contrary. In short I find the decay in Blizzard games (especially story-telling, dialogue, atmosphere) horrible.

You will realize that my opinion has never been edited, deleted or something like that.

And I have never seen this page actually promoting sales or something like that. Sure, if there is a sale, new product, whatever it is posted as a news. And that's it. Has KingMe, Blainie or another Mod ever tried to sell you something? I see absolutly no reaseon that leads me to believe that Blizzard secretly owns this page. Why should Blizzard, where would be the benefit for them? Where is the marketing?

Not sure this is goodbye.  RB will have more control as a sub-contractor.  A legend for sure.  My favorite composition is "Siege of Worlds" as well as Sylvanas etude, "Lament of the Highborne".  All expansion soundtracks seared to the cloud and my hard drives for eternity.  Thank you sir.  Mrrgllrgl!!!

@KurosuI can see where the confusion comes from. I want to assure you that we do not work for Blizzard.

Covering Blizzard games is a solid business thanks to the connection between games, mainly through cross-game promotions (most notable in Heroes of the Storm). Covering all games with somewhat significant cross-promotions provides us with increased user retention.

So, why do we not cover more games, alongside Blizzard games? Honestly - it's too much work if we want to keep our quality standard. Should a good opportunity arise, we will cover a non-Blizzard game, even a game that fights against Blizzard games for playerbase, such as DotA or LoL.

As WedgeAntilles noted, you can complain about Blizzard, its games, employees or whatever you want, as long as it is within the bounds of our rules. Even moderators (myself included) and guide authors complain about decisions made by Blizzard.

If you have any questions, I will gladly answer them!

@BlainieHow does Reputation Farmer sound on a CV?

For Destiny 2, as it will be the first game ever to be published on Battle.Net that is not a Blizzard game?

The answer to the former question is because it ran on Windows Vista.

As for the latter, it is still being considered, but the answer for now is "probably not" because of lack of successful guide sites for the original Destiny. Should the game generate enough interest in guides, it will be most likely covered.

I'm one of the two owners of the site. We're completely independent and are not related to Blizzard entertainment in any way. It's like saying that a Pokémon fan site works for Nintendo.

The crazy kids who think there's some giant Blizzard imperialist conspiracy to ruin the video game industry won't listen to reason. Don't waste too much time on them.

Some great news for Chinese players, as Blizzard have signed a new agreement with NetEase, and players will be returning to their games as early as summer 2024!
Most Blizzard games were suspended in January of 2023, with players losing access to their characters and being unable to play World of Warcraft, Hearthstone, Warcraft III: Reforged, Overwatch, the StarCraft series, Diablo III, and Heroes of the Storm, due to an expired licensing agreement. Luckily, a new deal has now been made!
A lot of WoW players decided to re-roll brand new characters on Taiwanese and Korean servers after the old deal stopped. Their old character data is saved, however, but it will be from back before patch 10.1, so it's going to be a tough decision on how to proceed for them. Perhaps Blizzard can come up with a solution to merge the accounts?
      Here's the full press release:

Blizzard games like World of Warcraft, Hearthstone, and Overwatch 2 might soon make a comeback in China, thanks to Blizzard reportedly teaming up again with NetEase.
The news comes from Core Esports, which suggests Blizzard's game services could be back by the end of March or the beginning of April.
After 14 years of partnership, Blizzard and NetEase hit a rough patch in 2022, leading to failed negotiations. Consequently, when the licensing agreement concluded on January 23, 2023, Blizzard's game services were suspended across mainland China.
For more details, you can check out the article in Chinese or find an English translation by Amy Chen on esports.gg.

With Johanna Faires recently taking on the role of the new President at Blizzard, let's delve into the history of Blizzard Presidents from 1991 up to the present.
Allen Adham served as President from 1991 to 1998. Mike Morhaime held the position of President and CEO from 1998 to 2018. J. Allen Brack assumed the role of President between 2018 and 2021. In 2021, Jen O'neal was named Co-Leader of Blizzard alongside Mike Ybarra. However, she chose to leave the company after just three months. Following her departure, Mike Ybarra took over as President until a few weeks ago when he also announced his departure from the company on January 25, 2024. Johanna Faires was appointed as Blizzard's President on January 29, 2024.
We've come across a Reddit post where someone alleges to have worked at Blizzard during Mike Morhaime's tenure as President, continuing through Ybarra's leadership. We can't vouch for the accuracy of their statement, but here's what they had to share with the community.
